COMMUNISM!

COMMUNISM!

Wait... maybe communism is the only way out of it?

More socialism than communism.

Even before covid, an increasing percentage of Australians either worked directly for government in service delivery or indirectly in heavily government subsidised health, education or construction work.

As it becomes increasingly difficult for small business (the old world "engine room of the economy") to thrive and survive, the government will need to step up further and employ many more millions of Australians directly or indirectly.

You've said this about every ******* State/Territory except the PRV of course.
Many people seeking treatment in ACT are transported to Sydney.
They don't have ICU support for pediatrics.

And yes most of our healthcare system has been underfunded for a long time. Certain states and territories are worse than others.

Also why would Canberra want to be like Sydney?

Nah, he's right this time. The issue is economies of scale and the fact we have to have our own health bureaucracy (something like 6,000 staff, of whom 3,500 are nurses) when we really should just be outsourcing this (like we do, for example, with policing). Hence my point about Canberra needing a City Council rather than a pseudo-state government. It's exacerbated by not having the talent pool available in either the government or the public service to manage this effectively.

Coupled with staffing issues (which I assume affects health delivery everywhere), we do have some of the longest waiting times in the country.

QLD have finally removed the hotspot designation for SA which will allow people in SA to travel up to QLD.

Means I've got myself a holiday to look forward to this weekend.

I had one to the Gold Coast coming up this week too, but I had to cancel because SA is still closed to QLD, so you can't get back without quarantining. Hopefully QLD have sorted their cases out before you need to come back

We just need to flatten the curve
We just need to socially distance
We just need to have smaller indoor gatherings
We just need to wear masks
We just need to lockdown for a few days
We just need to lockdown for a few weeks
We just need to get vaccinated
We just need to lockdown.... etc etc

Yes?

And if you're in South Australia, because people have complied with these directions and the government has acted quickly, your life has been minorly inconvenienced compared to basically everywhere else in the world where people have been in extended lockdowns as the virus ravages their communities.

Yes mate, used to play rugby with him.
Got Covid that gave him sepsis and all downhill from there. Has been in a coma and on dialysis for weeks.

Sad to hear. That is the problem with COVID it causes other problems
"The source of the recent outbreak in South Australia which resulted in a seven-day lockdown was from somebody who had contracted COVID-19 during their period of quarantine in NSW."

Interesting.. when Melbourne went into lockdown after someone contracting covid in SA hotels as well...

It's almost as if hotels made for tourists aren't safe for a airborne virus?

Maybe send them all to NT where they have purpose made quarantine.

The AOC should be in the face of Scott Morrison not SA.

The Howard Springs facility is full. The Federal Government knew that Australia's athletes would be returning home in August yet Howard Springs is full !!! Had the athletes flown into Darwin or any Australian city other than Sydney the SA contingent would not have been doing double quarantine time. The AOC and the Federal Government knew this two weeks ago yet they could not make alternate arrangements for 16 people.

The SA Government cannot win. If they grant exemptions to 16 Australian athletes they will have the, 'wah wah spoiled sports' brigade whinging if they stick to their guns and insist on quarantine they will have sections of the media trying to stir the s**t.

I actually think our public health care system is amongst the best in the world, especially given that access to it is not governed by the size of your wallet.

Not saying that it hasn't got significant room for improvement or that state government spending hundreds of millions on, say, a new basketball stadium would be better directed towards improving staffing numbers in hospitals.

Just saying that called it 'f’ed' is simply not true.
I agree. We have one of best health systems in the world.

The trouble is that public hospitals, especially those in capital cities, run close to capacity every day. There’s hardly any slack in the system.

And that’s done deliberately to some extent. Too much free capacity and you have waste (doctors and nurses laying idle). So it doesn’t take much to put the system under stress.

If the pandemic doesn’t convince both federal and state governments to put more $ into hospitals and broader health system nothing will. It’s part of the answer to a return to some kind of normal.

The Heruli were a Germanic tribe during the Migration Period (about 400 to 800 CE). Procopius states in his work The Wars, that the Heruli placed the sick and elderly on a tall stack of wood and stabbed them to death before setting the pyre alight
If Nicola Spurrier was born in Germany 1500 years ago her sainthood would be all but confirmed.

Yeah by the time I get back (I'm only going to Far North Queensland) the border will have been shut for almost 4 weeks. QLD opened their border to SA after 3 weeks of no cases today, so I'm hoping for something similar for SA opening up theirs to FNQ at the very least. If not, I'll consider staying in FNQ for another few days until it hits the 4 week mark (I would assume 4 weeks of no cases they'll open it up by then), or worst case scenario I quarantine at home for 2 weeks. It is far from an ideal situation at this point, but mentally I'm shot right now. This is meant to be my Honeymoon (and now is also a baby moon), but I've changed this trip so many times from overseas to Hamilton Island to Noosa to Port Douglas to Darwin and now back to Port Douglas that I think I'll go insane if I stay home any longer.

Royal Show cancelled for a second year. There's panic and extreme risk aversion.

The "experts" say they're doing it to keep us safe. What they are indirectly saying is, "we don't believe the precautions we have surrounding our tight border closures with exemptions for essential travellers are actually tight enough, and our incompetence is resulting in us having to cancel the Show at your expense."

Good to hear that you can finally get away mate. Hope it all works out smoothly for you. We only had a week booked unfortunately so there was no chance for us. Part of the family's flights were flight credits from my cancelled flights up to Brisbane for the GF last year had we made it, so i'll lose those, but that was always part of the risk. I knew it was a risk but i'd booked at the time where neither SA nor QLD had had cases in the community for months.

How many come from interstate for it?
I'd imagine most of the stores and rides etc. are usually NSW based.

Kane corners had a nice whinge about Spurrier and the Marshall government in regards to the poor Olympians.

These people are so clueless

SA has no choice when hotel quarantine doesn't work.

Criticise the federal government who refused to build them.

If you can't accept that lockdowns work I can't help you. Epidemiologists and infectious disease experts say they work. Craig Kelly and George Christensen say they don't, so you're in good company

Maybe

Who were you flying with? Push for those credits to remain flight credits - the reason you're cancelling is because governmental border closures have meant this situation is out of your control. Most airlines have been extremely flexible in this situation - they can't afford not to be at this point.

Alternatively, go up to Darwin for a week. Weather is lovely this time of year and there's no quarantine upon returning to SA.

Maybe

NSW is a good case study if it wasn't so sad.

They already do via family tax benefits because businesses don't pay enough. When you have the likes of Harvey Norman etc. having their employees low paid enough to need it, it is them exploiting it.

Small businesses are struggling because of huge businesses like Amazon and internet giants and large chains who take profit only and contribute little.
It's capitalism that is eating itself.

Exactly, so why would anyone go.

Are we pretending it makes money off the sheep show?

Because local country shows don't have people come from intestate eg Kadina, so it would just become a big local show. It would still have value for a scaled down version.
