Provisional 2025 Draft order

Port still had a top 10 pick when they went after JHF. North got the 2 players they rated at 1 & 2 in the draft. the Eagles weren't going to select Wardlaw and got a guy they had in the top 5 and an extra pick they used on Hewitt.

Geelongs first pick this year is likely 12-18. With the NGA & Father sons that pick is likely high 20's, possibly 30+. Next years one will be better but i still think this Future first is likely around pick 15-25 depending on the usual. Its actually up to the manager to guide the player to a club that can get the trade done.

In saying this, I expect Harley to stay for 1 more contract.

Would we at all be interested in Clayton Oliver. He clearly needs a change & to get out of Melbourne ASAP. He’s on a big contract & it’s been said Melbourne would be happy to send him to another team for very little if they took on the contract. We have the cap space.

He’s the type of mid we need & maybe like Hogan a change in cities could work well for him. If he could find form again it would go along way to helping the midfield.
Absolutely not. F@#$ that. Don't go there. I can't be more emphatic. His problems are bigger than most realise.

It would be difficult to use the threat because I don't think the other teams would believe us. It would be a disaster if we had to draft him again. We would have used pick 1 on him, twice! Two pick 1s for one player who doesn't want to be there.

Also I believe he can nominate his contract terms if he reenters the draft.
Isn't it a different draft if he was to leave without being traded? Wouldn't it be the pre season draft?

Is the Harley low ball trade speculation gaining more hype because we have a very poor trade reputation.

After last year maybe Clarke, Pyke and the recruitment team should take notice of what's going on around them.
I think we do have the reputation of being like a wounded gazelle limping across the plains. Both with trading and with contracts. At least it seems like the new management is trying to be a bit more hardball, especially with contracts.

The cats (and every club) will make sure they get a deal done if he nominates them - Probably correct.

clubs will probably only get one swing at Harley. - This is a very Good Point.

We don't trade him for crap picks to Cats/Hawks no matter how much he cries.

We shouldn't get too bogged down and fixated with the picks certain Club/s currently are projecting to have, on their current ladder order that they hold, because in all likely hood it won't just be limited to picks, rather it will involve:
  • Picks
  • Players trades are a factor too, be they direct trades or second party trades.
  • Multiple Clubs getting involved.

As Dsp has pointed out, whilst it seemingly looked a very long shot for Port to get JH-F from North on their own, eventually a more complexed trade was crafted with West Coast, Port, North Melbourne and GWS getting involved in a mixture of picks and players.

To be honest, I am ok if we don't just get picks for trading Harley, I will throw up a couple of others scenarios.

Take Melbourne for instance there has been speculation that Kysaiah Pickett ( Age - 23 ) wants to return to WA, they also have WA players that I would think are of interest to us and would improve our list - Trent Rivers ( 23), Koltyn Tholstrup ( 19 ) and Judd McVee ( 21 ).
I am not suggesting we get all four BUT a combination of these players and or picks could work.

Likewise St Kilda - Lance Collard ( 20 ) and Hugh Boxshall (18).

Now I am by no means suggesting that we limit the players that we ask for as exclusively being Western Australians, but being able to return home MAY help.

Similarly take Hawthorn and Geelong - neither have the picks at the pointy end of the next few drafts, that would appeal to us, so throw the onus back on them ( IF they are the Club Harley wants to go to ), tell them to go do the trades with other Clubs to get the players OR picks that we want.

I would be staggered if West Coast ( although they won't be either admitting or advertising it ) don't have a couple of peeps already working on the what ifs and so forth's of a multitude of scenarios, with players of interest to us being worked on and strategised as a part of a theoretical Reid trade.

If we are not doing this - THEN - the Club has descended into an even bigger mess :poo: than I thought it had.

This is my point. Port started with pick 8 and a F1 and were able to get a deal done for JHF and still get Rioli and Ratogoulea.

Now we have future trading for two years in advance.

The cats (and every club) will make sure they get a deal done if he nominates them, because unlike most of the names you mentioned, clubs will probably only get one swing at Harley.
Sure Cats might get lucky with a club likely to split pick 2, pick 1 getting traded ect. All unlikely in a draft like this where the top 4 picks could be owned by two clubs and is being one of them.

Drafts are a lot more compromised the next years than ever before especially when the JHF trade went down.

This is why i mentioned his manager and the price. Cats imo are highly unlike and it’s happened before where stars didn’t get to do where they wanted

A lot of the better clubs appear to have an understanding between the club and the players where the playing group is willing to take less than market value to keep the squad together. We used to have that a long time ago and then after 2018 that group all started demanding top dollar.

But with HR, if he wants to go to one of those clubs he might have to accept considerably less than we are offering him. I mean the contracts he is being offered would make him the highest paid player in the league and all based on potential. He is nowhere near being one of the best players in the league at this stage. That might not sit well with guys who have taken unders at those top clubs.

He might have to make some difficult choices. Not sure what i would do if i was him. I would probably go for the money first and chase success in the second half of my career rather than chase success first and hope the same money is still there 5 - 7 years from now.

I am sure @eaglevision can come up with a trade with Ryan to Swans along with some or both our R2 picks and their picks. King is looking like a genuine R1 Academy prospect plus the 2 other academy boys who look more like late first to mid second rounders
A bid for King along with Sydney’s finishing position is the key here. If there is any chance King is bid on before their 1R then they would be keen to trade. If they can get a pick in before matching if I was them I’d take a player then go into points deficit next year. On current positions, I don’t think a bid comes on King before Sydney’s first pick (I rate King in the pick 10-20 range) but hypothetically speaking:

I’d ask for pick 5, Sheldrick and Ladhams for picks 16, 19, 34 and Ryan.

That would net Sydney +421 points for bids, give us a pick the at would likely get Josh Lindsay or Cody Curtin as well as a mature ruck and inside midfielder.

Posting this here as its relative to our future drafting

Fresh article from the ABC about the Tassie team, looking like it still has the potential to fall flat on its face.

I'm hoping that the Tasmanian side does fall flat. We don't need a 19th side. If it happens, hopefully it's one of the superfluous Vic sides that gets relocated.

We don't need 18 sides, the talent is spread thin enough. Going back to 16 would be the ideal for mine.

Agree, we should drop punt St Kilda and Norf off the face of the planet.

Also, give us Collard and Boxshall while you're at it too Saints, ya mangy dogs!

imo the AFL dont even want a 19th team, because it would force them to sort out a 20th team. 18 teams is the sweet spot.

The stadium demand was supposed to kill the idea but a stupid state government couldn't read between the lines.
Personally I think 18 teams is too many. The product suffers and so does the financial viability. Merge 2 Victorian teams into one and have that form the initial list for Tassie and merge another two into a Victorian based team and revert to a 16 team competition.

Woule be bloody embarrassing for the AFL tho for announcing a team and then having it fall through

Nah. They’ve said all along it’s conditional on the stadium.

If Tassie can’t build or won’t build the stadium, that’ll be on them.
