Might be dependent on how the Draft/Trade period goes and what spots are available after

Maybe he’s reconsidering suiting up for another year knowing wins are still going to be hard to come by and there’s a possibility he might finish the year playing WAFL

He’s also running out of premiership mates with only Duggan, Cole and Yeo still there with him.

Waterman, Williams, Edwards and Kelly are the only other players who’ve been there more than 4 years

A quiet life back home on the Midwest coast might be looking pretty attractive in comparison

New CBA coming up too in the next couple of years isn't it? So 900K in a few years will not be the same percentage as it is now.

Probably part of the reason that Harley didn't want to go for that Hawthorn offer of $1.7m for 11 years. Sounds like huge money now but if he does become one of the better players in the comp he'd be getting screwed in the last several years of that deal. Think back 11 years ago, only 3-4 players were earning more than $1 million, now the top salary is $2 million and 25 players earned more than $1 million. The average salary has also increased from about $280,000 to $460,000 in the last 11 years.

I guess it boils down to security versus maximising your value but guys taking 8+ year offers should really be thinking about how much salaries can grow over time.

Well said mate, to many on here are thinking just about the player in isolation. He helps the team greatly. He won't make the same amount of mistakes our current backs do. He will bring strong leadership and work ethic to the group. He provides the experience our young players need to grow next to them. 6 years at 900k is no big deal. I would not be against grabbing May either if we can get him cheap to help the kids.

Christ, I would be taking on Petraca's contract and or offering Steele an offer he cannot refuse.

We must realise that just having 23 kids in the team will make us worse. We need a dozen very senior strong performers out there to teach the kids, protect the kids, win some games and start to build a team together with the kids.

Always a much bigger picture than just recruiting a player in isolation.
Petracca is an interesting one. Outside of the stuff around his personal brand, he is a perfect candidate to come across - premiership player, twilight of his career, plays a position of need, would be a good mentor for Reid and Hewett, worked with Mini, and we can swallow his contract.

Hough is a much better player then Starcevich.

I think Starcevich is our TDK here.

Let’s get a player we need . If Steele didn’t accept 3/3 then take Starcevich wage bucket and go 3/4

It’s a little ironic that your solution for everything is “the club should just throw a huge pile of money at it”, now here they are throwing a huge pile of money at someone and you’re against it 😂

He can't be earning that much. The ads during the footy keep showing him going to Cash Converters.

I never said I’d be happy with anyone…. I said I’d target a big bodied midfielder and a ruck.

Spending money without reason isn’t something I support

You said we shouldn’t throw stupid money at players who don’t deserve it up yet here we are

I’m certain Ned Moyle on 900k a year for 6 years is the better get then Starcevich but you seek to think one is dumb and one isn’t for some reason despite the fact we need a ruck and not a poor man’s Brady Hough

The difference there is one of those two players is willing to head west and the other isn't.

Does Starcevich bring anything to the club that's worthwhile? He always seemed to me as Brisbane's version of Tom Cole.

Same size, same games played, same position, both are "senior players with flag experience", statistically almost identical players.

We already have Tom Cole, do we want another Tom Cole?
There is a huge difference between the two, Starcevich doesn't turn over the ball as often as Tom Cole does. .

Collingwood are a funny one here - they may look to shed Hill but I doubt they fire-sale him yet. With that in mind they would likely make it mildly painful for all involved.

I would also have questions over his long term viability - both physically and mentally - flashes of brilliance for sure but he's also not overly consistent and has already bailed on GWS (twice, if you count that he tried to get to Essendon too).
Is Bobby Hill playing AFL footy into his 30s?...I have my doubts.

Still, he would be a replacement for Liam Ryan - both on and off the field really....

If WA is his only option then I think Freo will come for him too - their small forward brigade are at a bit of a tipping point -

Switkowkski (Free Agent next year I believe?)
Freddie (just re-signed but will be more focused on the downhill skiing at Milan 2026.)
Bolton (most effective up the ground)
Reid (surely midfield bound)
Dudley (tiny and soft)
Strange post
Freo have got plenty of small forwards, the worst of them probably comparable to our best. Also lots of money tied up there. Can see no reason they'd chase hill

...because he's a quality player that may want to return to WA?

Why do you think they were chasing Kosi Pickett? Or Chad Warner or whoever.

They would have a dip if he was looking to come back to Perth, of course they would.

You agree Starcevich is dumb ?

I’ll wait and see what we trade for him. I’m not too fussed about the salary tbh, it’s not like we’ve got a bunch of other players demanding it.

May want to return to W.A is a problem. WA draftees have been shithouse for a while now.

We need to grow up and target non WA players and actually be successful in doing so

We brought in Hunt, Flynn, Witherden and Graham in recent years.

Not exactly stars obviously, but they're interstate players who we targeted and made the move to Perth.

This is the narrative I don't understand. I've heard Cal say it a couple of times. How does not diluting our free agency compo affect Brisbane matching the offer? I must be missing something because I don't get it. They could still match if they want to keep him, couldn't they?

If he was an unrestriced free agent Brisbane would not have the right to match. He could just walk and they have to accept whatever the compo would be.

The fact that he is restricted means Brisbane can match any offer that comes in and force a team to trade for the player.

GWS did this with Jeremy Cameron when he defected to the Cats.

I don't watch many Brisbane games and when I do I can't say I ever paid attention to him. But statistically, Cole is better than Starcevich in just about every area, including disposal efficiency & effective disposals. Clangers are identical.

So apart from Goroyals22 explaining that Starcevich is a better footballer purely on the grounds that I don't watch enough football, I would like to know how he's an upgrade on Cole?
