Politics is the key to this.

We avoided an AIDS crisis in Australia in the 80s (and forever more) because the Hawke government was politically courageous and did what the scientists recommended.

Other places were politically weak, or malevolent, and suffered accordingly.

AFL legit kidding themselves thinking the season will go on with or without crowds. I will be staggered if we get through round 1 without a positive test by a club employee or player which will shut down the comp.

Stopped in at Aldi on the way home earlier, it was pretty weird seeing so many empty shelves. Looked a bit like a scene from a zombie film where the survivors break into a supermarket to scavenge any food that’s left.

Ain't late stage neoliberal capitalism grand.

Get over yourself, dude.

When this all blows over in a few months I hope you have the humility to look yourself in the eye and admit that you played your part in the hysteria.

This 'late stage capitalism' watch the decline nonsense if for angsty uni students and underdeveloped miscreants still mad at their parents.

Forgive me for my naivety but I'm in a faraway place known as 'Asia'.

Here, in this megacity they call Kuala Lumpur, things are normal. No panic-buying or fearmongering to be seen.

The train stations (well, at least one of them, anyway) has a small static ad on a platform with basic guidelines for health precautions.

And lots of people are wearing masks, as Asians seem to like to do.

Beyond that, it is peace and quiet.

This leads me to wonder, how much of the fearpr0n and general anxiety seen among certain posters in this thread is media driven?

Social media and legacy media, I mean.

Also I wonder if some people, deep down, kinda want the world to end.

Or at least the enjoy the chaos, the excitement of an unknown future. So this latest super virus story is something they want to keep getting bigger.

Just my 2c. As I said, I'm a long way away from home, nowhere near the TV programming, so perhaps I am just naive and stuff.

Media is definitely milking it for all it's worth.

People shouldn't panic, but if someone shouts fire in a crowded theatre, panic will ensure. Morrison is just a wishy washy leader, he looks and acts like just some regular jo with no leadership skills you could pull out of any pub and due to circumstances, thrust into the role of prime minister. It just isn't a reflection on how bad a leader he is, but the sorry state of politics generally speaking that across the globe we have such a shortage of leadership that there are plonkers on both sides and the public has to try and pick the least worst.

There is no need to panic buy food. We produce enough food here to feed more than 100m people, we have a population of 25m. We export the vast majority of it, we import nothing that is a requirement for survival. Sure, your deli might not have greek Fetta in the coming months, just buy some Australian cheese instead. We produce all of our toilet paper locally. The only thing we are reliant on for overseas is some medicines, particular those that might help in treating pandemics, however, our socialist health system stockpiles these medicines in case of pandemics and will distribute them to the states if there are shortages.

From what we have learned from China and Italy, this has a fairly high mortality rate in older people, it also has a high mortality rate with people with significant health issues, including diabetes. We are seeing much higher fatality rates in Italy than we did in China, they have a much older population than China. Italy has the 5th highest median age in the world at 45.5, China is 67th at 37.4. Australia is 58th at 38.7 years of age.

China has approximately 9.2% of it's population with type 1 or type 2 diabetes between the age of 20 and 79. Italy has 5.0%, Australia 5.6%. America is 10.8%, the worst nations are in the 15-20%, most are middle eastern or muslim nations, not sure if it is something to do with diet. Malaysia has 16.7%, but has a very low median age of 28.5 so it may dodge the bullet given younger people's immune system fight it off much better. It is hard to tell how critical a role overall health and diet will play.

Italy went downhill very fast, I think age is the primary factor though. I think if China didn't implement draconian methods to slow the spread they could have had a massive number of deaths due to the size of their population. Western government can't weld people into apartment complexes like they did in China, one of the cons of not being in an authoritarian government that has some value on the treatment of people.

While I don't think we need to panic, we need to be cautious because it has the potential to kill vulnerable people. The advice I have given to my parents and family who are 70+ is to not go out or socialise for the time being. There is a company in Canada that believes it has the cure but the best case scenario is for vaccines to hit November assuming they don't run into any hiccups when they go through the human testing trials.

Lol.

We're a few months from a negative price on money and apparently capitalism is alive and well.

Could get into politics and change it, that's how it happens you know.

It has been lots worse than this before you know

Yes you’re correct but my quasi mesh of communism/ capitalism wouldn’t fly. That’s enough for you Gina you fat campaigner !
It may have been a lot worse but In today’s society we have access to far to much information.

Could maybe find you a shack round here with that attitude.

Ha yeah have thought about doing something like that. I’m not tied to anything currently, dare to dream aye

It's not blowing over till it takes thousands of us with it, maybe some members of this board (not necessarily the great old ones either, anyone can be unlucky with this) tho I sure hope not.

the behavioral traits people are showing in the aisles of the supermarkets are very similar to the type of traits that effect the way the stockmarket moves.

Shut up and listen and you might learn something.

I covered the collapse of RBS and HBOS up close in 2008. I realise you were at home pulling your pud, so you don't understand what I'm talking about.

Will this last forever? No.

Will it "blow over" in a few months? No.

Only a cretin would think that.

He won't be able to comprehend that, he's one of those "why doesn't the government just print more pineapples?????????????????????" types.

People act like politics is some mysterious force.

It is literally people who turn up to enough meetings gaining enormous power.

Yep.

I'm a small business owner with a degree in economics from a very conservative institution. A long way from a caramel latte sipping hipster in Fitzroy.

The idea that the system is broken isn't left v.s. right, it's those paying attention v.s. those not.

If it doesn’t work, no doubt Johnson will blame the NHS and try to abolish it.

Nah, they know that is the only thing that could cost them power.

What was it that noted revolutionary Marxist first year uni student Warren Buffet said: "There is a class war under way, and my side is winning it"?

The UKs strategy actually has a lot of merit.

I guess the main risk is how successfully they can isolate the elderly.

The problem is not isolating the elderly, but how long you have to isolate for. You can get someone to stay at home for a few weeks, maybe a month, what happens in 6+ months?

Not everyone is going to contract it at the same time.

I think they are playing a dangerous game, because having a large number of infections at once will overload the health system, even though younger people have a low fatality rate, something like 10% still need hospitalisation. I wouldn't be comfortable making that call given there is a prospective cure later in the year, no country I am aware of is capable of providing intensive care to 10% of it's population over a short period of time.

It will be shit for a while, especially on weekends. Trucks usually come in during the night and the major re-stocking occurs after 3am so going early morning before work on a weekday will probably yield best results.

Our biggest problem is going to be the supply chain rather than running out of product, we only have so many trucks and containers, even if you were to double or triple output, we wouldn't have the means to move that much stock in a short period of time, it is not like we have a dormant supply of trucks and containers able to move double or triple our normal quantity of goods over a sustained period of time.

What does any of that have to do with the price of fish, pal?

Reality is that this is Swine Flu 3.0 and the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

So stop peddling fear like a giddy teenager at his first house party where the cops rock up due to a noise complaint.

Everything is going to be okay :)

Stuff “the” Coronavirus. I’m still after 40+ mature women and BigFooty is aiding me in my wants. :stern look

Jesus Zondor, what a (ahem) “interesting” taste in women...

Ahhhh, we were talking about late stage capitalism and its vulnerablities.

The collapse of the entire Western global banking system is kind of ... that.
