Preprint means that it has been early released given current coronavirus emergency before peer review process. Major weakness is it only had one Asian patient out of 8 samples so statistically could be random chance.

Agree. I can't find anything regarding the ACE-2 and lung expression relating to "Asians", but there are certain polymorphism factors related to particular Asian populations (Han Chinese)

Wondering what people think of the current travel restrictions. The WHO has asked countries not to impose travel bans because research says they don't work to contain outbreaks. Some countries (like Canada) have followed this advice, whereas others like Australia have not. The ABC is reporting that the perception in China is that the travel bans are mostly racism.

Do people think that the bans are justified, or has the government overreacted?

I haven't read much about the stance of the ALP and Greens on the issue - have they commented?

Travel bans are justified and the premise that they are racist is ridiculous.

The yes travel restriction case makes sense imo because delaying its spread can help other countries prepare a management approach, even allow medical reseach to come up with a cure. Here's the travel restrictions case;

"In defending the U.S. travel restrictions, Nancy Messonnier, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said there are already thousands of cases of a virus for which the population does not have immunity.

“We made an aggressive decision in front of an unprecedented threat that action now had the biggest potential to slow this thing down,” she said. "That’s what the theory is here.

vs the flimsy (imo) no restrictions case;

"Research from past outbreaks has found that travel restrictions can delay, but not stop, the arrival and spread of a new pathogen. Travel bans can also have devastating effects on the economies of countries struggling to contain epidemics, which could make other governments think twice about immediately disclosing mysterious new outbreaks in the future.

"Travel bans typically don’t work because if people want to travel, they find a way to do s
o"

Can delay definitely means something to potentially gain.

WHO is a useless, corrupt organisation.
I just saw that WHO is a subsidiary of the united nations which puts their main concern into context, that being the economic affect of a travel ban on a country at the epicenter of an outbreak. Its just coincidence that these outbreaks always seem to derive from third world countries and the united nation is a socialist organisation overrepresented by such countries.

The bans are more than justified, if anything far too late.

ALP just playing it smart, waiitng for the people sent to XMAS island to get all the clear while cases spread in Australia and then they will attack.

Far too late for any travel bans to be effective now.

So the self quarantining is working well. We have 2 confirmed cases here in SA. I believe it's an elderly couple around 60 ish that flew in from China, they apparently are self quarantined at there place of residence. Of course part of there self quarantining is to attend a few opens and Auctions as well....

Going bloody great now.

SA heath are resorting to checking there phones to see where they have actually gone.

So forget about the travel bans, we have people with confirmed cases just going around everywhere at the moment.

That's happening everywhere

In China data monitoring phone gps has shown a huge spike of people traveling into Guizhou province. Thats curious because Guizhou is one of the lesser effected provinces, and people are heading there to be safe.

We will start seeing a lot of this type of movement as pockets of virus activity start flaring up

Yeah more info is coming out that apparently this pair were out and about for 2 days before quarantining.

Imagine calling people racist because they won't let you in because you're country is spreading disease. Just wow. A student lied and got in by lying he was from Hong Kong and not China. Imagine feeling that entitled? I hope Dutton strips him of any visa

Modern catch phrases (updated):

1. The cheque is in the maill, or alternatively, I did transfer that money but my online bank is notoriously slow

2. I won't **** in your mouth

3. I will self quarantine for 14 days, and not leave the house

Hopefully, the police will show some backbone and charge them.with this.

The Elements: Reckless Conduct Endangering Life
1. The accused engaged in conduct;
2. The accused's conduct was voluntary;
3. The accused's conduct endangered another person's life;
4. The accused acted recklessly; and
5. The accused acted without lawful authority or excuse.

The test here is whether a reasonable person in the same shoes of the accused would have realised that his or her conduct placed, or may have placed, another person in danger of death. The prosecution need not prove that a person was actually in danger but, that the accused's conduct had the potential to place a person in danger of death.

The head of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom, is from Ethiopia. Ethiopia is currently in negotiations with China in regards to debt restructuring. There is no way that Tedros isn’t compromised when it comes to the coronavirus.

Not often ill agree with ol leb - us shutting down travel hurts us financially more than china - but the fact that this virus is transmissible whilst showing zero symptoms should make it a no brainer.

edit: although the idea that everyones morality is completely pliable because money combined with his posts in the various threads talking about corruption shows a lot of projection.

Really hope (but don't think it will happen) that this forces Australia to realise we have absurd reliance on China. If this sends us into a recession, we really need to work as a country to diversify how we grow as a country, without reliance on one area... but that can happen after Australia is finished with the next season or MAFS or whatever show they care about more.

It makes you realize the terrifying possibility of bio weapons. If the powers that be wanted to de-populate the masses they could do it pretty easily.
