He's not what we need really. He's a slow, big bodied flanker and his limited mobility probably not ideal with us having such a tall forward line as it is. Not saying he's a dud, and I wouldnt have minded if we took him but I can see why we we didnt. Essendon are desperate for anyone half resembling a forward so he's well suited to them.
You can get away with being one dimensional if that one dimension involves kicking goals. I think he was worth the punt to keep pressure on the likes of Ah Chee, Langdon and Cripps. The romance factor was just a bonus.

Yep......4 kicks within 55m would produce 3 goals. Strong overhead, big body over the ball, booming accurate kick and knows where and how to get the ball.....a natural footballer.
Better than AhChee, Foley, Langdon, Petro and Jones now and will be better than the 2022 version of Cripps.

Considering we haven't moved DV & Willie to the inactive probably lucky for him he didn't try to go for a SSP spot with us.
I wonder if there was a little bit of that thought process from the club.

I mean 2 WAFL guys and CC who is signed to the Beagles, those guys were probably happy to get the call up for the slim chance.

But the son of a former player, who used to be on the list, whose brother is still on the list. I'm not sure it would have gone well after a month or two of training 'sorry we actually don't have any list spots'

WEST Coast premiership forward Dan Venables is likely to remain an 'active' player to start the season as the Eagles' train-on players prepare to finish their stints with the club.
Subiaco forward Nick Martin recently finished his training period with the Eagles after straining a quad, while former Brisbane player Cedric Cox and Swan Districts defender Will Collins will continue for a final week.

The deadline to sign players during the Supplementary Selection Period is March 9, with the Mid-Season Rookie Draft in early June the next window for AFL hopefuls.
It is understood the Eagles are more likely to keep Venables available for selection, rather than make him 'inactive', which would have opened a list spot to be used during the SSP.

Venables has not played since suffering a serious concussion in round nine, 2019 but has graduated to some contact training in recent sessions in an encouraging sign for the club.
The 22-year-old remains unlikely to be cleared to play through the early stages of the season.
The Eagles have not made premiership forward Willie Rioli an 'inactive' player and it is not clear if they would be able to do so while he awaits the results of his AFL Tribunal hearing.
Both Venables and Rioli would be welcome additions to Adam Simpson's best team if available, with the small forward spot still up for grabs at West Coast in their absence.

Yeah look the jury's still out on Alec. I wanted us to list him as well, but will hold off on crying for now.

Just because he bagged some goals, 2 from free kicks against Scott Gumbleton on the weekend doesn't mean he can play that role at AFL level.

He's definitely got WAFL level covered as he looks a class above, but there's more athletes in the AFL and a chunky medium forward is going to find it a lot tougher.

We are already carrying 2 players who have circumstances that may prevent them making contributions to the team in Venners and Rioli.

In an environment of reduced list sizes, carrying 3 players who may never play again is a big burden to carry.

Looks like cameron has had a setback with his OP, i really do think another smaller forward option is needed.
Keeping venners on the active list isnt a great move imo.

Probably can't delist Willie if the ban isn't the worst and if we wanna keep him, but I think we could have safely delisted DV and pick him up again when or if he's fully recovered and ready to play. Don't think any other club will poach DV under these circumstances.

We did delist Venables - picked him back up with our last pick in the rookie draft.

Sounds like the club's bullish about getting venners back on the field this year - stoked for him.

I'd be surprised if we were hanging onto him out of pure compassion when an option exists to move him to the long term injury list.

He has been injured for 18 months though..

Supposedly.

When he played he was bad. So the club doesn't play him so he can overcome his injuries.... yet that hasn't happened either.

Would love to know what exactly is the plan for him. Has he overcome his injuries? If not, why not. If yes, is he just building up his fitness base? I'd have to go back to Vozzo's last SJOG injury list update to see if he's mentioned.

I feel like its all well and good to be romantic and keep DV and Willie there but they clearly arent playing in 2021 so why not give 2 guys a go who could fill a gap.

I would prefer we keep them both for now and if necessary then put them on the inactive list before the mid season draft.

At that time in the future who knows who will be firing and in form in the WAFL or VFL and NAB competitions.

Every year there are long term injuries to our list, is this way we hold our powder dry by being able to pick a couple of players up mid season, if we need positional reinforcements, or just pick up a kid who was overlooked in the last draft.

That way we keep our options open to maximise the potential pick.

Bet Cameron leaves at the end of the year anyway.

Lions and Port were keen at the end of last year. We won’t get anything for him and will be a shame because he’s a natural. Really need to get him fit and firing so he stays, plus we need him.
