I noticed “Lorne” was trending on Twitter last night. It started on the back of reports that Alexander Downer was holidaying there with his family.

Anyway, with my folks having a holiday house down there (which my brother and his family are self isolating in for weeks) I thought I’d skim through the comments.

Beyond the politically motivated ones the locals down there made it very clear they don’t want anyone from the big smoke coming down and increasing the risk to their families.

They were calling for all locals to find the holiday homes they knew were usually vacant, apart from the odd weekend or holiday period, and to take pics of the Audi/Range Rover/ Porsche SUV’s in the driveways and include the rego plates to out them to the cops.

They were livid.

I guess that’s where it stems from ferbs.

............and THAT'S "why not"!

I don't want people round here either to be honest. I get what the locals in those places are thinking, but look at myself as being paranoid and selfish.

After all a good chunk of our economy is dependent on terrorists (as we always referred to them before 9/11).

If I lived in the city and had a place out of town I'd have been there weeks ago, before all this distancing started. One of the reasons I moved here decades ago, last century, was to ride out an inevitable pandemic.

I have to drive into town now to get pump fuel. Wonder if I'll get pulled over and hassled by cops.

They will be able to tell based on water/electricity usage. They just need someone with loose lips in those service providers.
They can access the info anyway, don't need and informant.

There are always going to be some that would miss out.

Love or hate Scomo he's knocked it out of park with the package the government has put together.

It's pretty much the best in the world.
Our workforce has heaps of casuals. Its a consequence of the last 25 years of government. Heaps of people who need that support will feel it. I guess most will have registered at Centre link by now tho.

Doesn’t take much. At least they found the source.
Its not the war of our generation. There is a thirty something bloke up the road missing an arm from Iraq or Afghanistan. I didn't ask him how it happened.

Heaps of casuals are going to get a guaranteed $1500 per fortnight which will be a pay increase for them. Who cares if they don’t get paid super for 6 months?
Heaps of other casuals will not. I think you overestimate how many casuals can stay in the same job for a minimum 12 months, and how many are foreign nationals.
Also the 1500 must be taxed, 680 a week or so isn't heaps.
Come to think of it I don't know any casuals who are eligible to get it out of the 4 kitchens I've spent time working in for the last 18 months.. only management staff (head chefs, venue managers etc) meet the criteria. So maybe I'll be generous and say 50% of the staff ive worked with recently will get these payments.. and the ones who do get it need it the least.

The casuals who aren’t entitled to it will get job seeker which is twice as much as it’s ever been thanks to the $550 per fortnight bonus. Combine that with the fact that there are less places to spend money on and some people don’t have to pay rent or are paying cheaper rent then it’s actually the best time ever to be unemployed from a pure financial point of view.

Hassled possibly. Fined, doubtful. Fuel is essential.

As for Lorne et al the mayor of the Surf Coast was on the telly this morning saying coastal communities have a proliferation of elderly residents combined with a shortage of ICU facilities, pleading with city folk to stay away for their sake.

I'm not sure you have your finger on the pulse with this one, do you know of any renters who are able to not pay rent or are getting a reduced rate?
The current process for renters is to get a temporary reduction which much be paid back once the lockdown is over. Not exactly favouring the renter.

Also remember all those foreign nationals? Kiwis, Nepalese, etc who come here and work in kitchens cos Aussies can't hack it?
Yeah they still can't get job seeker.
Same for a lot of industries.
Possibly the best time to be unemployed yes, but is there ever a "good" time to be unemployed at all?

Lots of casuals are older and have partners who earn above the threshold for job seeker so they get neither. They fall through aswell.

Yes I was in that subcategory until my partners shifts got reduced to 2 days a week.
Fortunately work finds those looking and I'm packing meat at a butchers now. Interesting experience.
