I like it how this has turned into comparison of behaviour of indigenous players.

Because white peoples don’t have behavioural issues or beat up their missus.

It is only relevant because we are talking about two young Indigenous men (from WA) no less. Who are both extremely talented but demonstrating differing degrees of poor decision making.

In terms of Taylor-

What do we know help about violence and unhealthy relationships?

That the best way reintegrate men who have engaged in that behaviour in education, particularly around healthy relationships, with good strong postivie role models around them, structure, discipline, invest in them to help them create a positive future for themselves.

A good footy club with a strong culture, and one that invests resources in to Indigenous welfare to achieve the above is a great way to do that.

Horse said it himself (prior to recent allegations) - Some people arrive at footy clubs with more work to do around maturity and decision making then others.

If you put Elijah Taylor in to our footy club and you get him to see folks like Jetta, Kelly, Ryan with their families and how they treat their relationships etc, while supported by Chance and Narkle, it is EXACTLY what a guy like Taylor needs.

I don't mind giving blokes a second chance, but they can put in the work first via WAFL if they want a redemption story.

Help those who help themselves. We don't know the full story but from the outside looking in it seems Taylor put hands on his partner, it got out, then he somehow came across her again and repeated the actions. He is the complete opposite of who our club would open their arms to. The disharmony within the playing group, their partners and the club staff would set us back so much more than we could gain.

Go and grow up, Elijah, we'll talk in 3-4 years if someone desperate hasn't grabbed you first.

What you are essentially saying is "we (the richest, best resourced club) might take a look at you if you excel in an environment (WAFL) with limited resources and support".

The way we should look at it is " do we think our culture, and our resources, in terms of player welfare/Indigenous welfare can be beneficial for him to learn how to make better decisions and reach to required maturity? And if so, will that benefit our club?"

Than there is next to zero purposes of having an Indigenous welfare dept, and we should just stand them all down, because it is really just for show.

Not giving those guys a second chance has nothing to do with race or the welfare dept. It has to do with most thinking they aren't great ppl and our club isn't the spot for them to thrive.

Not picking up players we deem to hve massive red flags doesn't mean the dept should be canned.

WTF

All i know watching us play this year is we are dead short two classy half forwards.

Like it or loathe it, without Nicnat firing we are a mid tier side. With our mids fully fit and with nic in place we are a top 4, potentially a top 2 side.

Except without Naitanui, Gaff, Sheppard and Kelly we won a flag two seasons ago.

Not bad for a mid tier side!

That's why I asked.

Sounds like he is moving.

Just watch all the players who will want to move to either Brisbane and Gold Coast this trade period. Both teams are on the brink of some exciting years challenging. And this covid thing won't be done and dusted by next season so they will just move to Gill's QLD hub permanently.

Just wonder if Kelly has had a word. Cockatoo would be very nice in the pressure forward role......if we could get him fit.
I thought narkle was more of a smaller inside mid rather than a forward ?

Would love him coming off the square as he is quick and hard at it .

Then rotate him on ball

If Taylor is guilty he should never play AFL again. No excuses.

Just wait a minute....................got to go get my pitch fork and some wood.

It will depend on the circumstances and seriousness of any assault.

Both parties involved are immature kids so depending on the nature of the incident throwing away the keys on the lad is a bit harsh.

Like a lot of young mids he's played a fair bit forward as the big boys get the big roles.

Someone from the Cats board said he's a better mid not so much a forward.

I can't help but feel we need to a slight shift in thinking around our drafting/recruiting this off-season.

We are "around the mark" but since our 2018 flag, we have lost a little bit of class, particularly with our small forwards. A lot of that is losing Le Cras, Venables, and Rioli.

It would go against the grain considering we are preparing for smaller list sizes, but I can't shake the feeling we need to be a little more imaginative around who we bring in to the club this off season. I want us to go for high risk/high reward recruit.

