Someone else names Gaff as well. Let's say we agree on those 2 - I could probably name 2 or 3 from every club that are similar.
Unfortunately the part of our game that has dropped the most since our 2018 season is the loose ball gets which is the 2nd part of the equation when it comes to contested possessions . We are reasonable in the the clearances due to natanui and our clearance quality is pretty high with getting it to the outside and not bombing away blindly .

Our wingers this year apart from cripps are either plodders ( gaff sheed redden Edwards) or cant tackle ( brander sheed gaff Edwards )

Pretty much when the ball hits the ground in the midfield we are screwed we don't win contests on the wing and we are often outnumbered .

If it rains we suck due to our poor loose ball gets and pathetic tackling efforts

Other teams just slow us down out of defence , get us to kick it long , bring the ball to ground then swarm on the loose ball .

'Time to hunt' not for the last 3 years

Gaff should be purely playing outside so his tackles numbles will always be low. BUT Sheed who plays as an inside mid should be able to at least stick a tackle.

I don't mind Gaffs tackle count statistically, but he is elite at getting to the right spots to impact, which means there's a plethora of examples of the opposition running right through him as he puts an arm out in a broken tackle. Maybe other outside players don't get to those spots to block channels, but these days if you're the oppo you don't see Gaff as blocking up anything. The outlet is directly through him as you'll either break free or be able to easily dispose of the footy by hand to someone else breaking into space.

That's not the point I'm making did you even read the post ? If he can't find enough of the ball whats the point in having all these supposed weapons .

Venables was very damaging. When ever he got the ball something good happened.

Venables never got enough to be considered a midfielder.

I hope chesser is different but the stats aren't supporting that at this time
Didn't judd average 15 touches in his first season?

If you are damaging enough with the ball and can break lines....you don't need Matt priddis or bradd dalziell type numbers

Correct, Judd didn't average above 20 possessions until his 3rd season

Not many are primary on-ballers for their club like Sheed though

Probably right - but no other club has a "ruckman on-baller" with such an aggressive mindset either. So there's swings & roundabouts & in all honesty it probably works out in WC's favour.

Yeo & Sheuy missing the amount of footy they have over the last couple of years has highlighted the deficiencies in those no as adept at tackling.

Not sure on how many list spots we have left open, but who would people like to see be given the opportunity to train with the squad. Some local boys who didn’t get picked up who’d be worth a shot

kade Dittmar
Josh Browne
Josh Cripps

Currently 1 spot, potentially (likely, sadly) a second spot with Shep either retiring or being placed on the LTI list.

Assuming we have the cap space to replace Shep (not sure if we get any relief for a LTI) then we should get the max 3 train on players.

Shouldn't the fact we have a generational ruckman/on-baller be all upside instead of an opportunity to carry players less inclined to attack & bring down the opposition ball carrier? In addition to FKASC's point about not many of them being primary on-ballers I think think the task in finding them would be even harder in say Melbourne's team last year, Richmond before that and Hawthorn before that.

You're spot on around Yeo & Shuey, hard to replace stars but I think the moves the club has made over the past few months in bringing in SPS, Clark and even Chesser adds to that depth that just wasn't there last year so that combined with hopefully a few less injuries might get players feeling like their spot is a bit more at risk so the onus to chase/tackle is more required unless they want a stint in the beagles the next week.

I thought someone said Dittmar had already been invited as a train on?

Then perhaps the selections of a couple of boys with some left speed wasn't so bad after all.

That's just a rumour

We wouldn't have much to gain by hiding it would we? Bond didn't know anything about it, unless he is just thinking it shouldn't come from him.

From memory we had no train on players prior to Christmas last year and were particularly cagey about naming anyone we had approached until they appeared at training

Not expecting any announcements re train on players anytime soon if the club holds true to form

He then called someone a dick which rules him out of contention based on the club's good bloke clause :thumbsu:

Is Brad Smith even still at the club?

Normally this time of year his face pops up on the background in a video or photo of the draft team but haven’t seen him this year. Certainly didn’t seem to be in the room on draft night

It's not even a debate. League average was 55.9, so we're nearly 20% off the average. Eagles either can't or won't tackle.
Unless of course the blame lies with the coaches who instructed the players not to tackle, which is a whole different level of concerning.

Yah I noticed that as well. Haven't seen Nissy's son at one of the drafts before. Hope brad is still there because he would've learnt a lot from Rawlings and Vozzo.
