Stopped reading at Faulkner: Classic bits 'n' pieces cricketer

I disagree he's 22, he bats, he bowls and he's got a cricket brain - a deserved selection IMO. He is the newer version of Andrew McDonald who should have played much more Test Cricket than he did.

You disagree with me? I was highlighting that Faulkner is NOT under any circumstances a "bits and pieces" cricketer

The list of players has just been announced.

George Bailey TAS 30
Based on short form cricket I guess. Couldn't be for his Shield average!

Michael Clarke NSW 32
No brainer there.

Ed Cowan TAS 30
An age that matches his average. Predicting this will be his last contract.

Patrick Cummins NSW 19
Who??? Oh him, right. Is he at least jogging yet?

Xavier Doherty TAS 30
Keeping the seat warm for Agar.

James Faulkner TAS 22
Classic bits'n'pieces cricketer. O.K for limited overs but nowhere near test quality.

Brad Haddin NSW 35
CA must be getting seriously concerned with Wade's form to have this man on the list.

Ryan Harris QLD 33
Finally a smart choice. Every 2nd test match and no ODI/T20 crap please.

Ben Hilfenhaus TAS 30
Geez Bird picked a bad time to get injured. Like Doherty, just keeping the seat warm for someone better.

Phillip Hughes SA 24
Pretender. But I suppose we have to have at least *some* batsmen on the list.

Mitchell Johnson WA 31
Age 31 and he still sprays it like an alley cat in rutting season. Should not be ahead of Bird.

Nathan Lyon SA 25
Done enough. Just.

Glenn Maxwell VIC 24
Oh come on CA you're just trolling us now.

Clint McKay VIC 30
As long as he's just in for short form stuff and nowhere near our test squad.

James Pattinson VIC 22
Yep. Gun. Currently our best quick.

Peter Siddle VIC 28
Definitely earned it. In the fantasyland where everyone of our quicks are fit he's a borderline choice, but that's just a dream so his durability is valuable.

Mitchell Starc NSW 23
Breakout season. Moved ahead of Johnson as the l/h quick, handy no.8.

Matthew Wade VIC 25
Jury is out. Verdict to be returned in 12 months.

David Warner NSW 26
See Wade.

Shane Watson NSW 31
Must be on the list for his captaincy skills.
20 is far too many. Too many getting big coin that they don't deserve. Its like the Melbourne AFL club paying 100% of their salary cap for continued dud performances.

The cricket thread was going brilliantly over the last couple of days.

Couldn't last forever I guess.

I was going to trash it - but then got to Watson at the end and realised it was a troll.

Sorry for the stupid question but i've never really payed attention to cricket contracts, so what does this mean? Bird and Smith can't play for Australia? Or they just aren't getting paid as much or what.

Contracts don't restrict people from being picked by Australia. By playing a certain amount of games, you can get upgraded to a contract - happened with Cowan and Finch this season, for example.

Yeah, Bird probably deserves a contract. If he's good enough though, he'll earn one anyway. People bitching about so and so player not getting a gig shouldn't matter, because there's a clear path to gaining a contract.

It is a guide to likelihood of selection, but its also based across all three formats (supposedly weighted toward Test cricket, but not solely for Tests) so somebody close to selection in all three might not actually get selected in any. It does not limit selection to only contracted players, a national side is not like a footy club, and uncontracted players may earn a contract if they have enough appearances (for example, in the current contract period Ed Cowan did not begin with one but gained one after reaching a certain amount of Tests).
In essence, it is who the selectors feel are most likely to play in some format or other, but does not limit their future choices.

I'm not sure, but for a NOC (No Objection Certificate) to be required for a player to be released to the IPL and other T20 tournaments it may be that a national or state contract is required. A national board could hardly deny an uncontracted player the right to earn big dollars. I would not be surprised if Cummins contract is partially with this in mind.

How in the world doesnt Bird get a gig. He was our best bowler in his 2 tests. He is super important for an Ashes series with his seam and swing. He gets top order wickets

He only played 2 tests, so he didn't get that upgrade status mainly. He is still a chance, just that he isn't on the list. I can't believe Craddock said Bailey would have been the last to be picked on that list. Ridiculous given his ODI form and really he should be in the Test team ahead of someone like Khawaja, the most overrated cricketer of a generation.

What did Bailey average in the Shield this season? Shouldn't be anywhere near the Test side.

Lucky

Doherty - Done as a test cricketer and could conceivably lose his 1 day spot if a young spinner pushes through next summer and is fast tracked.

Johnson - No longer leader of the attack and fringe test player at best.

Cummins - No guarantee he will even play this year. Would take him to the ashes if fit but he is not in the starting 11 in any form at present.

Unlucky

Smith - Seemed to look the goods in India and is surely going to the ashes.

Henriques - Promising start and i believe worth persisting with. Obviously not in the immediate plans thou.

