Lol at the US government blaming China for them being too incompetent to manage corona.. always gotta be someone else. *******s
A chronic failing of governments everywhere. Even in NSW there is a lot of energy being put into making sure the Ruby Princess gets the blame for misrepresenting its status rather than any failing on the part of the government. It's obviously a sign of political weakness to admit a mistake :(

My wife's school has been notified by the Principal (apparently via the Department of Education) that they are all expected to appear at school every day despite the change to remote learning with schools being functionally childcare. Working from home will only be for those staff who have underlying health conditions. Seems fairly ridiculous to be honest.
Lol, so teachers can't be trusted to work from home.

Schools in Dubai have now been shut down until the start of the new school year in Late August.
Today is a month since they were closed.
So far online schooling has been ok for our Year 9 son.
He is studying at an English curriculum school and doing his GCSE.
The interesting part will be the exams as the UK has already said they won’t be held this year.
Our school has reduced the term fees by 20% and school bus fees are being refunded or credited to next year.

I heard on the abc this week that the Advertiser were pulling down the paywalls so that everyone could read their right wing crap. Perhaps it’s not happening?

Right wing, the Advertiser? Lol

Look I don't read the paper or the news.com.au sites but the ******* fear of Rupert like he even gives a toss about the minute revenue stream of Aus.

How did the kid get it? Seems a key omission from that story?

If anyone should be angry at a body for lack of into it is the WHO. Once again showing how utterly worthless UN bodies are these days and especially the WHO now bought by China. Incompetent doesn't start to describe their performance during this.

Their propergander of the Chinese government is frigging disgusting....and painfully obvious.

24 deaths is less than 1 per million.

A fantastic effort by the governments, medical staff etc.

Compare with:

Italy 218 per million
Netherlands 68 per million
UK 35 per million
USA 15 per million

Flattening of the curve is promising but we shouldn't compare to those other countries, we are behind them by a few weeks and not in winter yet, we've definitely got to it a lot earlier than them. Long way to go yet needs to be sustained.

Cares enough to spend resources putting and maintaining his puppets in government.

Because he's all on his own there right?

What I'd like to see is we are having deaths from Covid but what's the normal death rate per day?

Also interesting to see how up s**t creek countries who predominantly accepted China's help are vs the rest, looking at you Italy and Spain.

I think comparing to other Southern Hemisphere nations is more relevant.

Anybody watch 60 minutes on Sunday and the story about the virus and how China, covered it up, then lied how many cases there was, that deaths happen and then stuffed up President Xi Jinping let 5 million people leave Wuhan over 12 days from January 7th before they shut up shop??

They interviewed science journalist Laurie Garrett who is an emerging diseases expert and has reported on outbreak of SARS and Ebola and other emerging pandemics and epidemic threats . Got a degree in biology was doing graduate work in Bacteriology and Immunology, but started doing science reporting, never got her PHD and became a science journo.

She blames Xi for cover up and Trump for saying China did a top job with footage of him at Davos World Economic Forum said under control, only 1 person coming in from China and gonna be just fine, and also this tweet on 24th January, 25th China time and they already had around 2,000 reported cases and 50 deaths, but who knows how many really.

She talks about being one of 3 scientific advisers for the 2011 movie Contagion, they did a lot of thinking about what to put in the move, but reckons now this is so far beyond what anybody imagined. They didn't have the whole world economy collapsing.

Gets asked - So in your imaginings is your government responding the way you imagined the way it would, the way it should??

Laughs - almost snorts - says "I'm sorry. You know we made a big mistake with that movie, because we never imagined an incompetent American government. So in all of our plotting the government was actually the hero. It was intervening to save the people and that's just not the way it's worked out. We've now had the president say openly more than on one occasion, that he's weighing in the balance, the future of the stock market, against dead bodies, in this country."

Gets asked about Oz and says - "what you're experiencing right now is not the major assault in Australia. That will come with July and August. So when you go into your winter that's when Covid will really hit you."

She says we are still going to get hit, can't avoid it. "You are taking reasonable steps but not had the brunt end of this, and that's yet to come."

This could of been avoided?? "Absolutely! Absolutely! And China knows it. Which is why they they are working so hard to create a different narrative that doesn't put the blame on Beijing."

Since I saw this on Sunday I have been thinking over the next few years there are going to be a shitload of docos and movies made about this all around the world

Can see Ken Burns making another one of his 8 to 10 part masterpiece doco series around 2025 or 2026.

Beijing will make propaganda movies about Xi being the hero and directing the strategy to overcome the virus.

Almadovar will probably make something about the Spanish experience.

A few of the Italian directors will have a crack. Not sure if Benigni can make a comedy out of this tragedy like he did with Life is beautiful.

Boris will get cast as bumbling Boris

The Germans will make a new version of Contagion 2011 movie with their efficiency.

Hollywood is going to take their rage out of Trump and make his look fully incompetent and narcissistic.

edgie you are a movie buff, who will get directorships and key roles around the world?

Will one of the commercial stations run it, in prime time? Foxtel? Steaming services? Relaunch it at the movies? Or would that be like showing a plane disaster movie or doco on an inflight movie channel - you don't do it???

Trailer for Contagion the movie that Laurie Garrett worked on. Plot is that an executive returns from a business trip to Hong Kong, she dies, her kid dies, others start dying and CDC discovers the virus is a mix of genetic material from pig- and bat borne virus. See more plot at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contagion_(2011_film)

we made a big mistake with that movie, because we never imagined an incompetent American government.
Technocrats are always surprised when facing governments' incompetence. "If only power was given to us, that wouldn't happen" is their common reaction.

Usually, they also argue to be liberal democratic at heart. They don't see the contradiction at all.

Italy has accepted a lot of help from China.

On the topic of Italy, yesterday marked:
1. Four straight days with >1000 recovered
2. A new high water mark in terms of the amount of testing they did (and a new low in positive results)
3. Five straight days with a less than 100 case increase in ICU, and a new low increase in hospital numbers.

This is what the hospital strain looks like under the two week sample:

Things turn very slowly. This is what the death count looks like for these full two weeks. Just a straight linear increase.
