This board acting like Tim Kelly isn't one of the best 40 players on our list is pretty funny.

It's not Tim's fault we haven't moved past him yet, or Cripps' fault or Yeo's or Duggan's or Coles etc.

These are bitter cold days of a rebuild where your list if full of guys who need time develop and guys who are old/spuds.

It's not like we have a salary cap squeeze, in fact the opposite is true and we probably need to find guys to pay.
Really depends on the coin. But he's borderline best 22.

Rather have someone with passion for the game but thats another story.

We have no idea what the coin is, but it's not just about the 22. We aren't delisting every bloke who isn't in the 22, we have 42 list spots.

People want to pretend that we are beyond needing guys like Tim Kelly on our list, and unfortunately, we are not.

Personally, I would like to see the end of the Tim Kelly era at West Coast. Massive disappointment, would love to move on.

Could find another similar player as scraps from another team. Someone with a bit of grit and character.

Say would you want about Baker and Graham but at least they care and put in, Kelly doesn't and doesn't really deserve a contract.

In my opinion

And herein lies one of the ridiculous consequences of the AFL levelling up via salary cap system.
I accept that the AFL doesn't want an imbalance caused by beggar clubs only being able to afford half what rich clubs can, but the threshold spend requirement is far too high.

Making teams with crap lists pay 95% creates a number of problems.

1. The price of spuds goes up.

2. The amount left over isn't enough to chase more than one decent recruit. If we could spend 80% for a year or two (bank the excess, use within 3 years or lose it etc.) we would have the ability to meaningfully change our list profile.

We are stuck on this merry go round where we have to spend money on what we've got and can only get enough left over to chase high value recruits if someone on big coin retires or leaves.

I realise that all clubs except Geelong have this issue but the difficulty of getting players to move to Perth makes it that much harder for us.

I've thought about this the last couple of days and probably agree the cap floor is quite high, but 80% floor is too flexible.

We will have teams stacked with 120% salary cap playing teams with 80% salary cap.

You might be a really good team, but not have any previous salary cap stored away, and get blown off the park by a team at well over the salary cap just because they were shit 5 years ago and only paid 80% of their cap and banked the rest.

The crux of the issue is this - Don't let your list deteriorate to the point that ours has, and you won't have issues with the cap floor.

95% cap floor still lets you front load deals and stash a bit away when you're in a down period.

Drop a few cm's off that waits and you might be in for half a chance.

You'd fit willie's old jumper just perfectly.

What a joke giving him 2 years, guy doesn’t give shit about the team

1 year with triggers for a second would be ideal. Straight two years a bit of concern. I’m sure the salary would be reasonable. Got to spend the cap somehow. Seems like he is well regarded internally and if he can provide mentorship and hopefully split his time between the HFF and midfield, that would be good 👍

Raise the TPP, reduce the floor to 80% and Max of 100%. No banking salary, but when you’re shit you don’t have to overpay shit campaigners.

Mentorship?

You want Kelly teaching the young midfielders how to go about it?

Be like David Brent running a Corporate Leadership seminar.

Why not? An experienced AFL player - he can offer mentorship to the young mids and from what we have heard publicly, that is what he is doing.

This makes zero sense at all.

You're just taking money out of the game. Let's remember the salary cap is determined by the CBA. That's the players money that they have bargained for.

Clubs being allowed to pay 80% of the cap just means you're taking millions and millions of dollars off players that they have rightly earned and are entitled to.

I'd also add that AFL players are already paid quite low in terms of a percentage of revenue. For AFL its 28% for sports like NFL and NBA its 45-55%

sure, but allowing clubs to spend 80% and not pay it forward means you've removed the negative pressure. We'll see some clubs just pay 80% all the time, the players lose their hard earned, and we'll have a less balanced competition.

It's a dumb idea.

Just remove the list size restriction. Problem solved.
That would actually be perfect. If you have cap room cos you have a lot of kids, just add more rookies etc to the list, but keep the minimum list spots in place.

Each club would find the right balance for where their club is at.

Yep. I’ve posted about this before. Having a minimum salary cap spend AND a maximum list size is stupid

It’s a nonsense that a playing list like ours or Richmond or North’s should be earning almost the same collectively as a Brisbane/Collingwood/Geelong who are significantly older and more accomplished

Clubs in rebuild mode with young lists are forced to overpay their players which is counterproductive to establishing the right mindset to improve

I can understand why there needs to be a minimum salary cap, but I don't quite understand what a max list size is meant to protect.

Also don't understand why list sizes have remained at COVID levels.

A list of 37 players for a sport where 23 players are named in a line up is actually absurd.

Simmo's comments about drafting private school boys is relevant now more than ever
