We were a poor ground ball team throughout the Simpson era, particularly post clearance.

What we saw in 2017 and 2022 without Nic was our ground balls went from pretty bad to dead last with a massive gap to second last.

In 2022 they had a graphic of average ground balls with Nic in the team and without and the difference was stark.
Nic Nat made our midfield look way better than they really were. People want a similar ruckman, but a better solution is to have a better midfield, and if you can get a ruckman as good as NN, it's a bonus.

This makes sense until you consider the four weeks in September 2018 when they took apart supposedly better midfields in Melbourne and Collingwoodx2 without him.

With Draper all of a sudden becoming an UFA and it being a Suprise to anyone, how does that work? How did they assume it was a RFA?
Top 25% at each club are restricted, which works out to be the top 10-11 players at each club.

People trying ty figure out who the 11 guys are who get paid more than Draper and can’t name more than about 5.

Presume he isn’t getting the salary people thought he was, and therefore isn’t in their top 25% of earners?

He’s crap, but also so is Essendon’s veteran list, so it’s an odd one.

Where on earth have you pulled that from? I’ve never made that post you’ve literally made that post up.

Simmo was a good tactician, got the best out of our elite intercept defenders and ridiculously efficient forward line to paper over our arse of a midfield. Even with prime Nic Nat, Shuey, Yeo, Gaff etc. 4 weeks of dominance in 2018 was timed to perfection.

Lose the midfield battle, corral to force the shitty kick forward to be marked by Gov/Barrass/Shep/Hurn, then some elite disposal from the likes of Jetta and Hurn to get the ball to JK/Darling/LeCras/Ryan/Willie etc to finish it off.

Unfortunately for whatever reason the club thought that'll do and never drafted a midfield. Then 666 and stand rule came in and we were ****ed.

Even now the club is obsessed with HBF with midfield potential like Bo Allan. ****ing bizarre.

I'm sure it's only temporary, but we've even turned Harley Reid onto a HBF. ****.

We were on auto pilot. Our system was hard to beat when we were nailing it. No NN, Gaff, Sheppard, and we were still winning.

Pal go and watch the Beagles and tell us what you think.

He is the furthest thing from ok. If the Beagles could drop a handful of their worst players, they'd probably include Barnett. He is very very very bad.

Reports of him looking fit and a solid Backman during pre season were optimistic at best.
Barnett has been told he will be delisted if he doesn't show more heart . I heard this from his own billeted parent at a preseason game . He hasn't shown that he deserves a list spot .
I'm starting to think a mature age wafl /vfl/sanfl ruck is better way to go than wasting list spots developing.

Defender with midfielder potential?

Yeah that's what concerns me. Although there was this on an article on him

But he idolises modern day midfielders like Will Day, Finn Callaghan, and Bontempelli. It's reflected in Duursma's opening games of 2025; he's been clean in the contest and quick to get to the outside of stoppages. His size is at times overpowering with explosive speed and sharp agility through congestion. It's juxtaposed with wonderful balance and composure -- Duursma possesses strength belying his thin frame, and he surveys options while driving his legs through contact. It's in those moments that Duursma best mirrors Will Day's electrifying game.

Will that translate to the next level?

Based on profile Dyson Sharp's contest game is what we need right now IMO, but he's had a poor start to the year

The season's barely started, and they always rate non-vic kids worse than Vic kids. A long way to go.

From memory he's got another whole year to run on his contract after this one. Gross.

Delisting him this year would be quite bold from the club. He definitely needs something though, some kind of wake up call. I'd take literally anything from the SA clubs for him at this point. Pack of twisties.

He really is just wasting a list spot going backwards at the moment, along with Jamieson on the outer oval.

My worry is with Sharp, has he hit his plateau and will have an average year. He might really sink in the rankings this year.

Happens quite a bit in the draft year, dominant juniors come into the year in the pick 1 frame but others growth and development surpass them and they slip in the draft.

Tyler Sonsie is a good example of this, few years back he was red hot pick 1 coming into the year but literally didn't develop at all in his draft year and others did. Sonsie ended up in the 20s and was probably lucky to go there.

Good to see Sharp playing seniors this year, but was better last year in the seniors than he has this year. Time will tell.

If he doesn't improve, lock him in as a classic West Coast pick "he'll totally rediscover his U16 form, it's the other clubs that are dumb!"

Didn't we suddenly turn into a contested side in the 2018 finals?

Remember seeing a stat showing our H&A contest numbers compared to a shift upwards in September.
Redden went nuclear and everyone else lifted a gear for ground ball gets, either luck or a flick of the switch.

This sounds right, but I find it hard to believe we were so upfront.

For those saying that rucks take time to develop clearly haven’t seen him play back.

It’s not the case that he is just playing a position that takes longer to develop in. He just lacks physicality.

He gets pushed under then ball so incredibly easily, no matter where he plays.

He has 30 games to put together a trend line that shows improvement and make a case why he deserves an exentsion.

Boy oh boy the 2022 draft is looking shaky.
