Had more cred when he worked at Melville Bunnings.
This is the total misconception with the new rules.

The AFL already modelled that in between the arcs boundary frees is only going to creat 4-5 less stoppages a game. So those won't be throw in but kicks awarded to oppo. The premium here is has your TALL or good overhead marking ruckman (not CDT) got into the defensive behind the play position that Cameron and gawn dominated this year.

What no-ones addressing is that the umpires aren't going to wait for the rucks to arrive for field stoppages. 2 things will happen here. 1. The slow lumbering rucks wont make it in time, which will likely see teams field 2 rucks now that the subs gone, to ensure they have one behind the play and one covering up the ground stoppages. 2. The congested "set plays" we see at stoppages won't have time to set up as well. Imagine the current stoppage on a wing with 20 players in a circle. As the ump throws it up some of those players won't get into position and will be stuck on the outside more, fanning out the player spread. This places a premium of the old school footballer with smarts to get the ball out of congestion. The space 25 metre around the stoppage will look different and more open and kaotic. Doesnt help teams like the pies with there super structured stoppages but helps minis style nicely.

Elijah Hollands has another year to go with his contract at Carlton. They are thinking they might have to pay him out

Supposedly he has reformed. Is he keen enough to join us as a psd pick and forego his salary from Carlton to be an Eagle. We can put a strong contract based on behavioural off field issues and bonus on field incentives? At his best, he is a steal. Away from his old life and a long commute away, he might just knuckle down.

Would 13+33+ release of Blues paying him in 2026 get us 10? Through the PSD with terms I think means he can be a rookie or senior list.
It's pretty risky bringing someone with substance issues in. Could poison the youth. There's drugs in Perth too. Look at Oliver, Melbourne are practically giving him away to fix their culture.

Would 100% want him as a train-on at least - would want us to be getting in his ear and offering him genuine benefits/opportunities to entice him over vs the Vic clubs that would likely get him on but in a more exploratory way.

We have these 4 extra rookie spots, sure 1-2 should be used on mature agers to bolster our WAFL side/AFL depth and 1-2 used on spot shuffling to fit Cat Bs in but if there's ever a time we can afford to within that allocate a spot on a potential Stengle situation, this is it.

He's such a massive talent and from the sounds of it it's less of a party boy situation (or a Ugle-Hagan unhinged situation) and more of a problem with alcohol as a coping mechanism for genuine issues - can definitely respect that and also appreciate that the drive still might be there if he gets a good run at things.

Give say Hough or Ginbey their first big leadership task for the club and get him living temporarily with them, driving standards together and encouraging things over the preseason.

If he does a Stengle and has a good year in a state league side then 100% someone else will pick him up and we'll miss out. We've got a unique opportunity with these rookie spots - both for our own sake in that we can afford to roll the dice once on a top-10 talent and for his own comfort in that he's got a better chance of getting a spot with us if he has a great preseason than with other clubs.

Would love us to get on the front foot here. Obviously probably irresponsible to trade him onto our main list right now but as a SSP we should be already selling things to him. These extra rookie spots will no doubt be nice for depth etc but we should consider one of them on a dice roll IMO, and he's the most talented dice roll out there.

Good post.

Yes he was caught with white powder on the GC, so was Bailey Smith.

Sounds like he has some anxiety issues and used alcohol to prop himself up. Not the first nor the last bloke to do that.

Lots of redemption stories in the AFL, and there will be others.

So yes, Who Dares Wins.

Lets not waste a rookie spot propping up the WAFL side. Use it on a potential best 23 player who could help make a difference.

He's still comfortably our best small forward especially with Ryan gone and Owies being absolutely terrible.
Perhaps his absence will give guys like Champion and Newton, but they are still pretty far away. Same with Williams and Walley once we list them.
With only a season or so left in him at most, I'd delist him and pick him up in the rookie draft unless another team poaches him.
This is why I would love us to get Dovaston. I reckon gws traded to the pick before ours to pick him up. We need quality small forwards. Our NGAs are still an unknown quantity. We need someone like Nick Watson.

