I reckon it's an area the wider populace rarely have to consider and confront the associated risk.

The reactions you see when the anaesthetist says you could die from an intubation are pretty sobering for a lot of people.
I've had a bit to do with this space in the past, and it is worth noting that anaethetists are in the top few well paid medical specialist groups in the country for a good reason. There are so many variables that need to be taken into account with every procedure.
Another thing that we don't hear enough about is the rate of accidental death due to prescribed opioids post surgery, particularly minor surgeries. I'm not pointing the finger at specialists here by the way. It is getting close to the major cause of accidental death in many cohorts, particularly middle aged men.

Furious agreement here.

My experience in theatre has been limited to a support role.

I always felt that those facing the absolute front line of responsibility deserve all the respect and understanding their burden commands.

As with the complications associated with individuals and surgery, the same understanding and rigour needs to be applied to the complications and possible implications of vaccination for covid.

There's always risk & with that factored risk taken into account, the risk is still outweighed by the benefit. At this stage, heavily, imo.

Just on vaccinations and opening our country up - I’d be all for that if I was able to ******* get vaxxed

in the state of SA as someone who works in liquor retail I am deemed an essential worker, we are open, we work through lockdowns and we only shut for one day last year when we ran out of beer after doing Xmas Eve like trading in 5 hour prior to the November circuit breaker.

my wife booked an appointment for Pfizer yesterday but I was turned away because I’m32 and don’t fit into the federal governments vaccine rollout matrix.

albeit we saw 1500 people a week during the March-may lockdown in2020. I’ve spoken to the abc today, and they are doing an article tomorrow - 90 percent of our tier 1/2 exposure sites here, which are full isolation/quarantine including your family, are retail and hospitality sites. Of which anyone under the age of 40 cannot get the Pfizer shot if they are healthy human beings.

i get slowmo has*ed up and we don’t have the supply, but we’ve got 20 yo kids here working in coles and Woolworths who would be having countless interactions every day and not being able to protect themselves because of some ******* cooked government matrix, yet a bloke in a ******* abattoir in WA can get the shot.

That must be very, very, frustrating. The supply issue is extra confusing because of the ad hoc distribution methods Imo. I qualified but couldn't get pfizer, then could, then couldn't get a booking for months, then got one the same day after checking the booking sites one morning.

If it helps, even us unhealthy humans can't get one. I'm having to jump through hoops as I'm undiagnosed-ish with a neuro disorder (treatment is for symptoms only at the moment), and can't get in yet...but someone who lives with someone who has bipolar can get the vax.

Not that I have any issue with people caring for those with mental illness getting access to a vaccine, but the whole matrix of who is eligible is absolutely cooked.

Then there's the actual in clinic policing. I've had mates get in with as much as a never used asthma preventative prescription and then others absolutely grilled with multiple notes from their doctor and hospital discharge statements.

Just an absolute bungle.

Apologies if I have misinterpreted you post, but I believe that the benefits of being vaccinated outweigh the risks.

so I had a booking, and as I understand it, that means a vaccine is allocated. I don’t know where that goes once I’ve been turned away.

our CHO was asked about vaccine lottery where you wait in line and at the end of the day you have the opportunity to pickup one of these leftover vaccines - her response was we don’t want people out in a lockdown.

essential workers are already out working in this lockdown. It just is incredibly annoying

So we just wait this virus out, live like we currently are, watch society crumble around us until a 100% bomb proof vaccine comes along in 5, 10, 20 years time?
You do realise that other established vaccinations also have rare instances of extreme bad reactions, including death, don't you?

Missed the point, read the posts. Pick a lane, I will not elaborate any further to these lazy jabs.

Nah mate, this is what a lazy, moralising post looks like:

This has happened more than once to people who took this particular vax.

In a sane world this gets recalled immediately, but for some reason it's still being distributed despite this. Highly unethical.

It's not unethical at all, it happens with many vaccines. So, your point doesn't stand up.

