I'm honestly grappling with the whole concept. I want to help my country beat this thing, but I feel individually uncomfortable given what I know about intelligence agencies (A Post-Graduate Certificate in Intelligence from Macquarie University) and the ASD's history.

How far away technically are Australian authorities from being able to do something like this anyway?

I would be a lot more confident if I knew how the program would be structured, who was responsible for oversight, whether the app permeated into other data areas and which organisations would have access to the information. i.e. Police to ONI. The volunteer basis is a good first step, but any involvement by the ASD is a concern.

Difficult to 100% say due to the secrecy of it all, but we have been acquiring high grade American signals technology for decades, as well as spyware like Pegasus. We’ve also been fiddling with satellite and over the horizon radar (can pick up signals) since the 1970s. In addition, the ASD already has the power to investigate citizens via helping the police with investigations. Therefore, my guess is not too far off, but there are a some checks in place to ensure the intelligence agencies don’t wander too far off the path.

Sorry mate, I meant some of the newer stuff we were able to ‘acquire’ from the USA since the Howard era. It was around the same time we started investing heavily in C2ISR, RMA and cyber security. Pegasus is just one element of spyware and is a part of a much wider intelligence apparatus.

I think in the future we are going to one way or another lose much of our civil rights (or perceived civil rights as our constitution is ****ing useless in granting them), such as privacy rights, etc. While the libertarian side of me thinks hell no, a lot of the issues stems from a lack of safeguards for human rights, distrust of government and what information can be used for.

In the general sense, none of us are of any real interest to our government, while we know the government spies on people all the time, they pretty much scan private information for anyone planning nefarious activities. The USA despite their extensive surveillance regime pulled the guy over who broke into the white house two months prior, who's car was filled with guns and ammo and a map which had the white house marked on it and none of their many arms of intelligence agencies spied on him, he was let go and he returned to the white house with 800 rounds of ammo in his vehicle. You would think that this person would be someone worth spying on, but they didn't.

I hate to break it to people, unless you are doing something nefarious, you aren't much interest to anyone in intelligence agencies or the government. People on this forum would give zero ****s about anyone here if they followed a different team. You just aren't that interesting and your paranoia doesn't make it more so. If I could be tracked 24/7 I would tick that option because I am boring as batshit and them knowing where I was would eliminate being falsely implicated in something I didn't do. It would give me confidence that in the middle of a pandemic i can go to the shop because I knew there weren't a bunch of selfish campaigners like the dickhead who now has a criminal record for breaching quarantine to shag his girlfriend, like he couldn't whack off in a 5 star hotel for 2 weeks. Imbeciles like that need to be tracked. :stern look

If there weren't stupid people on the planet, we wouldn't need to do dumb shit like this but we are bogged down by the yoke of low IQ morons.

Not that strange when you examine the history and inner workings of the Australian-US alliance. The USA control the software patches, source codes and systems integration. We perform the role that is assigned to us and we thank Washington for the pleasure.

The only way a herd immunity could work is if we strictly quarantined the elderly and vulnerable. That way the rest of us gain our immunity over a time and then their quarantine is over.

No, I am not confident any of those things are in place. The first I heard that it was being considered was this morning and the discussion indicated it was going to be optional. If that was the case even with all those safeguards I wouldn't bother because it wouldn't be fit for purpose. If you want to use it as a public health tool to fight the potential outbreaks of Covid19 it has to be whole of the population in my opinion.
We may not like the way they do this kind of thing in China but we can't deny the effectiveness with which they have deployed it.

We've been more effective at stopping this IMO. (So far, that could change.)

We can't trust any figures that come out of China. So we don't know if they have been more effective or not. What we do know is they have ongoing cases and spread the virus throughout the world.
