GC SUNS pair extend contracts

Gold Coast SUNS youngsters Dion Prestia and Daniel Gorringe have signaled their commitment to the Club, signing contracts extensions that will see the duo remain with the Club for the next two seasons.

General Manager – Football Operations, Marcus Ashcroft said the duo have committed to the club until the end of the 2013 season.

“We’re thrilled to have extended Dan and Dion’s contracts for the next two years, both are extremely talented players who we believe will play an integral part in the future of our club.”


The contract extensions were announced on the SUNS Game Day TV, prior to the match against Collingwood at Metricon Stadium.


Hailing from Melbourne’s inner northern suburbs, Dion Prestia was taken by the GC SUNS with selection nine in the 2010 National Draft. He made his AFL debut in the GC SUNS inaugural match against Carlton in Round 2 and this evening’s game against Collingwood will be his 12th senior game.


“I’m rapt to have extended my contract with the SUNS,” Prestia said.
“Being part of the team from the beginning is something that I will never forget. I’m really enjoying the challenge here on the Gold Coast,” he added.


Taken with the GC SUNS 10th selection in the 2010 AFL Draft, Daniel Gorringe has played seven senior games in his first season of AFL football. After making his debut against the Western Bulldogs in Round 3, Gorringe has had an injury interrupted season, with his latest setback, an ankle injury, sidelining him for the next six to eight weeks.


“I have really enjoyed my move to the SUNS, it’s a really exciting place to be around and I’m looking forward to continuing my career here,” Gorringe said.


“Although I’m disappointed to be on the sidelines for the next month or so, it’s great to be able to re-sign with the Club, I think it will be a pretty special place to be over the next few years,” he added.

I was told through some people that Gorringe was in the process of signing a new deal a few weeks back, great news that it has finally come through.

Really want to find out Trent McKenzie's contract status. Can't remember seeing any articles over the past 6 or so months about him re-signing.

Good signs, going to be incredibly hard to keep this young group together.

May have to go after a couple more 22-23 year olds at seasons end.

Dave Swallow & Zac Smith are through to 2013. Those are the only other two I know.

I was under the impression that most others, like McKenzie, etc, were up at the end of next year.

Great idea Thermo. I would expect both SUNS and not SUNS fans will be very interested in the contract status of a lot of the boys.

Good news for you guys regarding Prestia especially IMO.

He reminds me of a Leigh Montanga, both in playing style and looks. If he can turn ot near as good as him you guys will have to be very happy.

Also good to see him stay up here. I had heard early on that his family were keen for him to have not left Victoria initally, so this is a really good result.

Cheers for the list Thermo - good work. I think Lewis Moss is contracted until the end of 2012 (see link). Also I think Harris is 2011 and Fraser 2011 (not 100% sure).

Going by this list (and not including possible trades) the 8 or so players most likely to be de-listed at the end of the year will come from Lock, Stanlake, Daye, N. Ablett, Crawford, Patrick, Liddy, Harris?, Fraser?, Coad, Jack Stanley, Tippett, Ah Chee and Magin.

We'd be mad to let go of Bull and Iles. I'd like at the least to see Patrick, Liddy, Crawford and Daye get another year. We'll most likely give Fraser another year as our young talls will be slower to mature. There's going to be some hard decisions made at the end of the season. Glad it's not me making them.

Be interesting if any clubs persue Lovett now he is back in business... Was a troubled soul, but amazingly skillful player, with at least 3 good years of AFL Footy in him... Very similar story to Andy Krakour, and he has certainly proved his critics wrong. Still wish we kept Andy on our list, he would have been very handy this season.

LITTLE might appear to be on the line for cellar dwellers the Gold Coast in the final fortnight of their AFL debut season.

But the Suns' 14 off-contract players will have everything to play for, Gold Coast coach Guy McKenna has warned.

The Suns can cut up to eight players ahead of next season - and McKenna said his 2012 list was far from decided.

"From a club point of view, there's nothing much to gain but, individually and collectively, there's a lot for some players," he said.

"If they choose to drop off, we'll soon understand that when things get tough, he's probably a player we don't need on our list and that's what we'll find out over the next two weeks.
