The Brisbane Lions have used their final pick of the 2016 NAB AFL Draft to secure Sandringham Dragons player Corey Lyons.

Taken with pick 71, Lyons is an inside midfielder who plays in a similar vein to his brother Jarryd at the Gold Coast.

He is a very smart player and despite lacking run away from the contest, Lyons uses his high footy IQ to find space.

Versatility is one of his attributes and he can play forward as well.

GWS’ number two overall pick Tim Taranto scored a 45 in PE (along with a 40 in Business Management) while Essendon’s Jordan Ridley and Brisbane’s Corey Lyons scored 40 and 42, respectively.

Lyons was particularly impressive as one of two players to score a 40 or higher in three different subjects, with the other Collingwood’s Sam McLarty.

The brother of Gold Coast Sun Jarryd, Lyons achieved highly in multiple subjects, recording a 40 in Further Mathematics and a 44 in Psychology

Really happy we ended up with Lyons. I mentioned this on draft night but I was actually hopeful we'd end up with him but knew it'd be a bit of a stretch with our early picks in the 20's so I was disappointed we didn't have a selection in the 30-55 range to pick him up. To get him with a pick in the 70's is a steal in my opinion. Can find the footy and use it well.

I would really like to see Corey given a crack in the seniors at some stage this season. From the reserves games I've seen, he seems to have a high footy IQ and has good positioning, like many old school players that aren't endowed with blistering speed.

Neville Fallon Brisbane Lions Reserves Best and Fairest
For the first time in Brisbane Lions history, the 2018 Neville Fallon Reserves Best and Fairest Award has been spilt in a four-way tie.

Ryan Bastinac, Claye Beams, Ben Keays and Corey Lyons have tied for the award at the Lions' Club Champion awards night. All four players have made an outstanding contribution to the NEAFL team this season, particularly during the second-half of the year.

In his second season at the Lions, Corey Lyons was solid for the NEAFL side. Corey played the most games amongst the four award recipients, playing all bar one match in 2018. With a footy IQ beyond his years, Lyons impressed coaching staff and teammates alike with his development throughout the season.

Congratulations to the four recipients of the Neville Fallon Reserves Best and Fairest.

#39 - Corey Lyons
Corey Lyons had a great second season at the Lions and was rewarded by being selected as a joint winner of the Neville Fallon Reserves Best and Fairest. A smart and skilful midfielder, Lyons averaged 26.6 disposals a game across his 18 appearances for the Lions’ NEAFL side. He also chipped in with 11 goals for the season and made a total of 77 tackles.

He kicked two goals and racked up 40 disposals against the Giants in Round 21 in what was his best performance of the season. With a footy IQ beyond his years, Lyons impressed coaching staff and teammates alike with his development throughout the season. Lyons went very close to making his AFL debut in 2018 and will be hellbent on achieving this goal in 2019.

History of brothers at the Lions
The Brisbane Lions will carry two sets of brothers on their playing list next year, with the Berry brothers and the Lyons brothers in competition for one special honour and united in their quest for another.

At stake, first, is the distinction of becoming the fifth pair of brothers to play together for the Club at AFL level. Will 20-year-old Corey Lyons, heading into his third season, for his AFL debut alongside 26-year-old brother Jarryd, who looms as a likely first-team pick after a trade from the Gold Coast Suns?

Or will 18-year-old Tom Berry, drafted by the Club last week, progress so quickly that he joins his 20-year-old brother and first team regular Jarrod in the AFL side? And, in a scenario that would suit both families, can the Lyons brothers and the Berry brothers become the first pairs of brothers to represent the Club together in more than 20 years?

It has happened only once. And it was not a day the Club remembers fondly. It was Round 11, 1998, when Michael and Brett Voss played alongside Chris and Brad Scott against the Fremantle Dockers at Subiaco. Not only did the Lions lose by 71 points but Captain Michael Voss suffered a horrific broken leg.

The unseen: Who is yet to play senior footy at your club in 2019?
Corey Lyons: Now in his third season, Lyons is dominating the NEAFL and absolutely bashing the door down for a senior debut. Caught behind older brother Jarryd, Lachie Neale and Jarrod Berry as inside midfielders. Is out of contract.

Who might play in 2019? With a reliable squad of 28-30 players to choose from, injury is the only avenue for any of the above to get a call-up. Lyons, Skinner and Berry are the most likely candidates if injury should strike.

The Lions, fielding 21 AFL-listed players to nine, dominated from the beginning with midfielder Corey Lyons’s 42-disposal outing one of many impressive performances for the home side.

Coach Mitch Hahn was not shy to praise the 21-year-old, admiring his work ethic over the course of the season. “He’s been fantastic,” Hahn told neafl.com.au.

“His improvement and growth as a player this year - he got challenged in the pre-season around some of his transition stuff, he’s ticked that box. We’ve challenged his contested footy, he’s started to pick that up, he’s picking up clearances. “He’s playing some really good - no, exceptional - NEAFL footy this year.”

Six depart the Den

The Brisbane Lions have advised five players they will not be offered a contract for the 2021 AFL season.

Sam Skinner, Matthew Eagles, Toby Wooller, Jacob Allison and Corey Lyons were informed of the decisions during end-of-season meetings carried out this week.
