Am I the only one cynical enough to suspect that the numbers of infected are being fudged and/or held back? Or am I just totally cynical and beyond redemption?

Each state and territory is reporting their own statistics. It is absolutely in their best interests to be completely truthful so that they can justify diverting more of their Budget into strengthening their health response as well as hitting up the Australian government for resources.

It is also in the best interests of quarantine enforcement to ensure people know how serious the issue is.

Due to availability of test kits, whilst Australia's testing response is high it is still targeted, so we may not have the full picture of community transmission. But that is different to intentionally withholding information.

Even medicos are flouting orders to self-isolate. A story in the Age reporting that 33 medical professionals who landed at Sydney Airport on a flight from South America on Friday night disobeyed police orders to go into quarantine at an airport hotel. Federal police stopped 7 of the 33 from boarding domestic flights but the rest succeeded. Doctors will wind up hurting innocents including their own.
Thats an interested case of limited reporting. Its seems there's a fair bit more to it.

They're listed as being from South America, what they leave out in that report is that the medical professionals had a stop over in the Falklands, before taking a private charter plane from the Falklands to Australia. Where were they before that? Antarctica since 29/20. They were entirely isolated from other flights when they landed in Australia. Those who lived in Sydney, left the airport in cars that had been left at the airport for them.

The ones who lived interstate, they were following direction that they'd received from the police on Friday night, stay at a hotel Friday night continue their journey home on Saturday morning. The instruction on that changed after some of them had caught a plane.

I was under the impression that the virus lasts 2 weeks in the body but some others are saying 6 weeks?

Australia has gone from 400 to 4000 in the last 2 weeks and there are only 200-odd recoveries. Meaning just under half the reported figure of 400 still has it.

I wonder when the influx of reported recoveries (and unfortunately deaths) will come.

The WA health minister today said that they've been randomly and 'covertly' testing samples from people who have presented with various illnesses but haven't qualified to be tested for covid-19 and all have turned up negative. This would indicate very little unknown community transmission is occurring at this stage.

It would be only an influx of recovery numbers, deaths would be pretty much up to date daily I would have thought?

I live in Nuriootpa and it is fine. Two people at Lyndoch Hill winery were traced back to the American group. After that debacle pretty much every Cellar Door closed down. It was now over 10 days since they were here and there have been no further positive cases linked to them.

There has been two other cases here. One traced back to one fo the cruise ships the other is still under trace and track investigation.

Today's announcement is essentially making the point to people 'don't come here' there is no point as everything is closed. It's for tourist more than anything.
Ok thanks for the update

I’m going off medical opinion - the medico in the ScoMo presser essentially said the same thing so I give it more weight.

Following on, it’s unlikely the US will suffer the high mortality rates we’ve seen elsewhere. The data backs this up.
The medico in "scomos presser" is a liberal plant. Actually almost probably lacking more brain cells than Scomo himself but he makes up for it with his his eyebrows. It has been overwhelming of the decision of the medical fraternity that we require much stronger restrictions that should of been implemented much earlier.

It can shed for up to six weeks. The test only detects the virus, not whether it is a live or dead virus.

Medical resources to run out in one week in New York City the worlds greatest city is living week to week?

In the meantime the great leader Donald Trump is talking about relaxing the social distancing rules in order to stimulate the US economy.

That is not as bad as the President of Belarus who claims that, 'the corona virus can be beaten by farm work and vodka'. Apparently the same guy was interviewed at an ice hockey match where he said, 'we are safe in here as the corona virus will not survive around all this ice'. Belarus is one of the few countries in Europe that has not cancelled it's sporting fixtures and the Belarus football is being beamed into most European countries.

Then there is Boris who was boasting about shaking hands with everyone. That was just before he tested positive.

and I thought ScoMo was bad.

Australia continues to have a linear progression even in the weight of Ruby Princess, it would appear progress might be being made with the restrictions being used. Seven straight days below peak.

For those with some understanding of Australia's medical situation, if we were to average 250 new cases a day over the next two months (assuming a similar proportion of mild/critical/ICU), could that be handled?

It takes up to two weeks for symptoms to show up in tests. The infection lasts longer than two weeks.

Modern journalism 101 - never let facts get in the way of a good story.

Is public transport still running a full service where you are? Our bus website says they're dedicated to getting you where you need to be despite their boss yelling everyone that's in your own home. Even the school buses are running a full service, despite anecdotally less than 20% attendance.

It's be cheaper, and safer, to send everyone who does actually need to travel an Uber.

One of the anchors on ABC News breakfast said it was ok for those in isolation who owned more than one home to travel between them.

What is it these muppets don't understand about "stay at home"?? It isn't "casually travel between all of your homes infecting people along the way"

You kind of expect this rubbish from the gutter press, but coming from the government-funded ABC, who still have their followers amongst the Chardonnay socialists, it's irresponsible.

I watched ScoMo's presser this evening and the medico there basically backed this up. We're seeing some fruit from our efforts, the main concern now is transmission in the community as we have effectively turned off the tap with overseas returns.

We went harder and earlier at it than much of Europe and US. I think they were also farther along in terms of infection spread so we have the benefit of catching it earlier. I doubt the US or anywhere will be as bad as Italy - it turns out that Italy has been experiencing unusually high numbers of flu deaths among the elderly the past few winters, more so than the rest of Europe so it's not surprising that COVID-19 has had such a devastating impact there.
Australia did well in testing earlier and frequently. That's a tick. Our biggest mistake was not closing our borders early enough. I'm stating the obvious in saying that there was only one way for COVID-19 to get into the country. And that's through overseas arrivals. Don't let the virus get into the country in the first place. Our other big mistake was relying too much on self-isolation. Too many people flouted that rule. In Vic a squad of 500 police officers monitor people on self-isolation. About 40% aren't following the rule. Some had legitimate reasons like going to the shops but the others are being bloody minded.

In the last 5 days or so we've seen growth taper off (apart from the jump of 460 on Saturday). If we saw 10 to 15 more days like that I'd feel more confident in calling it a trend. I don't think 5 data points is enough.

And my main concern like yours is community transmission. If that's not controlled we're in much bigger trouble.

The numbers for NSW are going up. I think that's one reason the NSW premier has said she might go early on Stage 3 restrictions.

I had to cringe as I watched Queensland Electoral Office staff manhandling thousands of voting slips without gloves on the weekend. Research in the US has found that COVID-19 infection can last on paper or cardboard for up to 24 hours yet we have AEC staff working without basic precautions. Morrison is all over the TV giving us some sound advice yet there is no protection for the workers.

Latest figures show that over 700,000 Queenslanders did not cast a vote. Interesting to see what happens re fines.

That puts a completely different light on the way it was reported by the media. Can I ask how you tracked that info. down.
