Little perturbed that we havnt stopped flights from china.

this virus is insidious as the infectiousness is very high much higher than sars and unlike sars can be spread in the incubation phase(1-14 days) when you are showing no signs of being sick.

The death rate is looking around 3%

the function of an outbreak like the spanish flu that killed 50-100 million people - is the infectiousness intercoupled with the death rate.

if x amount of people catch a normal flu - and 3% die - with a highly infectious virus its much more likely to kill a large number of people as a much higher percentage of the world catch it.

I believe the government should have shut down flights from china a week ago.

Stay safe out there folk.

We wont stop flights because of money and for fear of being called racist.
I wonder how long before more Chinese start demanding visa extensions cause of the virus amd get it granted even though the risk supposedly wont be high enough to stop flights.

Interestingly Perth WA crayfish industry has shut down last couple of days........ as we mostly export to China and it has stopped.

Have a dreadful feeling this is going to escalate

Least locals might get First grade Crays at a reasonable price

Its the beginning of the new season so they will offload whatever they have and park up till its over - they still have 11 months to make quota - missing chinese new year will hurt the overall year takings but id imagine.

The government is assuming that it doesn’t spread in incubation (Just like SARS which is also coronavirus). SARS had 10% case mortality vs 3-4% for Wuhan coronavirus.
I am seeing some articles saying China claims it is infectious in incubation (which to me would green light flight closures if China has officially said this)

I’m not aware of any success in making vaccines for other coronavirus and it will be at best months away

Is coronavirus especially problematic in this regard?

One of the parts which is concerning is that it appears nobody fully knows what we are dealing with and the inconsistencies in information.

An example China says that it is contagious during the incubation period, while the Australian health department is saying that it isn't.

I'm also sceptical about information coming from China. They are not really known to be open with information. I personally think that there are more infected and maybe even deaths than has been reported.

Yeah I’ve been trying to find the quote from the Chinese health minister - specifically wanted to know if he was misquoted or bad translation (the Al Jazeera one seemed not great translation and didn’t specifically translate any statement about contagion during incubation)
There are more infected than reported (probably mild cases) but it didn’t help that initially local Wuhan media were threatened and suppressed.

I’m not sure of the details; just know that neither SARS nor MERS got vaccines. Both of them coronavirus.

There's various reports that companies and agencies bare confident of formulating a vaccine.

Scientists have confirmed exactly where the epicentre of the deadly coronavirus outbreak which has infected more than 2700 people and killed at least 81, began in Wuhan, China.
Experts from the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said tests confirmed the virus first jumped from animals to humans inside the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in the heart of city, according to China’s state-owned Xinhua news agency.
The “wet” market which includes live animals for sale had been reported as the source of the outbreak, however samples now confirm that is the case after testing was carried out.
“Thirty-one of the 33 positive samples were collected from the western zone of the market, where booths of wildlife trading concentrated,” the CDC said.
“The result suggests that the novel coronavirus outbreak is highly relevant to the trading of the wild animals,” experts said.
Wildlife sold at the market for human consumption included wolf cubs, civet cats, bats, dogs, pigs, snakes, chickens, donkeys, badgers, bamboo rats, hedgehogs and deer. Wet markets place people and live and dead animals in close contact, making it easy for a virus to jump species.

There are rising fears the spread of the lethal coronavirus could damage global markets – and it’s already about to have an impact Down Under.
Aussie shares are set to tumble today as a direct result of global concern about the virus’s spread, with US markets shedding more than 1 per cent already.
Overnight the Australian dollar also took a hit, buying 67.57 US cents at 7am this morning, down from 68.46 US cents at the market close on Friday before the Australia Day long weekend.
Market analysts are expecting local shares to fall once trading begins this morning, with the SPI200 futures contract down 76 points, or 1.09 per cent, at 6926 today.

If we follow the science on this issue maybe there are some other things we could also re examine.

Scott Morrison's father created the virus?

They are giving HIV drugs a run to try and combat the virus.

Should the unthinkable happen, and the virus spreads to suburbia, it will test the mettle of many a straight white male with a Scarface poster in the garage.

Fronting a grumpy looking pharmacist with a prescription for HIV medication will be a tough sell.

"Taken this medication before George? Coronavirus you say? Mhmm."

Is the there ANY reason they just can't cultivate it, chop it up, then inject the stuff in order to facilitate typical CD4+/B cell responses?

Am I missing something about this particular virus?

We're ****ed if this thing has HIV level sophistication.

I believe the relevant viral proteins exhibit a similar mode of action, suggesting the viral induced membrane fusion step can be adopted from HIV to CoV.

20 year old research.

This is a typical viral infection pathway.

Can I ask that those who are fearing they have the virus really really think before coming to hospital?
As yet all we have is supportive care; which means placing you in isolation and waiting until you get better (with oxygen/ IV fluid/ analgesia)
Which means that if you can breathe, walk, eat and drink you are unlikely to benefit from being in hospital with it. All you are doing is risking infecting other patients and staff.

And for those who call up wanting to get a clearance to get back to work because they have been to China in the last 14 days and they now have a cold - don't bother asking. We cannot give medical clearances from the hospital. Calls like this will only make us more irritated and upset and distract us from real work.
