Hi Folks, please excuse the intrusion.
Just inquiring about Brayden Ainsworth whose contract expires 2020
If list sizes remain as is, do you see him getting another contract?
Cheers.

This years draft is highly compromised. We currently have two 3rd round picks. If a fringe player left and we somehow got say a 2nd round pick that pick will likely be pushed out to past pick 45.

So sure in 2021 we hit the draft but in 2020 we should be looking at how to build our midfield depth any means possible.

Wonder how O'Mera is feeling at the Hawks? Left Gold Coast to play finals, Suns are now rising fast and Hawthorn dropping away badly and look like they are staring down the barrel of a major rebuild. Can't see how we could get him but clubs staring at bottom four finishes for the next 2-3 years may well let decent players go to refresh faster. So that's North and the Hawks.

We currently have X O'Neil, M O'Neil, Ainsworth and Foley developing as likely mids. And yes we need to add to that but this years draft with our hand isn't the year we will gain much traction on this via the draft IMO.

Maybe this is naive, but I actually think we should hold onto the picks we have this year. Two reasons:

- Exposed form is obviously a lost cause for many prospects this year. Maybe our crappy picks find their way into a nice slider because of poor information flow.

- Our recruiters have been well aware that they have a crap hand for one year by draft day. They've had a year to try and find some magic beans without, frankly, having to worry too much about the top end. I'd like to back them in to find a gold nugget.

Not much mate. Our keeper league is doing a mid season draft and he is one of the best left in the free agents.
Funnily enough, Jamaine Jones is probably the next best
He would be in the top 10 at our club to be delisted at seasons end . But there are at least 4-5 who would go before him and we will have a few retirees.

He seems to be well liked at the club but has limitations on his game . I would expect he won't be delisted at the end of the year as he is probably the most ready to go young midfield depth we have

I have read a couple of articles saying that if the afl reduce list sizes a lot of clubs will only take a couple of picks in the draft . Means that our 2nd and 2 x 3rd rounders could end up in the top 30 and top 40 players .

There is also a lot of academy and father sons picks so the 3r3rrounders could be a sweet spot when multiple picks disappear before our picks and they move up in the order .

We may even be able to trade the 2x 3rds for another 2nd and then maybe take a delisted free agent .

With our 2nd rounder we could get a slider but also bid on an academy player with more confidence of actually winning the bid

Hurn tipped to sign a one year deal. Would make the games record and 300 games a massive massive possibility.

Would Hurn signing again spell the end for Watson?

'What's the point' of Francis?

Agreed, definitely think we should hold onto our draft picks this year. Every year there's a few players that at the start of the season, or even mid way through aren't rated that highly, who then end up bolting up the draft ranks towards the end of the season. Those guys will miss out on a lot of development this year and also won't be as visible to recruiters from other sides. If there's any year that we're a good chance to land a quality mid or 2 later in the draft it's this year. We really need to get some younger guys in anyway so I don't think we should be trading out draft picks unless a real quality player of need becomes available to us, which realistically speaking I can't see happening with our limited draft hand. If we want to land a senior role player we should be trying to nab a free agent for once, and given that list sizes might be cut this year we might be able to grab a solid one for cheap.

You never know we may well have players request a trade. That means players or picks coming back.

Rawlings is now at North, He knows our list inside and out. He is about to be given the green light to do a major overhaul of the list. I believe he is still on decent terms wirh us.

If you were Rawlings who would you target?

Brander
Williams
Petrucelle
Duggan

They would be after young guys 24 and under.

They'd have another crack at Gaff

With a few of our senior players going into retirement in the coming years along with those who haven't made the grade, we're better off getting in a few younger players and looking at delisted free agents.

Also if the draft has lots of top-end players going via the bidding system won't clubs be using up multiple picks inside the first two-three rounds to secure those players? With reduced lists, clubs will be happy to use multiple picks to secure high-end talent. If we had a late first-rounder or early second-round pick then the bidding system would probably see that pick blow out but given our picks are so late it's hard to see our picks being forced down the order further.

Watson has no future with or without Hurn. He's behind Duggan, Cole, Nelson, Rotham at the moment.

Collingwood and bulldogs have f/s and academy prospects that could go pick 1 and 2 yeah? Will pretty much take them out of the entire draft.

Wonder what gets the conversation started for LDU? Obviously going to be someone they try to rebuild around so might be tough but is a pretty good look imo. Hasn’t broken out yet so will come at a relatively reduced price (in comparison to what he could turn into) and is a good age to target (quite a bit of the development done already but not quite old enough to necessarily be demanding a starting centre square spot, could even play him on our wing that’s up for grabs weekly). Brander + what?

No it doesnt.

Would be silly to give up on him IMO. Jetta may be close to the end as well with list reductions.

And if he was let go Freo would snap him up and play him.
Ooh. Zesty.

Really sucks to be a depth player this year. Feel for the guys who don’t have a chance to prove themselves, but also annoying that it’s consigned players like Watson and Brayshaw into list cloggers

Not sure about that. Is he getting too old?

And his previous rejection wasnt taken well PLUS Gaff is chasing a flag isnt he?

Gaff is incredibly durable, maybe our most durable ever. Imagine he'd only improve in that space playing in Melbourne. Plus he plays a less crash and bash role than a pure inside midfielder.

As mentioned above, we might win the flag this year.

I'll go on record saying that my comment was Kangas could come for Gaff, not that Gaff would want to leave, or leave for North.

Don't know how I feel about Hurn going on - I think I would prefer he didn't, but understand his motive to do so, to be our first 300 gamer.
His form has dropped noticeably this year.

I agree and just hope if he can get to 300 he is still playing well enough to justify his position.

What I simply do not understand is why sign any 30 plus year old now?

If player and club are happy for one more year why not wait?

I suppose the player wants some security and to be shown a level of respect. But we did the exact same thing with Priddis, extended his contract and then his and the teams form afell away and he retired in contract and presumably got some payout.
