Is the Eagles Melbourne game going ahead or what?

I KNEW we would get screwed over playing Sunday afternoon. KNEW IT
Yes it’s going ahead

There absolutely are, that’s fair.

Purely from a football perspective, this is a marvellous fu** up the likes of which will be hard to repeat. Egotistical, chasing dollars and no regard for the integrity of the season.

From a world perspective, who gives a s**t about football, which is the exact reason they didn’t even need to embark on this.

Chasing dollars or trying to minimise the impact to the AFL and community that relies on it not to mention player payments and future viability of the league itself.

Maybe have a bit of a chill mate.

They followed medical and political advice. If they hadn't closed the borders the season would still continue.

Apparently there's risk of some AFL clubs going under. It's true that heaps of clubs haven't turned an operating profit for years and have no cash. In fact, a lot of clubs seem to rely on AFL handouts to survive.

Lets not forget it was first the Eagles then the Crows that saved the terminal VFL comp into forming the AFL.

With the millions of dollars and resources wasted on Giants and the Suns, maybe this is the perfect opportunity to form a competition that is fair and equitable for all Clubs.

Reducing the number of Victorian clubs and eliminating the Suns and Giants would be enough to save the remainder of the Clubs.

GOOD, let them go broke.

Too many teams and stop the Gestapo equalization crap.
I don't get this norrow-minded thoughtless opinion. Sure there are too many clubs in one state but these clubs have been in the competition for many decades. If one or more disappear the whole competition will be so much poorer for it.

Are those infected more likely to do what they are told?
Peer pressure is king in Japan. "Corona harassment" has become a thing in terms of people telling others on the trains off for coughing incorrectly (based on governmemt instructions). If people were told to stay inside (which officals haven't done so far) then most people would do it due to social pressure.

The official advice is wash your hands and cough correctly. "Social distancing", which is being preached hard by Australia authorities, hasn't become a thing here yet.

id be extremely happy if a fairer competition was born out of this crisis. The non-victorian teams (excluding the expansions) are screwed over constantly and taken for granted given their contribution to the AFL.

Apologies if I have struck a raw nerve.

Not the day to say something like this on an emotional day like today.

Time for that later and my humble apologies. I'll tone it down today.

Cheers

Proof is in the pudding Japan's numbers are putting the rest of the Western World to shame. Must be doing something right.

Japan shut down schools weeks ago.

The country also has a far stronger culture of enacting and actively practicing government initiatives.

They also have outbreak response and containment infrastructure that is far superior to most OECD countries as a consequence of the SARS outbreak in 2003.

The US is on course to have more cases than any other country by Easter.

Europe, having acted belatedly, is now under lockdown of people movement - their curves will begin to flatten over the next two weeks.

China has already contained its outbreak, they are the proof that isolation measures are what is effective against this virus - the numbers in Hubei would have been over 9 million by now without the shutdown that was conducted.

The US however has done little apart from where county sherrifs or state governors have decided to take action themselves independently.

The overwhelming majority of people in that country are yet to undertake the extent of isolation that is required to contain COVID-19.

The largest economy on the planet is going to be offline for a significant amount of time, which will cause the greatest financial disruption globally since WWII.

Considering the inaction, lack of responsibility and pedalling of misinformation that has come from the current White House administration in regard to this pandemic, Trump should rightly be criticised for how it has been (mis)handled to date.

Of course they will have more total the USA has 300 million people. But infection % will be similiar.

China is blatently lying about its numbers.

Can play around with the numbers yourself. Compare the USA to Europe.

They have $120mil sitting there in relief funds, for cases just like this. The AFL crying poor is, for lack of a better word, rich.

All sports in the world cancelled. Australian sports cancelled despite the same political and medical advice.

This closure was the most predictable thing on earth, and was a needless disruption to the integrity of the season.

There are far more important things than football right now, but that’s no excuse to just drop the bundle and not even try to navigate this intelligently.

Generally yes, however their containment infrastructure didn't and still hasn't worked out so well at Fukashima...contaminated the Pacific Ocean and half the world.

Yes Collingwood would have to travel more and Richmond will have less games at the MCG .
Victoria will be so much poorer for it .

Impossible . Eddie Mcguire wont let it happen .

Before this round of matches the AFL had already committed to a 17 round season KNOWING that a shutdown was inevitable

So playing this weekend will make no difference to eventual revenue once the season recommences. If it doesn’t restart and is written off then they’re ****ed anyway as one rounds worth of revenue ain’t going to mean s**t

They thought they’d be able to get a few rounds in before the shutdown came when all evidence suggested that was unlikely. What has happened was entirely predictable

The smart thing to do would have been to postpone the season before it started

Don’t know if that’s true though. Those teams and the comp were already f*cked before Adelaide and us came along and propped them back up. Everything the AFL have done since then in terms of expansion has made the competiton worse by continually draining the talent pool too quickly while still having to support other clubs and pour money into the new ones. Maybe if we lost that many teams at once it could really affect it in a bad way but we’ve always been 2-4 teams too heavy imo (especially since GC and GWS).
