Catholic masses in Sydney will be limited to only 100 people, in advice from Archbishop Anthony Fisher.

A pastoral letter issues today says that the Sydney Archdiocese will be following the federal government’s ban on indoor gatherings larger than 100 people.

“Priests have been granted permission to temporarily increase the number of masses and celebrate multiple Sunday masses as necessary to accommodate these changes,” the church said.

“In cases where public masses have to be suspended, a dispensation from attending mass is granted and Catholics will be able to fulfil their Sunday mass obligation by setting aside some time for prayer at home, reading the scriptures of the day and watching mass on television or online.”

Fisher also said that sick parishioners should not attend mass.

They should just stream mass on twitch and pass the collection plate for bits and prime subs

Canada seems to be doing well:

Trump closes US-Canada border.

US President Donald Trump has closed the US-Canada border to try and stop the spread of coronavirus.
“We will be, by mutual consent, temporarily closing our Northern Border with Canada to non-essential traffic. Trade will not be affected. Details to follow!” he Tweeted.
The move had been flagged earlier in the week but the bombshell decision via Twitter came after Mr Trump defended his administration’s reaction to the virus which has killed more than 100 and infected 65000 in the US.
In Canada there are 500 cases with eight deaths.

Boris about to close UK schools. Seem like the herd immunity thing isn't working. A text from a UK GP sent to Dr Norman Swan of the ABC, under the promise of anonymity, suggests that their hospital system is heading towards breakdown, with staff succumbing in huge numbers. They do not have the proper protective equipment, apparently using only masks and surgical gloves.

In fairness to Boris, he has received and followed the advice from their Chief Medical Officer, Sir Someone Or Other, who it would seem, perfectly fits the position of a buffoon. Well done Sir.

He took medical advice after first listening to frankly disturbed quasi-scientific rambling of his Chief Advisor Dominic Cummings, who is basically Snake in another body.

Surely our games in Tassie will now be played here, following the Tasmanian Government declaring a state of emergency and restricting travel to and from other States to only essential services.

I was under the impression that domestic air travel is moving towards essential travel only.

I'm way out of my depth on these matters but in a global economy how much can Australia actually do to wether such a collapse?
I know we came out of 08 relatively well but the economic map is pretty different now, no?
In 08 Australia was in the middle of a boom from the construction of massive mining projects and China was in the middle of a construction boom which, along with some solid policy from Keating and Costello had us in a decent position to weather the storm. We didn't drop into recession. I don't think we can avoid it this time. It is possible that the March quarter still stays slightly in the positive but I would expect both the June and September quarters to be hit pretty hard. I would say best case would be that stimulus and recovery start kicking in late in the September quarter.

If we really want to pay for all the inevitable industry bail outs, help for small business and casuals and broader stimulus packages, we'd nationalise the resource industries and stop all that income going overseas, to Twiggy and Gina. Obviously that won't happen but if we're actually smart we'll amend the tax system soon so that when China recovers we actually make an appropriate return on our resources for once as a nation. That and make sure Google etc pay some tax too.

1200 dead in Italy in 3 days. Still clinging to your delusion?

WTF would you know about viral epidemiology and dispersion?

You're just another ***ing "tabloid expert" clinging to whatever reinforces your psychological & political preferences.
