Free kick differential is pointless.

You can screw a team over in the first half by paying free kicks in dangerous positions and situations and breaking the spirit of the other team. Then in the second half, you can even it out by paying some softies on the back pocket where there's no real damage and the team is already 30 points behind.

Umpires are known to even it up in junk time etc

They did it towards the end paying a 'deliberate' against Gold Coast, that wasn't there, in our back end of the ground where it would mean minimal damage and I immediately thought "They're just trying to make the free kick count look more even".

Happened right in front of me as they say. It was the exact scenario that rule was brought in for.

Nope it was brought in to stop this sort of s**t.

Its also these things which annoy the shite out of me and don't often get a look in:

- the free kicks that get missed
- what memo the umps get, and are told to look at in a week. This should be transparent with the clubs and fans
- the disparity of paying free kicks depending where on the ground a player is.
- the precedent set at the beginning of the game, and what interpretation they choose. Some games they choose to pay holding the ball, other games they don't. It suits us if they do. It suits Western Bulldogs and Essendon if they don't.
- How they put the whistle away in finals, yet they over umpire (too many frees) through out some random games in a season.

I looked the stats on FF and FA, just out of curiosity. We have certainly won it in the Showdown, but the count for the season is:

Port: 185-201
W.Lakes: 185-153

North seems to have been the umpires' biggest pet so far: 218-178

PORT Adelaide’s players will regather at Alberton on Friday - and by then the Power might have an answer to their worst free-kick count in an AFL game coached by Ken Hinkley. Port Adelaide conceded 36 free kicks - while beating Gold Coast by 40 points in Shanghai on Saturday. This is the heaviest penalty against the Power since round 16, 2016 when the umpires called against Hinkley’s group 30 times in a 22-point loss to Hawthorn at Adelaide Oval. Hinkley on Saturday labelled the whistle work against Port Adelaide as “significantly against us”. The most were against midfielder Sam Powell-Pepper with seven. The 36 free kicks at Jiangwan Stadium is surpassed in Hinkley’s six years at Alberton only by the 38 conceded in the 10-point loss to North Melbourne in round 6, 2013 in Hobart - a match Hinkley missed with a back complaint leaving the senior coaching role to Alan Richardson.

These are the only three games since Hinkley started at Alberton in which Port Adelaide has conceded 30 or more free kicks. And the extra break - to recover from the long-haul travel to China - might be timely for Hinkley and his coaching staff to get answers from AFL House on why their team has a negative free-kick count this season. Port Adelaide’s basic free-kick counter in nine games this year is 186-201, including the 23-26 (sic it was 36) at Jiangwan Stadium on Saturday. The AFL does not publicly release any more a more-detailed - and more-relevant - indicator of the missed, warranted and correct free kicks in an AFL game........

Rooch is obviously jet lagged. got the 23-36 wrong and only 2 weeks ago in Perth Port gave away 30 frees when it was 13-30 and the genesis of this thread.

Paddy has played 3.5 games this year.

PORT Adelaide lead ruckman Patrick Ryder is being tested by new “blocking” tactics the Power wants clarified by the AFL umpiring department before deciding if it needs to reprogram the All-Australian. Ryder gave away a personal-high six free kicks in Saturday’s Shanghai clash with Gold Coast as Suns ruckman Jarrod Witts worked the new theme of blunting Ryder’s significant leap by blocking his run-up space.

The free-kick count against Ryder - now at telling 4-12 in four AFL games this season - is forcing Port Adelaide to not only ask the AFL umpires what is legal for the opposition in containing Ryder’s leap, but also what is allowed as Ryder responds to these ploys. “We’ll go to the umpires to get some clarification around a few rules,” said Port Adelaide forwards coach Brendon Lade. Lade described Ryder as “frustrated” by the tactics being used to defy his clearance-breaking ruck work. But the 2004 Power premiership ruckman admits he also would seek to block Ryder if he had to deal with the 214-game All-Australian. “If I was rucking against ‘Paddy’, I’d not let him jump either,” Lade said. “But we need some clarification around some rules. “And ‘Paddy’ will have to learn to deal with (those blocking tactics) and get better.”...........

Seriously if you are a useless tree like Witt and you park yourself under the ruck contest you should be fair game for a speccy like tap.

Isn't that what we want to see?

God I hate this game sometimes.

6-7 errors according to this

That’s code for ‘there were 6 or 7 ruck contests where we didn’t pay a free against Port, we’ll have to fix that up for next time’.

The frees against Ryder at the centre bounces were just fabricated.

Some at stoppages as well where he was clearly jumping at the ball and Witts made contact, one time Witts even grabbed him and somehow got a free kick.

The thing with many of these ruck contests is Witts seemed to be blocking Ryder’s run and receiving the free himself. In many cases it was a free to Witts that should have been a free to Ryder.
It’s actually two mistakes not one and a 100m turnaround each time if you take into account the next kick.

No wonder Kem finally had had enough
Annoying thing is this could have had a detrimental effect on our percentage too
Is Rowey making a massive thing of it all week and whingeing, or is it just Port, so just suck it up?

Who cares what cRowe thinks? The umps aren't looking at this because of him.

Would enjoy the scrutiny over Witts v Ryder and then 'interpretation correction' play out in the next installment of Jacobs V Ryder.

We can't sack Ken but I would fire the guy in charge of our forward line Monday morning.

Someone wrote that there were 11 x 50 metres today when the season average is 2 per game.

If those campaigners in the umpiring department come out and say they were all there, then you know they have probably missed at least 600 of them in 90 odd games so far this season.

Matthew Nicholls is only an AFL umpire because he is the best bouncer of the ball. The useless campaigner should have been cut from AFL umpiring when he refused to listen to people tell him the siren had gone down in Tassie in 2005 or 2006 in St Kilda v Freo game, when he refused to consult what was going on and just wanted to bounce the ball as quickly as possible. No bloody common sense to see why the * 18 Freo players were screaming at him. For the AFL to have to reverse a result several days after the game was an indication of his complete incompetence.

And deliberate rushed behind. If those stupid campaigners were full time and not unaccountable swill earning $150k for a part time job, they would actually study this is why the deliberate rushed behind rule was brought in. To stop blatant time wasting and the opportunity to control the ball, not errors under pressure.