Bird - Performed very well and would've got a run in India if not for injury. Surely will go to the ashes.

Anything able to be read into the Ashes tour? For mine it looks like Faulkner gets a tour at Henriques' expense. Cummins will probably go with bird no certainty. Hilf will tour.

Maxwell's interesting. Clearly in for both 1 day and 20/20 yet who knows what they are thinking with regards to the ashes.

Based on career and leadership he should be. We all know he has the talent for it. The year before he averaged 55 in shield. You could say it about Clarkes average in Shield this season, was just 34 ;)

My favourite quote from todays announcement is this

Glenn Maxwell is a talented young player who has had opportunity invested in him. He is very aware that he needs to tighten his game and perform with greater impact and consistency.

In basic terms: We stupidly invested money in Maxwell and gave him an automatic upgrade, but we've come to realise that he's actually shit.

Faulkner? Really?

Makes the laughable Maxwell selection seem justified.

In what way? Looked good in his t20 and ODI appearances, was just MOM in a Shield Final with bowling figures to rival anyone over the last few seasons in the long form. What's he doing wrong in your opinion to not get a contract? Or is it just the BigFooty classic 'I don't like the bloke so **** facts' approach?

However, Maxwell is massive LOL's, the funny thing is Steve Smith who was basically a previous version of Maxwell as a CA's lovechild who doesn't actually warrant it, did actually warrant it this time and misses out.

Doherty and Johnson are straight forward picks whether you like it or not, they might be replaced soon but as of the moment they are basically first XI ODI players, so no point not giving them contracts when they're basically going to be upgraded from the CT if you didn't. Cummins yes, the only reason I think he's there is so CA get full control over him, personally I would prefer states manage player injuries over CA who as we know do such a wonderful job....

On your unlucky's, as above agree on Smith and I was a bit of a Smith hater but has improved his batting and given there is **** all else about the place, at least he or Khawaja should of had one. Bird not getting one worries me, makes me think his injury is likely to at least make him no chance for the Ashes where they obviously see Hilfy with experience and the conditions a better backup option. Hilf I thought was very lucky, didn't even consider him getting a contract.

One positive at least I thought was at least we got a few more contracts. Sure we end up with some guys earning more $$$ than they should be but it opens up a few more state spots and probably a bit selfish in this department as we will get an extra 3(I think). Along with my opinions above, I think Haddin is a wasted spot, if we assume Wade is still the preferred keeper for all 3 formats I don't see the need to contract another keeper, if he ends up replacing Wade then he gets the upgrade anyway.

Not proud of saying this but ...

C'mon England 10-0 whitewash might get the change thats needed for our future in the whiites...

Every year the list demonstrates CA's failure to stand up to the ACA.

There should a 17-man squad on a base wage with incentives for everthing else - avaliability across all three formats, consistent performance, individual good performances in any format etc. Plus they need to get rid of the stupidity of the "ranking" system in its current form.

The idea of the ACA calling a strike in an Ashes year would be the height of silliness.

I effing hate this attitude. Surely you prefer to eat some humble pie and have a series win or two than to have your personal opinions vindicated?

Well maybe its about completely stinking it up now to progress forward and have an overhaul, unless of course you reckon we are flourishing and on the verge you doing this country proud

Obviously Australian cricket is going through a rough patch, but you hoping we lose 10-0 so we can get that overhaul we desperately need is ridiculous and I would go as far to say that you either don't really want that to happen or aren't a passionate Australian cricket fan. Surely you would prefer to win, even if the cattle on the park might not be your favourite players/ones that you think aren't up to it? Were you actively rooting against Doherty in the recent India series? He is not up to test standard but I was sure as heck hoping, as an Australian and Tasmanian, that he took a bag of wickets for us.

Maxwell is classic example for me personally. Not a huge fan of him really but I would sure as heck hope he scores a ton rather than getting out once he is in the team.

Whether we are on the verge of flourishing or failing is basically irrelevant, I will never be hoping we lose a series, especially not 10-0 to the Poms.

Take a breath champ

I would prefer we win or at least show some resolve...but a whitewash is what is needed for long term change, so for the better of Australian Cricket, yes I hope we get pansed in the next 10 tests.

Its going to be painful but I feel its needed for real change

We just had a whitewash, and now you want two more. What exactly would get so much better after losing 14 straight tests? New selectors? New state setup or acadamies? or a complete overhaul of everything cricket related?

With the players we have now, we might have to suffer for a little bit but I don't think losing 14 tests on the trot is any sort of solution, or a jumping off point for any solution. We obviously have differing opinions but come ball one in England I hope we embarrass them, not ourselves.

Based on our contracts?

I agree

I can't believe they picked these hacks rather than the 20 players in shield who would all average over 50 with the bat and under 20 with the ball.
