James Hird preaching that the Eagles don't desserve any draft help is amusing because they bought it on themselves.

Essendon got a number one draft pick, under his watch, due to one of the worst doping scandals in sporting history and i'm sure he gladly accepted that.

Fitting in the end they wasted it on McGrath when there were better players available
Every club brings it on themselves in at least part. Things don't just happen in a vacuum.

Our part, that we didn't bring on ourselves was.

1. Shep being a concussion retirement
2. Venables being a concussion retirement
3. McGovern being a concussion retirement
4. Sheed being an injury retirement
5. Yeo being made of glass since 2019 (minus 2024)
6. Allen being made of glass since 2021 (minus 2023)

Jarrod Cameron just flat out quitting football when he looked like having a Bobby Hill breakout season 😤

I don’t really see how getting more kids in Harley’s age bracket helps anyway. Just use the draft and high picks we have to add top end talent.

Clearly the lack of senior leadership on the park is a killer. The problem is the senior players available are mediocre in terms of footy. Getting Yeo to play majority of next two seasons would be a big help but we prob need another seasoned body.. personally I don’t see dev as that guy, see mediocre above. We need to do something but it’s a hard sell for the club atm.

I'd want to see him return to preseason training in ripping nick for a few seasons, and not lead the comp in frees against, before I'd even consider it.
Harley doesn't need the additional responsibility of formal leadership. He just needs to focus on carrying the midfield
These two posts, although I would hope that we could find someone that could take some pressure off Harley as he shouldn't have to carry the midfield but rather just be an important cog within it.

I'd go as far as saying that Harley shouldn't even be considered for the leadership group until he can demonstrate the points in Ambrose Burnside's post.

Baker can handle the captaincy for the next 3-4 years as Harley grows as a person and player.

We get a full/18 game season out of Yeo next two years we'll be ok, can then add Chad for free.

Trouble is you wouldn't bank on Yeo hitting those marks. Finding someone that is cheap enough, but still able to help is the challenge.

Yeo is cooked, the sooner we all accept that the better.

Best we can expect is that he starts next season, breaks down again in week four and then does the honourable thing and retired on medical grounds, this then open up a spot in the mid season draft for us.

...and a Captain kept off the park with candy floss ham strings

We’d be interested in him definitely and I hope it’s heavy. Freo look to have their backline sorted would be surprised if they went after him. Massive McVee fan, he has been one I’ve been waiting to be OOC since late 2023 and this is the year.

With hough playing more midfield lately McVee would slot into his lockdown role who can also push up to half back. Allows Hough to be flexible with his position in defence then into the middle.

The issue is though what would Melbourne be asking for. Let’s just say we eventually ask the question for a priority package, and receive the end of first round priority pick (same thing as north couple years ago) we use that for McVee and go from there. Happy to hear thoughts and what not but definitely one we’d benefit from heavily.
McVee is on a rookie contract from what I can see, which doesn't make sense.
I would be offering the Hawks 2nd round pick.

I also think Hough will get a full preseason in the middle , he has shown enough to earn that and we really need as many reliable guys in there as possible.

Another preseason to the youth brigade and healthy seniors would be huge.

Can we get the healthy seniors though? The ones that are, which ones can turn there form scoring? Kelly?

On the topic of rucks, is there any reason Archer Reid can't become a full time ruck?

203cm so has the height. Athletic, great skills, good footy IQ.
Can't be that hard to teach him ruck craft?
A Reid already possess great ruck craft for a 19yo, he just needs to be eased into it as its brutal on the body.
When he has an AFL body in 3 years I think he has enormous upside as our ruck.
That's why I see the D Cameron chase as the ideal scenario for the club with our ruck problems.

Yeah can see this unfortunately

I am probably a little more upbeat on our mid field than most, we could definitely use a mature body to help.
The young guys need a really good preseason and more time to gel.
Assuming Harley stays he should be top tier.
Hewett has shown some elite signs, needs to be fitter and stay in games longer.
Hough has shown some dash and accountability.
Hall has shown enough he may develop and worked well with Harley at times on the weekend.
Gross, Allan?
Add a couple more high picks to the mix.

My issue is we have got little from most of our more senior guys, they have been inconsistent and poor defensively, I would pretty much let any out of contract go, bring in some mature guys we think can have a positive impact.

The Vic media seem to have switched enmasse on the reason for no WCE Priority Pick from "they won a Premiership in 2018" to "they are the richest club and swimming in money".

Surely the sslary cap snd soft cap makes that irrelevant.

And is it true anyway... with the WAFC taking their cut every year?

He was promoted at the end of last year.

Projecting to have won 11 games from 91 games since 2022.

Priority picks for WCE should be less controversial than the academy picks for the Northern clubs or F/s for the Vics.
Yep, like I said last yeah hardly a peep from the Vic media when the AFL changed the NGA rules back this late to allow Essendon to get the first round talent they wanted anyway and generate another top 10 pick for nothing but also kept the 20% discount.

We are one of a select few clubs who haven’t been lucky to get a first round talent as FS, NGA or academies which pretty much allowed teams to get another first round pick or established talent for free.

They will if he wants to leave, it’s never fair when a good player wants to go home. They took him knowing he had strong ties in the west so was always a risk for them. It’s not like Freo are going to be able to offer anything better either.
He literally just signed on for 3 more years a few weeks ago
