There aren't any capitalist countries. Australia is a mixed-market economy. We have a free market system, but we are still heavily regulated, we have relatively high taxation rates and we have a pretty good safety net for those in hard times. It isn't infallible but it is pretty good by world standards. The irony is that the Heritage Foundation rates Australia at number 3 in the world for economic freedom, United States is 20 and sliding.

We are a capitalist country. Its stretching semantics to breaking point to say we aren't. There are very few things not "owned" by private enterprise and nearly everything, even footy, is driven by profit. You keep whinging about the focus on vaccines effectively to the exclusion of all else when the only reason that is happening is that we live in a capitalist society. "Ivermectin isn't patented. Its a 3CL protease inhibitor too. Blah blah blah." - Tas

As for the "Heritage Foundation"...

I'll refer you to Killer Mike's song Reagan.

Early indication is that the new variant is much more infectious than Delta but far milder in terms of symptoms, this would be a significant boon if we had a milder virus to contend with.

When people refer to Capitalism as the boogey man then yeah, the semantics matters.

We use a free market to determine price because we have limited supply, so supply and demand dictate price. Profit is a motive even in communist China, if X costs more to make or supply than funds you receive then the differential has to come from somewhere.

Do you think the Chinese workers in the Apple factory own the means of production?

Mixed market has dominated because nothing else seems to work remotely as well. A system that doesn't implement a free market system has to somehow find another way to emulate the effect of incentivisation and risk taking that occurs in a free market system, this is the primary driver for innovation, the only real alternative other systems have found is at the end of a gun and that isn't desirable.

The problem with big pharma isn't that it is profit motivated, the problem is that it isn't regulated in the USA anywhere near what it should and they have found it is cheaper to buy out politicians than it is to be innovative. That form of crony capitalism is a problem, but it is a self-defeating problem. If America doesn't address the monopolies and oligopolies then the empire is doomed and the next empire will rise. It is a self-correcting mechanism when it comes to cascading failure to adapt.

Whilst we have currency, we will always have a mechanism to allocated resources based on how much of it you have and it will always be profit motivated regardless how you dress it up.

Of course not. China is also a capitalist society, but its one with an authoritarian central government.

This is why Star Trek works.

Most of that is true but we are less of a mixed market than we once were. In that time wages have dropped relatively speaking and prices of everything have risen significantly.

The problem with big pharma you are eluding to is a consequence of the way the profit motive drives big corporations to interfere with regulation. Almost the opposite situation to China right now (where the state is exerting its power over capitol because it doesn't want to lose power to capital,) is what you describe happening in the US. No cos of communism tho. Just cos its an entity (a state) that has power and doesn't want to lose it.

In the West the state has so little power that US Congress and Senators didn't want to use the word Ivermectin in a debate in case a big tech company (google/Youtube) censored their debate. Even critics of Ivermectin have been banned by youtube for using footage of Bret and Heather from Dark Horse to criticise it. Its gone beyond Crony Capitalism over there. Its full regulatory capture across the board. At least at the federal level. The parties don't matter which is why people argue so passionately about sideshows like trump.

Hope that's the case.

Lots of examples in history where over time viruses become more virulent but less deadly. Even the common cold started out in 1890 as a far more deadly virus than it is now.

Plenty of breakthrough infections for plenty of diseases require isolation/quarantine if you test positive. You've lost the plot bro.

What's so amazing about this? Vaccinations don't prevent someone getting covid, they greatly reduce the symptoms and limit its potential to spread. Of course quarantine would be required.

The sample size is so small its not really worth talking about. Most Delta cases are mild as well. We will know more in 2-4 weeks.
