I have a similar opinion to you although I do believe that it was for the greater good to get rid of players like Shaw, Thomas, Wellingham, Jolly, Didak etc when we did.

That's the one part I DIDN'T disagree with at the time.

But those weren't the cold hard facts were they? because under the surface the culture had rotted to the point of jounos starting to talk about our off field culture and Pert having to warn about volcanic off season behaviour, which was everyone's code for illicit substance abuse

We were the drug story of the year one day before the Essendon supplements saga broke, and the evidence is everywhere to see

Players cooked before 30 years old due to injury and 'conditioning' problems, players in their prime ruined by partying and unable to get back to form or fitness such as Daisy and Wellers, bizarre behaviour, Harry walking around the oval muttering to himself while reporters followed him, Shaw's lack of discipline and on and on

It was endemic and Buckley was placed in the ludicrous position of cleaning it all up and putting us back on track for a real shot at a premiership dynasty and the usual soft supporters lined up to say he had destroyed a young premiership list

It was young all right but it was also destroyed long before Bucks took over and he has done magnificently to clean out the rotten apples and avoid a Gold Coast scenario

I agree with you. I was saying the same things back then. I was all for getting rid of all those players. My issue was the way we were playing even when those guys were gone. But I guess I was just being impatient expecting more in too short a space of time.

The thing our club has always done well is never have the pressure and focus of the coaching position going into any season. We have never had a coach coming out of contract in his final year which has burdened everyone.

It's fair to say, we are on the right track and a contract extension before the start of next season would be a good thing for all involved.

Great time to re-sign Bucks. The club is on the up and the players are behind him, this would show faith in the game plan and may also encourage some players to committ.

Absolutely, can you imagine Mick standing by all those players and paying them a fortune and we never get to recruit Grundy Broomy Adams Scharenberg Varcoe etc

Nightmare scenario :fire:

These "issues" are retrospectively overblown. But for a funeral we could very well have won the 2012 GF and Buckley could have done what Chris Scott did. At least he could have coached his team to a GF. The side was very flat for the PF.

The result of the "corrective action" was a much bigger part of the subsequent decline than any actual issues.
When your own people are using the word volcanic to describe the off season I'm not sure you can hide behind overblown.. it wasn't even about form and fitness.. Pert and co were genuinely fearful for their safety and welfare

Unless it is in reference to a premiership squad which would otherwise seem impossible and it was in justification of said own peoples actions. IIRC that comment was actually about post season activities and not limited to Collingwood. Same bloke said we'd be flag contenders. It's all for media consumption and PR maintenance. To a large degree it was Caro (etc) pre-emptive.

I don't doubt there were some party drugs going around. I don't doubt there still are nor that there are at all clubs. Hell we know we still had players last year that the very least dabbled and we are happy to let Swan go to Vegas with Martin. I'm pretty sure they aren't into Frank Sinatra tributes.

Please, not limited to Collingwood goes without saying but that's really just to deflect all the questions that come if you admit you are talking from personal experience about the players in your charge

Like I said proof is in the pudding, players cooked before their time, unable to get conditioning back, bizarre and undisciplined behaviour, you can downplay it but it cost us a shot at multiple flags

One thing I don't like about bucks? He is winning supporters from outside the 'family'.

Proof? I could offer much more proof to the contrary. This toxic squad finished first and then second in a year where they were beaten by only 1 side, they then followed up worth a PF under Buckley. The bloke most claim is the ringleader is still there and still raking up 30+ disposals and has done it more than 100 times. I wish we cooked a few more like that. Who are the players that are supposedly cooked? Ex St Kilda clean skin Ball? Thomas with ankle and shoulder injuries? Wellingham is flying. Didak wasn't cooked he was still one of our best players but we focussed on his negatives rather than what he could do for the side. Terrible decisions to start him as sub in last game and left on the bench until the game was lost. Davis was offered a contract just not what he thought he was worth and you could hardly fault his last season. Johnson was a hard nut and like many of his ilk suffered injuries which cut him short bit I still think he could have gone on as well but that wasn't in the plans.

What cost us a shot at multiple flags is ego. Eddies refusal to back track on MM/Buckley and MM's petulance and frankly unprofessional behaviour in the main but no doubt Buckley and some players can be included in that as well.

Keep kidding yourself, the list was destroyed by the previous coach and his habit of turning an eye as long as you gave him wins

Ask West Coke how that worked out for them, ask Ben, ask Chris

Yet we wanted to keep him? He'll win their B&F.
Negotiating 101 -"I want him, you can't have him"
Negotiating 102 - "Crisp, you've gotta be kidding"
Negotiating 103 - "Beams for 5, 25 AND Crisp, oh alright then":D

Edit: He can have their B&F

So you honestly think we wanted to trade beams out?
I don't.

Not saying we actively sought it, but when it came along I reckon there smiles all round.
Outwardly we were shattered of course

...... the legend that is Nathan Buckley.
Word I have is fairly strong so we'll see how soon this is done.
Should ruffle the feathers of a few around here..... ;)
They should announce it tomorrow, would fall in line with everything we've done in recent years.
