In the peak fortnight of the outbreak to date (25 August to 7 September), the COVID-19 case rate among 2-dose vaccinated people was 49.5 per 100,000 while in unvaccinated people it was 561 per 100,000, a more than 10-fold difference. The rates of COVID-19 ICU admissions or deaths peaked in the fortnight 8 September to 21 September at 0.9 per 100,000 in 2-dose vaccinated people compared to 15.6 per 100,000 in unvaccinated people, a greater than 16-fold difference.

Opposition Leader Matthew Guy has ruled out locking down Victorians at any point if elected next year, launching his campaign one year out from the 2022 state poll.

Officially launching his campaign for “positivity” in Dandenong South on Saturday, he guaranteed: “No ifs, no buts, no more lockdowns.”

“The Coalition gives a guarantee, lockdowns are a thing of the past,” Mr Guy said



Under questioning, Mr Guy was later forced to concede there could be “very, very limited circumstances” that lockdowns were required.
“I don’t think we’ll get to that circumstance, to be frank.”

Federal Labor leader Anthony Albanese urged the Morrison government to go further and reintroduce a period of quarantine as soon as possible for “all relevant international visitors whilst an assessment of what the potential health impact of this variant will be”.

In reality, that could mean a much larger list of countries, including parts of Europe and North Asia.

Sixty-one travellers from South Africa in Netherlands test positive for Covid

Dutch health authorities said that 61 people who arrived in Amsterdam on two flights from South Africa on Friday tested positive for Covid-19, Reuters reports.

Authorities are conducting further testing to see if any of the infections are with the recently discovered Omicron coronavirus variant.

Absolutely valid questions, that can be answered after we suspend all international arrivals until we find out.

Hopefully it turns out to be another one of those flash in the pan variants that don't take off.

I think the point is at the moment they've found a new variant and a few have taken a worst case scenario and run with it and now there's mass panic.

The experts are basically saying take a deep breath.

True but panic or lock down or isolate for 2 weeks is not bad insurance if it is worst case scenario
 
At one point does the bed-shitting over new variants stop? It's well-established that COVID is here to stay and that it's not going to be eradicated and, with that, will come mutations every year. Fingers crossed that there are no lockdowns from this, otherwise, things will never return to normal.
 
I read a doctor saying the new variant symptoms are very mild, sore muscles, fatigue but no loss of smell or taste, barely a cough.

This is wonderful news and what we've been waiting for. Super spreading mild covid everyone can get, get over and get on with life again.

Unfortunately our nuffies in charge will go full 360 and believe you can have covid 0 with the omricon strain and begin with lockdowns again.

There shouldnt need to be a lock down if you can control the point of entry for a few weeks via proper Quarantine facilities

It would be irresponsible to allow a delta variant to spread when there is a much milder variant that can take over, smother and replace delta that is far safer and provides natural immunity.

To keep delta and block out omicron would be a choice against health outcomes if the testimonials so far are accurate.

Is it known fact yet that Omicron is the lesser threat ?

Surely 2 weeks of border clamps and quarantine until this is confirmed as fact and not fiction makes more sense ?

I agree. Get more data and then be comfortable putting wide open travel on the table if it's shown to be far easier to spread and far milder