The most obvious choices:

Sydney Stack
Elijah Taylor
Nakia Cockatoo.
Why do ppl keep mentioning Venables when talking about us missing class in the forward half? He showed very little in his time with us and was gifted a grand final hopefully he wouldve come good but i had high hopes for Tunbridge too.petch and Cameron have shown more than him snd can hardly make the team

I agree, he has a lot of work to do around character development, judgment etc.

Being recruited to West Coast could be a catalyst that helps him make that transition.

We know full well that Liam Ryan has had issues, before being recruited to the club (Crown casino) and in his draft year (DUI/blow up with his missus in Geraldton).

If we think that we have created a strong culture over the last 10-12 years, and are serious about using our standing in the community and AFL to promote and uplift Indigenous prospect, taking someone in the position of ET and putting in resources to help him with that transition is exactly why we have Narkle and Bateman.

It's very easy to take a someone like Buddy or Adam Goodes and make hay. The whole point of investing in our Indigenous welfare is recognition that many of the Indigenous boys have barriers and obstacles to overcome due to the social/cultural and economic conditions they find themselves in due to intergenerational impacts of colonialism/racism.

To not dig deep in terms of our capability and capacity in this area undermines the reason it exists in the first place.

When Narkle was stood down during the COVID breach, he was an Indigenous mentor at the detention centre/prison in WA.

He is well equipped to work with the Stack/Taylor types that need structure, guidance and mentoring in order to reach their potential
Taylor shouldnt have been drafted at all.all through juniors hadnt displayed anything close to the professionalism needed to make it.the swans took a punt tho but it didnt pay off

It is exactly what it is saying. The whole purpose of Bateman and Narkle's role is to work with the club and players who need extra help and guidance around decision making, judgment, mentoring etc. Their job is to help players adapt to an environment in which we know SOME players struggle to adapt to.

If you think that Phil and Chance are spending a whole lot of time working with Tim Kelly and Lewis Jetta, two people who took to AFL environment like fish to water, you don't understand their function, what they bring to the table in terms of expertise, and the reason the club has them on their payroll.

When considering Stack or Taylor, 3 simple questions need to be asked:

Question: Do Stack and Taylor have the talent to play AFL?

Answer: Yes

Question: Do they have areas of their lives they need to work on (work ethic, character, judgment etc)?

Answer: Yes, definitely

Question: When considering our resources, culture, environment and systems, is our club a place that can help them on the journey to do that?

Answer: ......

Has anyone watched the trade podcast on the AFL site with the heading "Rival clubs circle Eagles free agent?"

Who are they talking about? Gaff again?

Just listned.

They are talking about Sheed who is out of contract next year.

Also clubs are interested in Hutchings who is out of contract this year.

Would you mind telling me about how Willie Rioli and Mark Lecras went in 2018, also compare 2018 cripps to 2020 cripps. 2 weeks can be a long time in football let alone 2 years.

I would have thought the additions to the 2018 GF team in Naitanui, Sheppard and Gaff would have covered that.

How about I just match your Rioli, Le cras and Cripps (form) and raise you with the improvements in Allen, Duggan, Cole, Waterman and Nelson?

As for Cripps his form has wobbled around a bit this year, doesn't mean it can't return.

Hutchings?

WOW. Would not have thought that.

He is pretty professional and a decent role player. Clubs want him to mentor some up and comers?

What clubs though? Weird.

Was taylor the player that the U18s player group wanted out because he wasn't committed , had a bad attitude and turned up when he wanted ?

Pretty sure the WA u18s committee overruled them and played him anyway because of his talent knowing he would get drafted

Been watching a few games from the 2018 season and it's not our forward line that is the problem now.

We moved the ball way faster and more precise from our backline compared to this year .

Our slow stagnant ball movement from defensive this year has allowed team's to set up .

Jetta being MIA and hurns refusal to take on the risky kick is to blame I feel .

Maybe they need to be instructed to take risks and give a guy like rotham a license to run , carry and kick into the corridor

I though it was Sydney Stack that U18s didn't like.