Delisting Cripps and putting him in the rookie draft would be an insult to a champion of the club who is still in our best 23.
Show some respect .!!!! Champion and Newton are probably 3 seasons away from being ready.
I would even consider extending Cripps's contract for another year which would allow him to reach 300 games.
Newton is ready to go, champion yes is a while away
Rookie listing cripps isn't an insult, just list management. It could be him or a few others tho

SEN Tim Watson.

Adamant this morning that Merrett deal is off. Merrett not being traded.

There's nothing more satisfying seeing the Hawks fail at this. After publically courting OA and dealing away that pick behind our back last year and now wanting a gun for nothing **** them
Good. The more Hawks can't get deals done after publicly courting someone the less likely players will even entertain them in the future.

They've left Merret out to dry after he blew up his Essendon relationship and haven't come to the party with a feasible deal. Other players won't want that.

For mine, it's not on Hawks but on Bombers.

Their list is nowhere near competing for finals. They should be maximising assets before Tas enter.

Merrett for Pick 8 and some change should have been enough.

Essendon have significantly overplayed his value.

Now they don't get a solid rebuilding chip, they retain a disgruntled ex-captain. Perfect for culture building...

When the Merrett meeting was outed the Bombers should not have acted like a jilted lover and instead jumped on the front foot and offered Merrett to whoever could strike the best offer. Allow any other club to court him. Open their options up and create some bidding.

But they threw the toys out of the cot instead.

Why would Cripps give 2 shits about being on the rookie list when he gets paid the same anyway?

Would be stupid to miss out on and NGA/Banfield because we were scared of hurting Cripps' feelings.

He can always retire instead.

Glad you're not list manager

Delist and rookie at the some $$ as a contract and free up a list spot for the draft is what we will have to do. He still gets his money.

Also, not sure he is in our best 23 next year. We have to give more game time to champion/newton, and the incoming Williams, Evans, wally.

He has had plenty of respect. We bought owes in to take his role but that failed. Had it succeeded I'd suggest he would've spent more time in the WAFL and retired.

Love a bit of Bombers slander as much as anyone, but saying on one hand they should be maximising their assets and then saying they should trade their contracted captain and 6 time B&F winner for pick 8 isnt quite computing with me

They have every right to hold out for a monster offer.

Pick 8 ends up 12.

No club is trading out a multiple AA mid in their prime under contract for pick 12 and loose change.

Totally on the Hawks to make the deal happen. Again they approached an in contract captain. The coach invited him and the wife for dinner and sold the club.

Then wouldn't pony up the two 1st rounders that obviously were the required rate.

Pay attention players and managers. Tire kickers who will create you drama and wont follow through.

Hold out for the max they can get for him, but they've got to move him on.

Can't have a disgruntled player at the club and also squander the opportunity to bring in an early first round pick.

He's 30 and they're not playing finals before he retires.

Pick 8 plus a second round is reasonable, I'd have thought given his age.

Not sure if you’re serious or not?

Hawks did it with Gunstan and seem to work out well

Is it possible that Essendon’s interest in pick 2 is to get ahead of Richmond for Robey and not CDT?

If we split 2 for 5 and 6, the likelihood would be CDT and Robey are taken but leaving at least 2 of Sharp, Cumming or Xavier Taylor - maybe all 3 if Richmond choose Grlj

Getting 2 players in that group would be better than one plus whichever player gets through to our pick at 13

If Essendon offer it we’d be mad not to take 5 and 6 for 2 and 13

It’s possible but the draft intel suggests no one knows who is going at pick 3 in the open draft so not sure they would be making a move like that atm. Most draft experts are saying there are a clear 1, 2 at this stage.

Bombers would have a fair idea of CDt capabilities because he trained there in the off season and played for their VFL. Probably in need of some tall stocks too.

If Suns leave themselves short of some points it could make that pick 2 even more valuable if Paterson happens to be in the open pool.
