Im living overseas in a poor country at present.
It relies on close family contact/markets/public transport with meagre health facilities or the money to afford greater care.
I believe my partner and I have had covid back in April, when a worker we had went through the capital city. He got sick for three days (a newborn baby with his wife) . The country had a March for solidarity on the issue (love will defeat the virus).
Then they took it a bit more seriously, and now masks are encouraged, hand washing and feet cleaning before going into stores etc. Otherwise life hasnt changed other than tourist numbers have been cut off.
We talk to friends and families. One friend has 40 brothers and sisters for example. Deaths are occuring with the elderly, but normally in conjuction with them having other health issues.
Crime is increasing. Economically they can survive on not much, for example my area its still horse and cart for a lot of families to get to the little township. But in the cities its often 10 people to a house no bigger than the average aussie shed.
My observation is this, is that If this flu was as deadly as we are making out, I would be seeing bodies in the streets. Its not uncommon to see a couple of bodies due traffic accidents on the way to town a couple times a year.
Over time I have come to the conclusion that the worlds solution to this 'pandemic' is the biggest over reaction in my history.
Yes wear a mask. Wash hands. If your sick dont socialise if possible. Isolate people over 50/60 depending on their health. Restrict international travel if necessary.
But the closing of state borders, shutting the economy and the host of other restrictions im hearing about in Australia is unfathonable to me. Ive waited a while here to see what would happen with time. If this was something like ebola i could understand the world shutdown.
I fear dengue/zika/malaria way more than covid. Its no worse than SARS, certainly in my opinion.
The economic effects are far worse than anything else that may happen.
It would appear hysteria rules current thinking in the West. I dont want to be contentious, but what im reading and hearing from australian people about the daily restrictions and enforcement is totally out of proportion to the virus.
I can understand people enjoying time off work is about all.

Ventilators are essential for many gravely ill people. But using them for covid has to be the absolute last resort due to the damage it does to the lungs and the infections that they can introduce . The Ventilator panic was quickly dispelled as a false requirement, as they were not helping in the way they thought they would early on.
