my point is while they’re busy ‘doing the right thing’ (for a change) they will use the covid19 crisis to indulge in malfeasance that they would otherwise be scrutinised for eg: vic govt has opened up coal seam gas exploration and continues to log the last vestiges of native forest, the sportsrort will slip from view, the bushfires response? No one will care. Hopefully after this is all done some journalist willdo a stocktake of all the shit things govts did while they were throwing money at us. I suspect however it ends up the world as we know it will be altered irrevocably.

Blame the state government’s and councils for the screwups with the cruise ship, casino and Bondi. They are the ones responsible over controlling those facets.

The schools and public transport remaining open is based on advice of Australia’s best medical minds. I don’t agree with it, but I’m not an expert either.

No they didn't. They removed the moratorium on conventional onshore gas. They actually enshrined a ban on coal seam gas in the state's constitution.

They removed the moratorium so they can access Commonwealth billions to build the transmission infrastructure required to ramp up renewables massively.

You would think so, but state governments are largely responsible for implementing the port controls outside immigration, which included implementing the federal ban. NSW Health was responsible for implementing controls for the cruise ship, not federal immigration services.


State and territory governments have responsibility for land use planning and controls, including for ports, their adjacent land areas and connecting transport systems. Local government also makes decisions that affect ports, including on matters such as planning requirements and local road access. State or territory governments have historically owned port authorities; however there is a trend toward privatising these assets on a long-term lease basis.

Yes, the federals decide on special exemptions under certain strict conditions and control immigration. The state port authorities enforce the health, disembarking and transportation controls as they are state ports, not federal. There is an overlap. In this case, it was up NSW to do testing before doing the immigration and on-land border stuff.

The differences lay in different laws and responsibilities for airports and ports. It’s quite a jumble and can be quite confusing.
