I read somewhere in the last week that there was an overseas traveller that brought it to the Kimberly.
Fly in fly out workers who were supposed to be isolating also going out to buy booze. Quite a few vectors for it to spread up there

Went out to the shops to get something for work and there are still quite a few people leisurely shopping in groups for stuff that isn't essential. It's good economically but you get the feeling most if them are oblivious to what is happening.

The government has already said it will take 20-30 years to recover economically . Just amazed at how generous and how swiftly everything has been implemented .
Yeah it's pretty crazy, especially for a Liberal govt.
As a government there are times when you just have to act in a way that would, in normal times, be irresponsible and economic madness.

War and world wide crisis are basically it.

The USA are so restricted by their silly constitution.

It would have been unconstitutional to impose a travel ban from New York state for example but would've done wonders for the curve there.

It's because of that that the US will be new epicentre soon enough, if it isn't already.

The US currently has 311k cases
New York alone has 114k cases

Next best country is Spain on 126k

New York is the new epicentre for this. With hindsight the comments from the mayor and others to go out and enjoy themselves seems almost criminal given the predicament they are now in. Their arrogance in dismissing this as just a mild cold or flu has come back to haunt them big time.

The rising number of ICU cases is the big worry still.

Yes and on this metric WA is well behind, mainly because we have so few ICU beds per person.

Currently, 11. 1% of our beds are taken up by COVID patients. The next most in a state is SA with 4.7% of beds.

Maybe it's due to WAs recent economic woes but we're really behind other states in ICU beds.

Firstly, a good percentage of those ICU patients have come of the cruise ships, so that's not a big problem.

Secondly, you have to adjust number of beds for population. I think we're on par, NSW seems to have more per population than anywhere else, but this is probably partially because they have more population centers (eg syndey, Newcastle, Woolongon etc).

Your first point is a good point.

On your second one, based the figures covidlive.com.au, WA has about 16,000 people per ICU bed. That's the most out of all the states. The next worst is Victoria with about 13,000 people per bed. The best state in this regard is actually NSW, with 9,300 people per ICU bed.

bit disappointed with the increase today but as long as it keeps low then it should be fine.

recoveries is very encouraging. 33% of infected folks have now recovered.

sadly the icu folk based on previous stats have a slim chance of recovering but fingers crossed

Keep in mind that case numbers increasing today are infections that occurred prior to the current measures being implemented, so there's still reason to hope that the overall trend stays in the downward direction.
Edited to add today's chart. Decent day for WA (+3.9%). Excellent day nationally (+2.5%). Though I'm no sure whether Sunday numbers are as reliable.

58 people in Brisbane were each fined $1334 each after a car rally was held in Brisbane over night.

AFP were embarrassed after some of their recruits decided to have a party on Friday night at their residential campus.

A Victorian man is behind bars in WA. He arrived in Perth and was placed in the mandatory self-isolation in a hotel. Alleged he wedged open an exit door at the hotel to bypass security on a number of occasions and used public transport to get around the city. He's been refused bail as he's seen likely to reoffend if they put him back in the hotel.

Apparently normal flu cases in WA are the lowest they have been for 5 years at this time of the year and people fronting up to ED with gastro are down 50%. It is possible that less people will die this year from flu/corona than the flu in a normal year. Social distancing and staying/eating at home is having a positive effect on our health.
The worlds a funny place.

Hopefully more and more of us will see the value in an annual flu shot.
