Player Watch Corey Gault (Retired 2016)

Great turnaround so far this year from a player this board was pretty much unaminously calling to be delisted at the end of last year. People were saying he couldn't play at all... he copped more than any player I can remember.

He's improving, that's all we can ask, but with Moore improving at a more rapid rate, and Witts, Grundy, Cox, and Keeffe (next year) all improving too, he has an uphill battle to get many, if any senior games.

The problem with Gault, and Cox, at the moment is they only show one small patch of good form a game. Is that enough for selection in the seniors? Probably not.

I suspect if we see Gault or Cox in the round 1 side we have a more serious injury problem then we do at the moment.

But it's good to have players with some ability to call on if we do need them.

It seems both of them have overtaken White...

Bring on the excuses of he didn't play against anyone blah blah.

He played excellent last night and did so due to confidence, In his game and his body. Last year he couldn't get on the park and even when he did he wasn't confident with those both. Hope he continues to improve and plays some senior footy this year.

Almost by a pure minutes perspective, over the intraclub and pre season hes almost been our best performed player. But we saw this same thing last year so im yet to be convinced. Id love Gault to really go back into the VFL and start kicking bags of 4 or 5 on a regular basis. But if this form continues it'd take a brave coach to say sorry your not playing round 1. Although he does have to get promoted first doesn't he?

I liked what he did and have been a bit of a fan of his from last pre season as well. Seemed a little lost at AFL level when he's had his chance though and I wonder if that will be the same this year. To my eyes, I thought Cox's game last night was very strong and his improvement has been stellar. He's the one I'd be slotting in next to Darcy and Trav for round 1 at this early stage.

All he can do from this point is keep kicking bags of 2, 3 or 4 goals and he will stay in the side. Easier said than done of course, but that's what guarantees him some sort of role.

Jesse White's failings as a footballer have shown that there is an opportunity for at least one key forward to step up and take the 3rd tall role, which suddenly becomes the 2IC if one of Moore or Cloke are injured.

If I were Gault I'd be worried about Mason Cox though. He's still on a learning curve but he's racing up it like a 7ft hare. If I was Bucks and I had a 211cm bloke who takes big marks, kicks straight and has developed that footy nous he initially lacked, I'd be itching to get him into the side.
Yes cox looks likely type, and his height...
White, hmmm just not footy smart.
I assume Jesse doesn't read big footy, it would get enough to turn him into a raving looney

I'd had him written off at the end of last season, would have traded him for a bag of Sherrins.
Encouraging to see the role / opportunity he'd been set in the intra-club flowed through to the NAB Challenge match last night. He got out the back on several occasions and played that role very well.
Clearly done the hard work in the off-season and given added bulk to his carcass looks to have had plenty of sessions hitting the tin.
While some way off a regular 22 spot, early on he's showing enough to perhaps explain why the club has retained him. Question burns though, if one was to come off the Rookie list now, would you take Gault or Cox? Both will need time in the seniors but will have to be promoted first.

Maybe but I fel Cox may have a greater rate of improvement also Gault in two games this year albiet intra club and NAB had shown agility and accurate kicking. Will be an interesting year ip forward

Gault-Cox and White would absolutely wreak havoc in the VFL. On the form they've produced anyways. At the moment, Cox and Gault are dangerous tall forwards at AFL level. Behind Grundy/Witts/Moore/Cloke they are probably going to have to settle for VFL despite form. Yes, White would be the third tall forward in the VFL, considering he has produced some good games at AFL level as the second forward, it's fair to say he should dominate as the third tall at VFL level regardless of how inconsistent he has been over the years.

How is Gault and Cox, but particularly Gault behind these two in a forward role? Without the sub rule it will be interesting to see how most sides decide to pair their rub combination, but I think we would be making a huge mistake at the moment running with Witts and Grundy in the same game, considering the exposed form of Gault and Cox in the forward role who could also chip out in the ruck. Considering both Witts and Grundy being the old school number 1, 75-80% a game ruck man, for mine it's up to them to fight it out for the ruck role, and up to Cox, Gault and White to fight for that third forward/ruck role. For mine, that's our best structured side, especially considering based on last night we want to move the ball with speed and skill. I'd have more faith in those two reaching the back than I ever would have in Grundy and Witts

Get shit canned everywhere. Imagine he cops it buying his bread and milk.
I guess he can just pretend he's a politician, they get canned all the time.
Must be terrible being bagged all the time

White better perform given the prospect of Cox and Gault tearing it up in the VFL, a supporter could very well do the Tonya Harding on him to get one of them elevated.

I was a believer 2012-2014, but he lost me last year. Therefore I'm taking an it's only NAB Challenge view on him.

He's hitting the scoreboard in non-traditional KPF ways by getting out the back a lot. Either he smells or defensive structure at this time of year isn't as in tune as it is come the season proper.

That leaves a couple of questions. Will we keep this ball movement up in the home and away? And can he add another layer to his game? If so I think he can play a part because like Tory Dixon at the Dogs he's a smart footballer who makes the most of his opportunities.

If the skill drops away and he finds himself under added pressure I don't think he has the tricks to hit the scoreboard regularly which is what happens at VFL level.

Put it in to context

The coin he is on and the output match. However if he has games like the nab one where he presents and kicks straight then hes going to be worth more than his perceived value. Especially when you put him next to blokes like White and Cloke.

You make some valid points, problem is, Witts is too good for VFL too. If Gault and Cox keep their form up, and Moore keeps coming on, then I don't know what will happen to be honest.
