Looks like GC will have picks 6 and 8 after the Rankine trade. Given it seems there isnt a standout after Ashcroft and Wardlaw - we should surely consider splitting pick 2 into 6 and 8 (and we'll probably have to chuck something else in too)
2 and Port's 2nd (26ish) is very close in points value to 6 and 8.

I'd develop our key backs by
a) Playing them in majority def and not moving positions. Learn the structures and one percenters, the mindset that it involves under pressure.
b) Learning the 2 roles of how to lockdown/defend & well as promoting the aggressive intercept marking. They go hand in hand as you may pass off opponents and you gotta know when to make that decision out there on the field on game day.
c) That means you can't be playing on the opponents no1 key fwd as a likely focal point you are just on a hiding to nothing if young and under prepared for it. Playing WAFL isnt always a bad thing.
d) At AFL level be given a job to do. McKenzie got the deepest fwd and was fantastic early days with his 1on1 defence. I feel like Edwards has been given the same role just isn't naturally as good. Bazzo has been off the leash a little bit more played as the 3rd tall which suits him as he reads the ball better but still needs to work on that 1on1 side of his game.

I would 100% be keeping Gov/Barrass in defence as AA level players. 3rd tall can be Edwards locking down. Bazzo can play in the WAFL for now rather than be out of position at a higher level. (Especially since as a fwd he was dead set average last year)

Fwds we have Darling, Allen, Waterman. Smaller is better going ahead and 2 key fwds are enough. We could do with a 2nd year tall already to be putting pressure on that spot but I wouldn't cannibalise our KPD stocks for not a lot of gain.

Well that reads like and new KP defenders dont get any games other than WAFL. And our WAFL side is terrible. The kids do not play on the opposition no 1 forward, that is the job of the experienced heads, they play 3rd tall.

So you are happy to play Allen, Darling and Waterman as tall forwards. None of whom are terribly big nor tall. And we continue playing two rucks.

And we dont try anything new in the backline with Barrass nor Gov.

Vanilla game plan and player development would be the flavor describing all that.

If it wasnt broken fine. Everything is not fine.

Have a look at this photo.
Daniher normal size head
Edwards is remarkably bigger in size to the normal player. It's a melon.
He's got 201cm Daniher covered easily in height too. Tallest player on our list. HEDwards

Full credit to the person who signed off on last years trade with Port to to switch spots in the first round and take their next years second round pick. Getting their pick 26 (which'll obviously be pushed back with the f/s picks) was a perfect result for us considering we all thought Port would've finished at least in the finals, maybe even top four.

Our backline talls aren't the problem. We have 2 of the very best in the country.

There's no shame sitting behind a couple of gun players in order to get a spot. Bazzo hardly did anything than hold his spot this year and likely wouldn't have gotten a gig in any other team. Would you rather him play 90% game time as a key def in the WAFL or 70% at full fwd at AFL averaging 1 mark, 1 kick and 2 handballs a game?

If we push Gov or Barrass fwd and we get a landslide of d50 entries cos we are still useless- then every coach in the AFL would swing them to defence.

We still have to wait how in pans out. It's Chesser + this year's 26 v Sinn or Hobbs from memory.

Blake acres anyone? Not sure what money he's after but he's much improved and could be looking elsewhere.

I'm not that surprised that Port missed finals. They never really felt like a premiership team.

Big Pass for me.

Given the state of our list and the time needed to turn it into a contender, we shouldn't be looking at any player over 24 to trade in.

Besides, Feathers in His Cap, would ask too much by way of draft capital.

Defence is not as important as the midfield. May and Lever leak a heap more goals if Oliver and Petracca aren't there. Melbourne only became the real deal with the emergnce of those two. Before it was Brayshaw and Viney and it wasn't enough.

Midfielders are worth more than defenders, so the best available player at #2 won't be Busslinger. In that game against Vic Met - we lost but Hewett nearly won them the game, not Busslinger. A defenders influence on a game is much more

Be interesting to see if Dev Robertson gets a gig for a final given Rayner is out.
What's that old campaigner's name? Fagan? He been smoking crack. He's been playing Lyons in the midfield, and when a spot opens up, instead of play Dev he plays that bong smoking hippie Mathieson. Old mate even makes up his own nickname, "The Beast". Who does that s**t? Yeah, just call me "The Beast", I'm such a beast I play in the two's.

When you work out you're not good enough and that you need to rebuild your midfield and you reach for Dev, guess what? He's gone mate. Went to the Eagles for pick 38. Snooze ya f***in looze mate, f***ing geriatric crack whore.
