There is no specific research on how well face coverings work against new variants of the virus, including the more transmissible variant from the United Kingdom that has been detected in at least 22 states in the United States.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said that when it comes to wearing two masks to protect against the coronavirus, it "makes common sense" that more than one layer of masking would be more effective.

The new variants "may lead people who have them to have a higher amount of virus in their nose, in their mouth, so that when they breathe or talk or cough or sing, they may put more viral particles out in the environment than the average person," she said.

I'd like to know the scientific view/studies done here ?.

Are people even doing much of regular testing in Australia these days? I was led to believe on the other board that things are pretty good now and all back to normal apart from travel.
Depends what you mean by normal. A few on that board accept (or even embrace) mandatory masks, limited indoor capacity, QR codes, ubiquitous hand sanitiser are now the 'new normal' and the only thing we're missing is travel. I do not consider anything introduced since Covid to be normal.

Yeah, my parents live in a border town. It doesn’t sound normal from their point of view.

What a joke

Fake news. Fear Blaa blaa. How about **** off.

I’ve had a better look not using google and the story is about a covid breakout in an old people’s home near Como. No mention of vaccines.
It's always good to get someone's view who lives there to try to figure it out especially when information is hard to find. Would seem to be important if they'd been given vaccines or not.

I liked how you said the Italian Govt, weren't going to give vaccines to people that had already had SARS Cov 2 virus, so if its not related to vaccines, is there anther outbreak in aged care?

German public Health officials are warning that there is not enough data on over 65's to safely give it to them.

Vaccine maker Mereck is saying, this it's better to get the virus and recover.

Can't wait for their kids to look back at the albums in years to come and wonder WTF the parents were thinking.
Nah, they'll be told it was the beginning of the great new world that they're living in by that point.

Or they won't even know who their family is.

I've had a look at the commentary piece the two Virginia tech authors put out and commented before, but have a look yourself.
They cite a table of poorly designed observational or epidemiological studies with debatable results and discount the random controlled trial of 6000 human participants in Denmark, that showed no significant difference in getting COVID if you were wearing a mask or not.

They refer to research done by themselves, comparing different face coverings on inward and outward protection efficiency on manikins that is in preprint and hasn't been peer reviewed.

They found, wearing a properly fitted vacuum cleaner bag as a face mask, will filter about 60% of particles that are five times bigger that a SARS CoV 2 particle.

But this can't have been too palatable to sell to the people recommending masks, so instead without doing any testing, they recommended wearing three masks instead.

They fail to consider the need to breath O2 for humans, or the effect of rebreathing the resultant CO2 with any of the masks tested or in their recommendation to wear three masks! They measure which masks collected water particles on teh inside but didn't discuss the literature on teh danger or re inhaling water particles with virus or bacteria which has been show to cause viral or bacterial infections.

Read it for yourself, here is a summary.
They say "a causal relationship has not been confirmed" between mask wearing or an interest in masks, and lower COVID incidence of COVID positive tests.

They say, "a review of 10 randomized controlled trials of mask wearing in non-healthcare settings concluded that there was not a substantial effect on influenza transmission in terms of risk ratio, although most of the studies were underpowered and compliance was not perfect (Xiao et al. 2020)."

"The ability of a mask to block influenza virus was correlated with its ability to block droplets/aerosols containing only phosphate buffered saline (PBS) and bovine serum albumin (BSA)."

"The filtration efficiencies of materials and medical masks, challenged with sodium chloride (NaCl) particles of diameter 0.03–0.25 µm, ranged from <10% for polyurethane foam to nearly 100% for a vacuum cleaner bag (Drewnick et al. 2020).

"A SARS-CoV-2 virion is 0.1 µm in diameter."

"The surgical mask had a single layer and was advertised to meet ASTM level 1 specifications, which require ≥95% filtration efficiency of particles larger than 1 µm."

"Using a Collison 3-jet nebulizer , we generated challenge particles of size 0.04 to 1 µm from a 2% NaCl solution. The particles filled a 280 L polyethylene chamber, in which we placed a small fan to promote mixing."

"In addition to challenging the masks with submicron particles generated by the Collison nebulizer, we also tested larger particles ranging in size from 2 to 5 μm. We generated these from a 2% NaCl solution"

" We evaluated both inward and outward protection efficiency of face coverings using two manikins mounted on opposite sides of a 57-L acrylic chamber (51 cm × 34 cm × 33 cm)"

We evaluated the ability of the face coverings to block droplets larger than 20 μm.

Following the vacuum bag and microfiber, the surgical mask was ~50–75% efficient over this size range.

Discussion: "The vacuum bag, which achieved outstanding performance compared to other materials with regards to material filtration efficiency was able to filter out at least 60% of particles under perfect conditions, and had from a calculated formula of protection from outward particles of 50% and 75% from inward particles, that were 0.5 μm and larger."

Wearing a properly fitted vacuum cleaner bag as a face mask, will filter about 60% of particles that are five times bigger that a SARS CoV 2 particle.

Good to know!

They make no effort to measure CO2 and O2 being rebreathed with a mask on. Other studies have shown can cause headaches and blackouts. The closest they seem to come to address whether the manikin could breath, was this;

"During the testing of inhalation, we noticed that the vacuum through the inhaling manikin can suck the mask tightly against inlet opening, thus reducing the size of any gaps. However, this phenomenon also illustrates the tradeoff between breathability and filtration efficiency"

They also observed variability of hydrophobicity the mask material during the testing, with a danger of water containing bacteria being reinhaled, causing lung infections. They observed particles with the highest deposition rate on mask materials were those around 2 μm and state SARS-CoV-2 RNA has been detected in particles in the size range of 1–4 μm.

Didn't you say your provencince was up to 400 cases a day?
1 case anywhere here shuts everything down.
From all your posts you seem a friendly dude and committed family man and an expat who is still a proud Aussie.
But fwiw my advice= don't come back. It's not the same country or people. Covid is insane and everything else means Australia is not the place you grew up in.

That being said, Trudeau definitely meddles with the elite who are pushing their alternative agendas here. He's right in on the global reset

Yeah, that doesn’t happen here. We kind of had a lockdown from March to April. But the whole point was not to overwhelm hospitals. Even in this second peak the active cases are only 4,000 or something. Schools, restaurants etc are open. Domestic border is open.

Been here over a decade and pretty settled so no intention of living in Australia again. Sure would be nice to visit sometime though!
