I don't think there's much question that if we end up with 1, 2, and ~12, we want two gun mids, and a gun Key Defender (or trade for mature (but not old) ruck, but hard to see who is worth giving up pick ~12 for in terms or a ruck in the right age range)..

EDIT: What level pick would we consider giving up for Max Knobel if could convince him to come back to Perth? Been splitting time with Ned Moyle so hitouts fluctuate, but goal kicking is nice.

We can sign Knobel as a delisted freeagent

Sounds like it’s only the first batch of nominees so far

A surprising name on that list is Luke Strnadica especially given a recent article on him in The West detailing his struggles during his time at West Coast

Michael Selwood not on the list yet but Kane Bevan is. Hasn’t stipulated an 18 month contract either

Good pick up Keys, I noted that as well and was surprised that he has nominated.

Given to shortage of ready made plug in rucks he and Crossley may well get a contract offer in the MSD, simply due to the status of the short supply and demand for ruck backup stocks.

Only if Gold Coast delist him though

If we were able to convince him to return to Perth and Gold Coast pushed too hard in trade negotiations we could go the PSD path

Suns have just lost Himmelberg (ACL) on top of Ballard, so they might be on the lookout for some key position depth in the mid season draft.

Thats shit news when players go down with ACL injuries. :(

I reckon Oscar is staying, Jack Williams will ask for a trade and we'll be training A. Reid and Shanahan as key defenders next pre-season.

Crossed my mind this morning that if Allen did stay then Jack might consider his options - especially if Bailey continues to grow into the forward/ruck role he’s played with some success the last 2 weeks

Based on selection this year it would appear he isn’t a favourite of McQualter with Reid and Bailey both being picked ahead of him at different stages

I’m sure there’d be other clubs interested in him

I thought once a player was delisted from a list once, he was a delisted free agent for life as long as he is out of contract.

If Hough can grow more into the midfield role over the rest of the year, we may not need/want to recruit another young mid from another club this off-season.

Hough will be 23 next year, Graham 28, Hewett will be 22 next year, Reid 21, Brockman 23 etc. We wont be that young in the middle.
Add the likes of Hall and Gross who will be more ready next year, and whichever mids we draft to that too.

Yes we will still be young but we will be on the way up

I also think Flynn has shown enough that we wont have to rush and pay overs to bring in a ruckman. If one presents then great but I dont think too many of the ones likely up for grabs will be significant upgrades on Flynn for it to be worth chasing.

KPD is the hard one, dont know what the club wants to do with Allen, Shanahan and A.Reid so its hard to know if we need to rush and find a KPD immediately.
Outside Buss or Z.Reid there probably arent many who are big upgrades on what we have, id be ok drafting another KPP with one of our earlier picks and picking one of our KPFs to learn how to be a KPD.

If we take our 2 first rounders + our 2nd, then match the 3 bids and upgrade Dewar thats 7, I think we could get away with that tbh

delist/remove:
Jamo
Sheed
Petch
Chesser
Cripps
Barnett
Cole
Rawlinson(R) - covers our MSD pick

Livingstone can go if we need the extra rookie spot for one of our other NGA kids
No way in the world will Jamie Cripps be delisted, he deserves another year on top of his existing contract. 2027 would be his last year. We have to delist a minimum of 3 from our main list. Take your pick from Jamo, Sheed , Petch, Barnett and Chesser or maybe get rid of all 5.

He’s an unrestricted free agent for life which is not the same as a delisted free agent

Yeah agree, to be honest Bailey impressed me on the weekend (for the first time in a long time), if he keeps growing into the role and we have Waterman and Oscar in the forward line I just don't see a spot for Jack. He's too good to sit in the WAFL and he doesn't have the ceiling that Reid and Shanahan have.
He's too slow to play in the backline alongside Edwards, but could Williams be a better long term option there than him?
Could see a few teams being interested in him, maybe Sydney or the Bombers?

If JWilliams was to leave a straight swap for Sheldrick wouldn’t be out of the realms of possibility but I’d much rather keep him and let Bailey explore his options.

Note sure a 21y/o WAFL player dominating against 18y/o's is the basis upon which someone should be drafted into the AFL though.....

So are you ignoring his form in the league side for West Perth ????

Would be a bummer to lose JWill, particularly as Flynn has had durability issues which could see Baz back in the #1 ruck spot soon enough.

I like him as well, he does seem to be down the pecking order a bit though for Mini and there's a logjam in the forward line if Allen stays

Even if Allen does go JWill is still behind BWill, Reid and Shanahan. And god forbid we use one of our first round picks on Curtin. It's a no brainer for him career wise to seek a trade, would instantly improve a number of clubs. Maybe his old mate Jack Darling will get in his ear about coming to North so he doesn't have to play second ruck.

Reeves while isn’t a home run. No one likely is this year besides bring in Cameron.

He competed well against Witts in the ruck. A lot better than we have the last few years. Hopefully a state league ruck emerges from now until the rookie draft but either way we need to find another one to add how could be ready to play rd1 if needed in 2026.