It might be worth taking into consideration that if the bloke in the abattoir gets sick, the place shuts down and supply chains get rekt. There's not a lot of those kinds of facilities and they can't overproduce due to the nature of the product.. so in the grand scheme of things it makes sense to minimize risks in that sort of place. If a bottle shop has to close you just head to the next one down the road.
Feds have bungled it severely, we shouldn't have to be making choices like this anyway

In any other circumstance of medicinal/drug tests it gets immediately recalled even if it’s just one outcome that’s how its always been. Doubly so when its experimental, which mRNA is.

But sure big number must mean big good.
AZ is not MRNA. Perhaps get the facts right before going on a rant.

Your assertion is just plain wrong. For example, medications are the leading cause of allergy-related sudden deaths in the U.S yet they keep using the drugs that cause them because they save far more lives. It is the same with AZ. It has saved thousands of more lives than there are fatalities related to it. Just in the UK that is already over 30,000. As of April when the UK had administered the first dose to 21.2 million, there had been 32 deaths from clotting. The risks are very low and are far outweighed by the benefits.

We should outlaw surgery and day procedures

Sure, it might be life saving, but at what cost

Had a bit of experience in this area. You get alot of " my child is scared of the dentist " ( so the child does not go to the dentist ) and there is poor / terrible dental hygiene. Factor in poor diet's, lack of specially trained paediatiric dentist's in communities, the cost, parents dental health and you get the resultant children with " bad " teeth.

The option for some is anaesthesia for dental care as the continuance of their poor dental care leads to other health problems.

Does anybody have any advice on how to get started on weights? I'm 50 and haven't been to a gym for 30 years. My wife has a treadmill in the garage and I'm jealous of her every lockdown, she just gets fitter and I just get fatter. So I'm thinking of getting a bench press and some weights.. is that a good idea? (I had a couple of footy ACLs so I don't like running but have kept fit through swimming.)

Look into getting a trainer at a gym for a few sessions to give you a program and show you the ropes. I was hesitant about going to the gym for years because I had NFI what to do. Had a few sessions with a PT on sign up and barely miss a day outside lockdown now

Firstly good job and well done, there are plenty of ways to drop weight and as you're still a young fella you'll be fine. Bulge is right but not sure I'd be taking advice from "Bulge":p In this new era of viral transmissions being fit is going to become imperative I would suggest.

A PT is the best way to start and I think joining a gym is also better. Make sure you weigh yourself and enjoy the gains or losses as is your wish. By keeping a check of how you're going it gives you the required motivation. Or of course females running their hands over your arms at a pub is also motivation but as you're married use a journal .lol

I'd probably do some basic exercises between now until the end of lockdown, and yes will be great for your knees to have less weight on them.

Good luck- we probably should have a fitness thread where we can all swap ideas and motivations.

Great thanks for that. Might be a good thing to come out of this lockdown if I get going on this. My Dad still had a bench press in his 70s and a fencing contractor I know in his 60s same, they're both fit active fellas.

If you have the money, get a PT. Otherwise always have a set workout routine, know what days and time your gonna go.

start of slow because form is KEY and if you rush in to heavy sets with bad form it’s a recipe for disaster. So if you need to do body weight exercises that’s okay but just tone the weight down until you’ve perfected the form. Once you’ve perfected form of exercises such as compound, push yourself add that little 2.5kg it will promote progressive overload.

You don’t need 18277382 exercise in one session, find 4-8 for each session.

track your progress, how many sets and reps your doing at what weight (if it applies), beginning weight, this is so you can look back and say you’re doing more than you did last time.

you’ll make mistakes! But don’t be ashamed because everyone starts off somewhere. Enjoy it and have fun, when you progress in the gym your knowledge will expand.

also remember recovery is important, so eat and sleep well.

Edit: my inbox is open if you need any help

Yep you I imagine could be fit into your 60's-70's. Just takes 5 hours a week, not much time really.

And December is "rig" pic month around here- so get cracking :p
