Opening post has been updated. With no mention of Henderson, this presumably means he is contracted for 2018. Impey yet to be added.

Expiry by year:

2017: Surman+, Hartung, Gibson^, Stewart, Fitzpatrick^
2018: Henderson*, Willsmore, O'Rourke, Heatherley, Roughead, Frawley, Howe, Miles, Pittonet, Puopolo, Vickery, Nash, Lewis, Brand, Hanrahan, Morrison, Whitecross, Schoenmakers, Burgoyne, Lovell, Duryea
2019: Clarkson, Gunston, Stratton, Shiels, Will Langford, O'Meara, Birchall, Glass, Hardwick, McEvoy, Cousins, O'Brien, Ceglar
2020: Rioli, Smith, Burton, Sicily, Impey$
2021: Breust, Mitchell#

* Actual contract expiry unknown
$ The club has not confirmed the length of Impey's contract. It is speculated that Impey signed a three year contract with Hawthorn (his contract with Port Adelaide expired in 2018).
^ Players have announced their retirement at the end of the 2017 season.
+ Has already returned to South Australia and will be delisted during list lodgment.
(r) rookie-listed player - generally on a 1-year contract
# In July 2017, the Herald-Sun reported that Hawthorn signed Tom Mitchell to a five year contract. The Hawks have not confirmed the length of Mitchell's contract.

Less salary counted towards the salary cap
Thanks for the reply but surely not after the increase in the salary cap and the recent retirements/trades... though I am yet to come up with a better reason.

EDIT: I think I found the reason..."Up to three rookies can be retained, with the player's permission for a second or third season, with the others having to be either delisted or elevated to the primary list at the time of the National Draft".

With Surman and Fitzy retiring the Hawks only had 2 cat A rookies left: Cousins and Hanrahan (Nash being cat B). This allowed the Hawks to retain Glass as the 3rd rookie. Next year the Hawks can swap Glass with someone on the Senior list who is underperforming but still valued. Sound plausible?

It’s not necessarily the case that we can’t afford to pay him within the cap. It’s possible - if not likely - that the club is front ending as many other players contracts as they can while also only paying the bare minimum of the cap.

There was also that rule the AFL brought in a few years back where if you paid under the cap by like 95% one year you were then able to pay over it by like 105% the next year.

That in conjunction with further retirements/delistings next year means we could have the most cap space available of all clubs going into next seasons free agency and trade periods.

2018: Henderson*, Willsmore, O'Rourke, Heatherley, Roughead, Frawley, Howe, Miles, Pittonet, Puopolo, Vickery, Nash, Lewis, Brand, Hanrahan, Morrison, Whitecross, Schoenmakers, Burgoyne, Lovell, Duryea
Wow that will be a really hard decision for our list managers on who to keep. Burgers will probably retire and I feel like Vickey will get dropped but I have no clue about anyone else.

Surely every club would have around about that many players coming out of contract every year. Most of them will be re-signed by start of the year, a few during the start of the year and the balance delisted/traded.

If you have 44 players on a list and hand out maximum 3-4 year deals, then 15 or so players would always be out of contract and on your re-sign list

I guess you're right. Still being all those names makes me wonder what is going to happen to players like Puopolo and Roughead.

This season surely the 4 players that would get a new contract if they'r keen on playing next year are Roughy, Chip, Poppy & Silk?

Howe most like closest to getting a new contract & then the rest have to prove that they'r good enough for a new contract.

Frawley apparently has played enough games for the fifth year option on his contract to be triggered. His contract now extends to the end of the 2019 season.

Apparently we gave Roughead a contract extension back in 2016. According to the Herald-Sun, his contract expires at the end of the 2019 season.

Taken the above list (removing Morrison and Lewis) and either Hawthorn are doing their thing behind the scenes or we have a bucketload of players about to come out of contract.

You'd think Howe, Schoenmakers, Nash, Miles and Pittonet would all be currently in negotiation or signed up already in the background. All of the younger rookies - Hanrahan, Jones and Jiath all seem lively enough that they'd get another year.

Strange no announcements this season (even the Roughy/Frawley extensions were only in the Herald Sun and never confirmed by the club) besides Morrison or Lewis. Playing smoke and mirrors?

EDIT: Dixie Flatline Need to add Duryea to the 2018 expiry list above and remove Morrison/Lewis who in your original list above are in both 2018 and 2020 expiry.

Yep, unusual for us to have that many players out of contract by Round 20.

Did Ratten not get a contract for 2019?