Knobel could be that man and probably should’ve been.
I wouldnt be after any of the ruckman going around unless they are an actual upgrade on Flynn or a development option, like knobel or some younger state league ruckman.

If Cameron is available then sure, offer our 2nd rounder for him + some of our fringe players or something but I wouldnt offer more than that.

Knobel definitely shouldve been our target, unless theres more to the story like he didnt want to come idk

We’ve traded/retired/delisted around 8-10 players in each of the last 4 years stretching back to the end of 2021. Given the ongoing transitioning of our list and McQualter having had a full year to assess what he has to work with there’s every possibility that we’ll say goodbye to another 8+ players

As far as I know our list is 37 main, 5 rookie and 2 Cat B listed players although Miguel Sanchez has posted Maric may have already been promoted to the main list. In the absence of a formal announcement, I’m going to assume it hasn’t happened (no offence Fivey)

We’re about to add another rookie via the MSD although we won’t know until May 28 if that’s on a 6 or 18 month contract. Dewar also needs to be promoted to the main list as this is his 3rd year on our list

Maric, if he hasn’t been promoted, can be kept on the rookie list for 2026 which is why I’m sceptical that he has been - it would be unnecessary

So we finish the year with a 38/5/2 list make up and as it stands 16 players out of contract (17 if our MSD pick is on a 6 month contract rather than 18)

We have three picks inside the top 20 based on current ladder positions and before draft “complexities” - Picks 1,15,19 which we should be using on drafting new talent.

Our other usable picks are 33, 51 and 73 which will probably be needed for bid matching on NGAs Wes Walley and Koby Evans plus F/S Charlie Banfield

So that’s 6 new draftees plus the MSD pick which will require 7 players to be taken off the list

Our list also could do with one or all of the following via trade
• Ruck
• KPD
• Midfielder (22-26 age range)

That could get us to 10 players needing to be moved on which would likely involve a player(s) being traded out

I’ve broken the out of contract players into 3 categories plus two others who have their own unique situation

1) Probably get a new contract
• Hutchinson (R)
• Dewar
• Kelly
• Champion (Cat B)

2) Probably get delisted
• Sheed
• Jamieson
• Rawlinson (R)
• Petruccelle

3) Borderline
• Chesser
• Cripps
• Bazzo
• Brock (R)
• Hunt
• Cole

* Allen either stays or we use the draft pick we get for him so his decision has no bearing on how many we delist
** Livingstone is on the Cat B list so delisting him doesn’t create a usable list spot - unless one of our other NGAs (Tylah Williams, Jake Caton or Darcy Montgomery) shows draftable quantities which would then put Livingstone’s spot in jeopardy

In summary, there’s four players most wouldn’t argue with being delisted one of who is a rookie so that gets us to a 35/4/2 list split and needing to cut at least 3 more players

I’m inclined to payout Barnett’s contract as he’s shown little, if any, indication that he’s capable of becoming an AFL footballer

That would leave us needing to delist at least 2 of the 6 players I’ve listed as borderline - 3 start next year aged 28+, whilst the other 3 are 23 and under

It’s going to be a difficult decision and will be based on how those players see out the year. IMO, the two in most danger are Chesser and Hunt

In his current form, Cripps arguably deserves a new contract but needs to maintain that. Even then it’s a question of one more year of Cripps compared to retaining a younger player than Bazzo or Chesser. It’s not cut and dried so jokes about sharps24 obsession with Cripps aside his view that Cripps should be retired has validity

We really do need to push the AFL to allow us at least two, and preferably four, additional rookie list spots
We should be given extra rookie list spots because we have to travel and take emergencies leaving our 2nds undermanned

Agree on the ruck.
We either go after D Cameron next year for 3 years as a decent ruck while we develop A Reid or we go after Moyle from GC next year as a long term option.
If we grab Sellwood in the MSD I agree with your comments around another young mid.

If we lose Gov that creates its own problems which are massive and there are only 2 options imo.
Dont have to trade in someone necessarily, but we will probably have to either draft a KPD or move one of Archer/Shanahan to the backline more permanently if we dont bring in someone like those two you mentioned.
Blight is an option but he doesnt solve our KPD issues, we would still have to draft another KPD in the meantime.
Z Reid from ESS 23, having an outstanding year after many years of injury, high price, high risk, immediate reward and OOC.

Busslinger from WB 21, for whatever reason the coach didn't prefer him over their strong KPD stocks recently when he played against GWS and performed admirably.
Not high cost, low risk, lots of upside, almost ready to play, compete for a spot with Edwards/Brock/Bazzo. OOC 2026 but entice him home with a bigger offer with no Gov in 2025(believe we chased him last year before he signed for 2 years).

If we land either of Z Reid or Busslinger we don't need to draft another KPD in the near term, we also have D Shanahan coming through in 2026 who is an NGA prospect who looks decent.
