New York City area sees 28% of all tests coming back positive Peter Spiegel reports from New York New York City, which has overtaken Seattle as the biggest coronavirus hotspot in the US, has seen 28 per cent of its tests coming back positive, suggesting the virus has been circulating in America's largest city for weeks. Deborah Birx, the co-ordinator of the White House's coronavirus task force, said the 28 per cent rate for the New York City area far outstrips the national average of less than 8 per cent.

AHPPC does not support full community lockdown at this time
Many countries have taken a total lockdown approach after having cases numbering in the thousands, and a growing number of deaths. Total lockdown is seen as the most dramatic way to limit spread. It entails citizens (other than essential service workers) staying a home, only going out for supplies or for medical attention. The aim is to reduce transmission to below R0=1 and stop the growth in cases in the short-term.

It is not clear what the strategy for paring back of restrictions should be. Proponents talk about relaxing these measures when control is achieved, by keeping the borders closed for over 12 months until a vaccine is developed. Other proponents have a narrative that a 4-6 week total lock down would enable greater focus on case detection and isolation, contact tracing and quarantine, and to consolidate preparedness of the health system.

The social disruption of this option is extreme and good compliance has generally required strong law enforcement/military presence. The public messaging of this would be challenging and need to ensure that it does not give false hope that any subsequent epidemic will either not occur or be materially modified as the long term effect of this intervention is unknown.

Not even close, according to this:

Previous research, including by Klein, has revealed that men have lower innate antiviral immune responses to a range of infections including hepatitis C and HIV. Studies in mice suggest that this may also be true for coronaviruses, though Covid-19 specifically has not been studied.

“Their immune system may not initiate an appropriate response when it initially sees the virus,” Klein said.

That is actually pretty close.

It's a good recommendation, in my eyes, and it would be nice if those that make the decisions would convey this message.
Important to note, however, is that the same statement supports where we are now, which indicates our politicians are listening.

Do you mean it’s a good recommendation to go into full lockdown or it’s good that they’ve recommended against it?

They already have more cases and more deaths then Australia.

Yeah it’s seems every county is just focusing on getting their own backyard sorted. No one cares about Brexit anymore that’s for sure.

Big story in the UK about how they are missing out on stuff to be able to respond because of ... Brexit.
