We punch way above our weight in the field of tech too..

We come from the luckiest country on earth and I think everyone’s about to see it.
Definitely mate.

Mine is more of a complaint that we should be investing more in national R&D.

The historical funding levels have largely been atrocious, with the exception of a few areas like medical research, which always need more support and funding.

Oh absolutely, as it creates industry.

I also think need better support of start ups and easier access to private funding. the crazy thing is it’s easier to get a million dollar loan for a home these days, then it is to get a $100,000 for a business.

As always, ours are punching above our weight. Our medical research fields are much better than our technology development fields.
Melbourne researchers, among the best.

Yet who would even know their names, much less have their poster up on a wall?

The men and women in the white lab coats are the true superheroes of the human race.

It's funny because we place so much faith in them.

Like most emergency workers, they are the best of us.

My car (Toyota) due for service today, has been booked in for a fortnight, receive SMS this morning, Account MUST be payed by eftpos, credit card etc, NO CASH accepted due to COVID 19 protocols in place. fmd.
Is it even worth servicing your old Corolla?

Hopefully the government is looking at ways of funding rapid re configuring of what remains of the high tech manufacturing sector into making ventilators etc or incentivize some of these companies to rapidly reconfigure to make parts for the supply chain of these machines.

It's akin to war time protocols of making bullets and tanks.

If the Second World War is any guide, it would require a major mobilisation of the economy.

War is ultimately an external attack upon a ruling class.

Viral infections don't threaten this dynamic. The rich will have all the ventilators and medical treatment they require, so there is no underlying motivation for mass mobilisation with regard to this issue.

When the cure for cancer is found, Melbourne researchers will have played a key role.

John Brumby can take some credit too.

Nope.

There's not some sort of super supply sitting in the private sector either.

And the Libs have cut it further.

The savage irony being that it was Australian researchers that developed Relenza.

Which is a catch 22 of a health emergency like this vs a war.

Given that most of the manufacturing sector will be locked in doors and unable to work.

Paid for something yesterday on card, handed it over only to be refused. They wouldn't touch it. I went to take the terminal off the desk and was told not to. I couldn't touch it. But I was allowed to tap in my PIN. Go figure.

Also, the odd thing about this virus is how much it has affected the ruling elite so quickly - significant infection of major politicians and world leaders and their families already.

Comes down to airports and plane travel, people who in and out of them all the time spreading it.

Doesn’t really matter if you’ve got airforce one, if all the secretaries are flying coach.

Govt is going to try and sell $500m of gilts tomorrow.

That will be very very interesting.

And sense they are above it all, not like the common people etc.

White males will be blamed shortly. I've already started pointing and shouting at the mirror so I'm ready to face societies vitriol for the 100th time in in 15 months.

Actually, your type are blaming China and starting that fight again in an effort to distract attwention from the awful response of conservative politicians in the West - Trump, Morrison, Johnson.
