As you point out, that 2020 list is basically a premiership team on paper and with a decent age demographic. To take the club from that strong position to what we are now has been an absolute masterclass of incompetence. It's nearly impossible to even achieve what we've done. We have managed to get every facet of running a club wrong to have achieved such a feat and whatsmore a lot of people were calling it out in real time.
Round 1 2019, hot humid night in qld playing Brisbane. We didn't look right, not a proud team unfurling the premiership flag.

And from there it went downhill. How many games were we rubbish and then turned it on in the last qtr / 15 mins? Or started on fire with a big lead and nearly get run over? How many games at home was there large sections of the crowd in disbelief and groaning.

Majority were saying: sign of a champion team, they can turn it on and off when they want to, conserving energy, wait for the real games in the finals.

Port Adelaide at home in the wet. Got smashed and didn't fire a shot. "Rain is our kryptonite" malarkey.

We put on a clinic v Collingwood, about round 12? An absolute masterclass. Again the players chose all year when they go and when not to.

I felt so sorry for nic nat, gaff and Sheppard. They were the drivers of the group in 19, having missed the flag. Manic and driven, let down consistently by their team mates.

And then it kept getting worse. Whining and whinging about going east in the coved years. Players left to train by themselves during lockdown and coming back unfit.

The most bizarre one was Jetta. Almost a superstar and then he was gone. No explanation, just banished, like he never existed at the club, scrubbed from all history books.

Possessions kept plummeting but everyone raved about how we were the most efficient team in conversion from i50 to goals.... until the sheer weight of lack of i50's took their toll.

Eventually lazy players that were taught coralling and couldn't get out of it.

And all whilst simmo and nesbitt had their head stuck up their ass waiting for the credits to come good, getting the old band back together, one last time.

Shame on the club. Shame.

The rumour re Jetts was he had a wandering eye and ‘looked’ at someone he shouldn’t have.

He was moved on once his contract expired.

Just no....don't do it half arsed eagles

if you want a player coach get Cripps/Neale in that role

if we are after Duncan .....might as well ask Hurn to suit up next year
How do you know Cripps/Neale will be a better coach than Duncan?

Duncan is just looking for an expenses paid relocation home.

Clearly he thinks he'd like to end up back in WA so why not jump over to the local spud club for a season and have them pay and organise everything for you and your family.

Stick around for a couple years after as a "coach" and you're sorted.

He's so far off being a solid contributor at AFL level though i reckon this is a bad idea. Add in how injury prone he's been and it just looks silly IMO.

Round 1 2019 was a mulligan in every possible way. We lead at half time then got over ran in conditions football has no business being played in … it was the hottest night I’ve ever experienced, at 10pm it was still mid 30s and you were sweating bullets..

That one game wasn’t the over the hill turning point.

Duncan is the sort of dude that would improve the squad if we have a bigger list. If we don't have a bigger list then I just don't see who we cut to get him in.

Yes it's really hard deciding which champion player to cut from our list to fit him in.

Can't find 1 at all...

Champion player isn't the issue, its the relatively strong-ish draft hand and incoming NGAs we have to consider first and foremost.

Yep. I think we will at minimum have 3 open draft first round picks, Possibly 4.

Now if they rate these NGAs/FS and want them we will have to create 1-4 main list spots. Pre listing these blokes would be a huge help but would they all agree to be rookie listed by us if another club tells them they will pick them up in the open draft?

We will be bringing in 2-4 mature age players. Closer to 4 imo.

That’s a lot of delistings and players traded out to open these spots.

Cripps should 100% be rookie listed like Gunstan. That’s an extra one while also retaining him.

J Williams had a terrific game as a ruck forward vs Gold Coast last year. Maybe this is the positional route he needs to look at? Hard to do that though when both Archer and B Williams are also in contention.
When both Allen and waterman went down with injury bailey came into the side after been ok in the wafl as a forward . He then took the 2nd ruck role aswell .

Both Archer and Jwilliams have been stuck as that deepest forward in a team with limited inside 50s and poor delivery . They both have had games where they get no supply and don't get to ruck so they are stuck in no man's land .

Bailey is the problem. No impact as a forward , no impact as a ruck yet he is played ahead of Jwilliams who is clearly a better forward and arguably not much difference in the ruck .

If we get Cameron we should trade bailey

Personally I find the first away game of the 2020 hub impacted season being the turning point. That's where I REALLY thought we were going to be in for some pain and had a cliff coming.

It was the game Red Bull Rowell and his Fold Coast buddy's absolutely destroyed and bullied our hero's, which included Tim Kelly, Shuey, Yeo, Gaff, JK, Naitanui, McGovern etc etc.

Made our senior players look second rate and the real "rot" set in soon after in the hubs.

That was when the Jetta disconnect started and somehow looked like Simpson hated/scapegoat him, and then things just got worse and worse as the seasons went on.

That 2020 season ended with us losing a home elimination final against an undermanned Magpies team in front of a sold out Optus crowd. Kelly had 12 disposals 🚽

Geelong are snakes. Duncan would come across and then nek minute he splits back to Geelong with our best players promised a ford ranger and 20 acres on the coast to go and play for the cats. All signed off by the VAFL Cats HQ

I remember back in my youth being at the Post Office nightclub night club one Saturday night back in 1997. The same day the eagles had just been dumped out of the finals in straight sets that afternoon after a couple of truly insipid performances despite still having 90% of their players from their Premierships still playing. And they all turned up at the Post Office that night. Must have flown straight back from Melbourne that afternoon.

And they were happy as Larry and having the time of their lives. Massive grins on all of their faces. All slapping each other on the back and having a big laugh. And i remember thinking to myself at the time shouldn't these guys be showing a little bit of disappointment in their performances and how poorly they have played? I was pretty unsettled by the degree to which they just didn't give a xxxx. That was clearly the mentality of the list by that point in time. They just wanted to pick up their pay cheques and go through the motions and were not invested in winning anymore.

The people running the club should have seen that and traded a big number of them out while they still had currency. Starting with whichever ones were most lazy and had the worst attitude. Which, of course, we didn't. We stuck in heads in the sand and pretended we still had a Premiership list. And things got exponentially worse from there every year for the next 5 or 6 years.

Watching things in 2020 and the degree to which you could see onfield that the players didn't care anymore reminded me of 1997. And again the people in charge of the club refused to see it and deal with it.
