On Brander, we seriously couldn't have mucked up his development any worse imo

Drafted as a key fwd but for lack of opportunity being trained up as a mid.

The thing is though we started him as a KPF and he was pretty average in the games he did play and was stuck in the queue behind better players as a KPF.

Allen on the other hand we trained as a KPD early on as cover for injuries and he took his opportunity even out of position and has become undroppable.

Did we stuff up Brander’s development or did he just not take his chances and then got over taken by Allen and Waterman and become superfluous as a KPF? Also I doubt anyone expected JK to be playing so well still.

I should probably direct my skepticism at the rumour and less at the poster, to be fair.
Mate you want info just like I do on the club and its failings this year, Im a full member too and pretty frustrated on their performance, so thought Id share.
Dont shoot me.

A first/2nd year KPF didn't set the world on fire (in his 3 games we gave him) so we give up on playing him there?

Or we realized we were way overstocked and decided to fit a square peg in a round hole?

Either way that's a mistep on the clubs part imo

Taking both Brander and Allen was just greedy and short-sighted. If we really thought Brander was the better KP prospect, then take him at 13, develop him as a KPP and then Kelly with the next pick. We wouldn’t have cost ourselves a small fortune procuring him from Geelong and by the looks we would have enjoyed his best years.

I’m obviously thrilled we have Allen, but I think the whole situation is just a result of poor drafting strategy.

And what do we even expect to get for Brander after how his development has been bungled? A second rounder? Yuck.

I work in a residential retirement village and Waterman's Aunty has told me, the club has told Jake to look for another club.

Chris is furious and apparently 10 clubs so far have contacted Jake.

In other news Alec is getting bulk pussy in Melbs.
1 Watermans auntie is in a retirement village ?

2 she told you Alec is getting bulk pussy ?

Also is that bulk as in lots of different pussy or just 1 really large pussy?

Well, he was fed to the wolves in his first game ever, which was replacing JK in a bad loss at the SCG. Even copped a bit of criticism from Simmo in the presser, as I recall.

I remember a poster on here stating that prior to signing his last contract there push a push from he and his manager to train and play as a KPF/KPD. I believe the same poster mentioned it at the start of the year also.

I'm not saying he's guaranteed to be a successful KPF. Hell, he might even fail. That's fine, at least he and WCE supporters won't die wondering.

What we will always wonder about is why the hell, in a draft where we were desperate for midfielders, did we take the highest rated KPF in the draft - a position we did not need at all at the time - and proceed to train him as a winger/midfielder, simply to get him in the senior side as there was no place up forward for him to play due to JK and JD filling those positions? There were a number of mentions on this over various preseasons the past few years about how highly skilled and talented Brander is and that we needed to fit him in the team somewhere.

8 picks later Allen was still available and we jumped at it because we always draft 'best available', regardless of our positional needs. This in turn caused us to miss out on Kelly and then sell the farm to get him 2 years later, which may have set our future development back even further.

Absolutely garbage list management.

Brander may leave and amount to nothing, or he may go to a team that puts him in the position he played in juniors and he may thrive. We'll never know because apart from his first season (in a WAFL team constantly getting thumped) he was thrown all over the place and ended up playing the ******* 'Masten' role of all things...
If someone told you give up pick 13 and 21 on 2 talls and one maybe be your next kennedy/darling you would do it every day of the week .
Also if we lose brander we will get a pick and a 2nd bite of the Cherry

1 Chris's Aunt, YES... lovely lady hates Nisbett.
2 Yes Aunts love it when their nephews get laid too, means more grand kids.

The only problem with that idea is that it only works out ok .... is if you employee a half decent cherry picker, where as we have a potato farmer, doing the job. 🤷‍♂️

Chris' aunt. Makes a lot. More sense. Wouldn't be surprised if there is angst in the Waterman tribe if Jake is being shopped on top of Alec's difficulties.

We stuck by Alec for a long time, same as we did with Venables and Rioli.

How long were we supposed to keep him on the rookie list?

Her nephew’s kids wouldn’t be her grandkids.

We basically took the best available talls at pick 13 and 21 . Brander was a supposed top 10 pick and Allen won the larke medal in the u18 championship .

Branders issues were highlighted for all to see in the wafl last Sunday.

Played as a key defender he refused to put body on his opponent and just hung back and tried to out jump his opponent .

It was a pathetic performance from brander .
Saying that I thought he played well on ball in the last quarter

If we trade out Brander and Waterman I will lol.

Lol and cry.

Our club is in a terminal decline if this is the level of thinking at the top level.

Why?? Waterman is nothing note than a third tall who occasionally gets on the end of a bit of play, cant tackle and cant take a contested mark. He is very surplus to needs is we have kennedy, darling and allen next year and want to play williams as well.

Brander will probably turn into a good defender but again is a dine a dozen player. Was another case of the club trying to be too smart by drafting a bloke who played better at 17 than 18 and slid down the order.

I think you are over simplifying things. There may have been a lot of other stuff going on that could lead to soured relationships without the time given being the issue.

I agree we kept him on the list for a good period of time.

Hmm, the only logic I could see is that we thought one of them could have become a good KPD - which we haven't really tried with Brander anyway, so who the hell knows. Admittedly I was intrigued by his midfield potential earlier in the year, I guess the club was as well - no idea why he isn't playing now - I'm leaning towards my conspiracy theory that it's cap related - don't want to hit a trigger late in the year.

Maybe we just don't rate him as a KPF. But regardless, you would have thought that playing him in his position even if in the WAFL, seeing his development and having a gun key forward who couldn't crack into a forward line filled with guns would have maximised his trade value - rather than a player who's been thrown around, in and out of the side, not able to bed down a place or even dominate the WAFL. How the hell do you get value for him on the trade table? How would you even sell Brander now?

Re Waterman: If there's validity to the rumour, we really do not want or need an Edwards situation at our club - terrible look. And if we're likely to lose Brander, why the hell would we shop Waterman?
