Of the bottom 12 sides, it's a pretty reasonable order that represents where each club is at, the only real anomaly being Melbourne who traded their pick anyway.

The league will also be keen to see GC maximize their hand again, so a lottery is a no go...

Just have 2 drafts in 2021 if the entire season is written off. One for the 2020 draft class and one for the 2021 draft class. Draft order will be determined by the finishing order of the 2021 season.

This "Corona Crop" will feel hard done by but i don't think they will be overlooked. Just draft size will be compromised immensely with the soft caps taking a massive $3m hit and list sizes dropping is a certainty, i dare say a shortened version of the carnival may (if possible) be completed at seasons end, if not after, and a combine with more invitees than ever as clubs (at the end of the year) will really put as much time into who they are after than ever before with the lack of game vision and showcase time, and access to players for interviews during this time, as i believe the draft will only entail possibly only 2 picks per club and for some a slight chance of 3.Who knows for sure when and if the draft will take place, maybe nov/dec, maybe jan/feb. If all goes well next year and the year commences as normal (new normal, whatever that may be) the flow on effact will not compromise but slighty hinder to an extent the next 1 or 2 years of players coming through. more players (undrafted) will want another chance at 18's level as 19 yr olds (if thats how the competition continues to run) and some (u16's)who are coming through the underage levels will miss out on a chance to play up a level. the draft positions (if no games are played this year will stay exactly as they were when picks and positions were traded for during the draft last year, afl will say you trade for picks and change positions in the draft knowing you may win some and lose some, but as no games were played the order is as stands, they afl will not alter that or change the draft into lotteries, its to much fuss, too much to not avoid legal action from clubs, the order is already set and we wait to see how the year goes and where the ladder takes us, if no games are played and the ladders was unaffected the order is as was and stands. all of this is of course IMO

Will make the matching of high end draft bids interesting.

Some teams might not be able to generate enough points to match a high end bid, and end up carrying a modest deficit in to the 2021 draft.

For other teams, there won’t be the incentive to trade down for multiple picks for points.

Over all, it might lessen the compromised nature of the draft.

Can academy clubs automatically prelist any age eligible kids?

i.e. Can the Dogs automatically prelist JUH for next year? Similarly can the northern clubs automatically prelist any of their kids who have graduated school?

If you allow that then you're telling clubs without academy kids they can't draft anyone at all while clubs with academies get to. Does not seem ideal

Could turn the NAB cup into a 3-4 week camp where everyone tests on the way in and is then played out in isolation. A few short round robin tourneys and some marathons/endurance tests. There's probably an old FIFO mining camp somewhere with an oval that you could turn around on the cheap.

It has to be a lottery.

As a supporter of a team that has just started a rebuild, we need our top five picks this year AND next year. We don't want the drafts combined - a superdraft improves the depth of late first rounders and helps teams that are already competing.

Sorry, but we need those drafts to be seperate, so an early pick means more!

IMO the AFL will do everything it can to get a 17 game season plus finals. They’ve spoken about going deep into the year. I think they’ll then have a draft probably January 2021 even if the draftees don’t get any games in. It’ll make things harder for recruiters that’s for sure.

Fair enough. Maybe merging this and the next draft may be the best option. Bummer that the cats have like 10 to delist and no draftees this year if that's the case. If club lists get trimmed to 30 players the cats might even delist more and throw some lifelines around.

I actually think that would improve your hand not diminish it, you have a lot of mid range picks that would effectively become second rounders

I suspect if things don't restart very shortly after this current hiatus then that will be the end of it.

State junior carnivals can probably go ahead at some point, as can the draft combines.

Usually the top 8 changes little after 10 rounds anyway and this year 10 rounds would be nearly 60% of the season (normal season it's 45%). That's way more integrity than last year's ladder position. The saints of 2019 for example changed their head coach, will be sacking most of their coaching staff (like everyone else), and that's before we even get into their list changes which were huge. It's inaccurate to say that the football clubs that hit the field in 2019 even really exist anymore
