People saying Dev is like West or Xon or SPS or whoever aren't saying they play the same role, but that they play to a similar quality.

These guys are spuds. Add Collica, Taylor, Merenda, Prior......

Lots of them. But these guys average players at other clubs, and all had played plenty of footy.

Dev is 21. He's speculative. It's why he's a 3rd rounder. It's like a draft pick with 3 years in the system built it.

I have no idea if he will be a gun or not, but you guys seem to be convinced you already know. You're not saying, "pass, don't think he'll cut it", you're saying, "I can't see results now, therefore I know he's no good".

You know what would worry me about Dev? If he was getting 30 a game. That's a spud with his skillset.
Collica was pretty much our best player one year.

With Ashcroft x2 incoming for positions in the midfield Dev will be playing HFF for the rest of his career if he stays at Brisbane. Will be a solid contributor with a defined role at the Eagles and by all accounts is a fantastic clubman. Very happy to pay a F3 and back him in to show the qualities he showed in his draft year playing the role suited to him whilst future stars Reid, Hewett, Ginbey and O’Sullivan/Smith get bigger. We have zero mids in the 22-27 year old bracket bar Petch (at a stretch), so Dev and Paddy Dow types would be a good get for a 3R pick IMO.

Is a bloke your trading in for a 3rd rounder worth a 4 year deal tho?, if we got him for a nothing pick and signed him to a 2 year deal I wouldn’t be bothered yeah no worries go for it nothing too lose, but a 4 year deal and trading a 2nd round draft pick for him ? Really?
I think it's a 3 year deal. But would I give 4 years? Generally I don't like giving any player 4 years, and it depends on how much cash. I assume, since he's not supes keen on leaving, we've offered decent coin. But we have cap space atm.

He's a speculative pick. He may not work - this why we probably give up a late 30s pick at most. If he doesn't work out, it's not a huge deal. At the moment we're still getting smashed in contested ball. We need to make inroads into fixing this to give Hewy, Ginbey, Reid etc, a better chance of developing. The alternate route is finding an experienced fringe player to be stop gap for a couple of seasons.

Another option that may come up is a 3 way trade with Liam Ryan.

I still can't believe the draft is 51 days away...can't wait to read all the EAGLES MUST TRADE PICK 1 from the VFL media for the next two months.

You keep saying it’s speculative pick , a speculative pick isn’t worth a 4 year deal, SPS, Langdon were speculative picks they weren’t given 4 year deals

Can give you 100% mail (few weeks old) that Ryan was keen to be traded to the Hawks, don’t know if that’s still the case. I’d ask for Hawks F2 assuming it’s going to land in the mid/late 20s which would be overs for Dev but I like where your head’s at.

Jesus couldn’t have said it better myself, crazy to think we’ve offered him a 4 year deal, he’s pretty average in a good team imagine him in the team we dished up from time to time this year.😂
I doubt we have offered him a four year deal TBH.

I hope not anyway.

They're different roles, you can't really compare.

Naish - gets a ton of ball, but doesn't use it properly
XON - should get a ton of ball but can't get his hands on it
Dev - is not meant to get a ton of ball, doesn't get a ton of ball, is meant to put body on line, puts body on line, meant to win some hard ball, does win some hard ball. Has potential to be a role playing mid. None of those other guys, or SPS, or whoever you want to throw up, are meant to be playing as a defensive mid.

These guys are different players that you want different things out of. I think the issue is, you guys all think midfielders pretty much do the same thing, and can be compared to each other like for like. Not so.

If I want a guy getting 25-30 each week, breaking some lines, hitting some targets, being that main midfielder? It's Hewett and Ginbey and other players we draft. No one ever asked Rowan Jones to get 25 and win games off his own boot. He played a role. But we'll be asking and expecting Hewett and Ginbey to do it.
