Think BWill at a new club playing mostly as KPF could surprise. He’s been recruited as a KPF but been dropped into the ruck, then ruck#2, then forward then WAFL then …

He is an athlete and he has a dip. Might be one we trade and regret.
Certainly regret him on our list

This is very odd.

Out of all the players recently without a contract, he'd be at the top of my list to keep. Plays a very handy game for the Beagles, was one of our best players vs Melbourne and generally speaking plays his role at AFL level.

Wonder if the bloke has told the club he's keen to get back to vic or something.
I could see a few club wanting cole as an UFA .

A team like Carlton who are losing dochety maybe silvani saad is 32 and Newman almost 33 . They will be desperate for a small/mid defender like cole .

Carlton could probably add cole as a FA and still get a band 1 compo after the scales are balanced with the 1.7mill a year de koning FA move .

Richmond with all their salary cap could easily add cole onto their list to support their kids too .

Collingwood could be very interested in BW as part of the potential Cameron trade.

It would be very Collingwood to lose Cameron and gain marshall and someone like bailey with him flourishing with a competent midfield

Our list stands at 44 after the retirements of McGovern and Sheed

36 - main list
6 - rookie list
2 - Cat B

Dewar had to be shifted off the rookie list to the main list since he’s been at the club for 3 years now making it a 37/5/2 split

Most obvious delistings from the uncontracted players seem to be Jamieson, Hunt, Petruccelle and Rawlinson (R). That only opens up 4 list spots with Allen opening up a 5th if does leave as a FA

Barnett is contracted but has had a poor year and could be delisted and paid out

Cripps and Bazzo appear to be receiving new contracts. Champion will follow soon enough you’d expect

Leaves the following in limbo

• Chesser
• Cole
• Newton (R)
• Livingstone (Cat B)

Based on Allen and TDK getting Band 1 compo and Hawthorn finishing 7th we have picks 1,2,14,20 and 32 at least to use (draft or trade) plus the possibility of adding 2-3 NGA players and a F/S using late picks or adding as Cat B rookies if there’s no bid we need 8-9 spots opened up

From the above we only have 5, maybe 6 if Barnett is cut, meaning we need to we need to create at least 2-3 additional spots through a combination of other delistings, trades out and additional list spots as part of an assistance package

Shows why getting granted some extra list spots is so important and why retaining Cripps could be considered a mistake

Which is the fifth guy off the main list if we keep Barnett?

Jamo, Hunt, Petch, Allen.

Is McCarthy on the rookie list for another year freeing up Sheed’s spot?

I prefer to look at it differently, no GF wins at all and in comparison a competing team now.
Give me the GF please, sometimes we want it all but that's not how AFL works .

Yes I get that, I generally think that it is what it is I just don’t understand why people get upset or worried about the obvious being stated.
There is reasons why we are crap, he is one of those. No big deal for it to be stated.

Where's Longy contract wise? is he contracted?
Not saying he should go but a pretty quiet return year from his injury and hurting for spots.
Could he be in risk?

Pick 2 for Walters, Davies & pick 8 would be where I would start.
Gees GCS would only let Walter go if they got Curnow which would require 2 1st rd picks and a three way trade involving WCE ..
So a scenario of
WCE lose Pick 2 gain Walters
GCS lose Picks 2 & 8 gain Curnow lose Walters
Blues gain Picks 2 & 8 lose Curnow

Everyone wins Blues get a TDK replacement in CDT at Pick 2

WCE lose Pick 2 gain Walters
GCS lose Picks 2 & 8 gain Curnow lose Walters
Blues gain Picks 2 & 8 lose Curnow

Everyone wins Blues get a TDK replacement in CDT at Pick 2

Everybody certainly does NOT win.

Fold Coast lose that deal hands down. It's not even a question.

Curnow is not worth picks 2 and 8, good lord.

I can see the current regime giving up Pick 2 for Michael Walters, though.

GCS will pay what they think would help them to win a premiership , they gave up Pick 6 & 23 for 27 yr old Dan Rioli last year ..Hardwick doesn’t care about the costs he wants a Flag at GCS by adding whatever he thinks he needs that much is obvious ..

I'm torn on BBW. And JWill.

I think both Williams are good enough to be third tall forwards/second rucks. But I'm not convinced either can be more than that. BBW has battled manfully as a first ruck the last couple of years and as a first/second/first ruck this year but his ceiling appears to be what it is. He was 6th in the comp for hitouts in 2023 but it's hard to make a case he was better than any of the top 20. Maybe 35 year old Goldy, last season Lycett or somehow played 20 games in his last season Andrew Phillips. Maybe the game moving back towards ruckmen running and jumping at the ball will help his game, but there are star rucks that change their teams (Gawn, Xerri etc) and good rucks that do their job (Meek, Witts etc) and then BBW is in the next rung. To the eye he does some really good things. And some not so much. With Flynn in the side it feels like we are are trying to do a NN/Cox or even Darcy/Jackson combo but it's rotating out of the ruck who is least worst in a given game.

JWill takes marks and kicks goals. But he does look like a slightly pudgy and slow Cam Green. He's second for marks inside 50 and fourth for goals and has only played 13 out of 20 games. He's about on par with Shanahan for relevant stats but Shanahan just looks like he has a much higher ceiling. JWill is miles ahead of Archer Reid right now. Reid has 17 marks inside 50 and has kicked 5 goals. He's raw but the coach loves him. An equivalent established player for JWill would be Hayden McLean. He's played just shy of 100 games and the last 3 seasons he's kicked 20+ goals and been second ruck. Sydney's problem isn't McLean, it's McDonald not being available and Amartey not being reliable. They will be top 4 again next year if they have McDonald and McKay/Curnow forward.

We need to settle on Waterman/Allen or if Allen goes Waterman/Shanahan or whatever the preferred FF/CHF combo is then work around that. The issue is we can't reliably pick BBW or Flynn to ruck 80% of game time and break even.
My opinion only but think Jack was given a bit of a raw deal by the coach earlier in the season when Archer kept getting picked ahead of him for no real reason as Archer couldnt find the goals and things have just gone south from there - and for whatever reason Jack seems to be carrying more condition than he did last year. I can remember Mark Stone raving about Jack’s potential last year and more or less said “watch this space” - so it’s a bit weird how much Jack has fallen off the perch.

I know he's turning 30 but I'd still take 5 years of Petracca to help us short term. I know that won't be liked on here, but we're so far off it we do need some quick fixes to get competitive.

See if Walsh is looking to jump ship from Carlton.

Try Bailey Humphrey from GC, he's maybe not the quick fix like Petracca, but the dude will be an absolute jet and with all their academy and star players we could offer more coin.

It likely won't cost pick 2 (maybe swap that with GC for 2 picks) and use one on Steele, Cripps, Wines, Atkins (Geel) etc

I think we need to turn that pick 2 into established players in some way.
I think that is rushing it a little too fast. We need top end talent from the draft. Were better off using later picks for established talent , players at the end of their careers but still effective on the field and offer some leadership. What we did bringing in Sam Mitchell and what Brisbane did bringing in Hodge. Make a play for Paddy Cripps or a Lachie Neal

I think it's just pick 2, or pick 2 and steak knives. And that's what makes the trade fun - it seems reasonable for all parties.

Gold Coast gets a gun but he's aging/injuries/form. Carlton sees 2 as fair market value because he's aging/injured/out of form. West Coast gets a GC gun that GC can spare. Pick 2 in this draft for Walters is probably trading at a discount. But it's reasonable, GC gets something good to give to Carlton, and their forward line remains stacked,
