That's weird. Why would god give gays life in the first place only to want them dead? Sounds like a massive plot hole to me.

Perhaps he should've kept that piece of testament to himself. Since he put them here and all he's probably the 7th billion person who's entitled to complain yet alone spruik a final solution towards them.

Hence why its viewed in some circles as a sin/temptation, and a choice which can be discouraged or electrocuted out of you.

As always, God is perfect, the mistakes are ours.

Your weekly dose of common sense

Dear Kwikfix,

It’s amazing what a bit of leadership tension does for intestinal fortitude. After months of obfuscations and prevarication the beleaguered Prime Minister has finally put forward some sensible reforms to the Racial Discrimination Act.

Last year when I introduced my 18C reform bill (against the PMs wishes) - signed by 19 other Senators - addressing the government opposition to the Bill I said:

Next year at some point they’ll probably say ‘this is a good idea’ and true to form they’ll say ‘we always supported it but the timing wasn’t right.’

Yesterday’s announcement proved the prescience of that statement and clearly shows how the major parties have sacrificed conviction for political expediency.

This was reinforced by the government introducing the RDA amendments in the senate, where they are sure to fail thanks to Nick Xenophon, the Greens and Labor. This decision raises concerns about the ability of the government to even get the reforms through the House of Representatives where it has a majority.

We all know that things are finely balanced in the lower house, but it speaks volumes about the current political malaise that an issue as fundamental to a functioning democracy like freedom of speech might not have the numbers even within the governing centre-right party.

There are some who lament the amount of time conservatives spend discussing matters like freedom of speech. Critics say it’s not raised often around the BBQ or the shearing sheds. That might be true but leadership isn’t always about responding to concerns, it requires the ability to identify problems before they become universally apparent.

Unfortunately true leadership doesn’t gel well with modern politics. Politicians get no electoral credit for preventing a crisis, only for responding to one.

It’s much more difficult to seek re-election by saying ‘vote for me because xyz didn’t happen’ rather than ‘vote for me because I fixed xyz for you’. Not that the fixes always work!

That’s a problem for all of us. The political class actually benefits from everyone else running into political brick walls constructed for the very purpose of being knocked down later on.

Principled and fearless leadership identifies potential problems early, makes others aware of the pitfalls ahead and makes the case for the need to change course.

Some of these future obstacles are crystal clear while some are less apparent. Perhaps the most pressing of them is the escalating national debt.

Without a swift expansion of Australian Conservatives numbers in the senate, I suspect we’ll see the debt level reach $1 trillion before we see a budget surplus delivered by either of the major parties. The reason for that is simple: neither major party has the courage necessary to cut spending and ensure government lives within its means.

A responsible and principled senate cross bench with a strong Australian Conservative representation can help them find that courage.

We cannot afford more fairy-tale economics from the Greens and Labor whilst the Libs will never be entrusted with a Senate majority to do the right thing.

That makes the agenda to provide a principled and credible alternative in the Senate more important than ever. It’s the only way we can put a stop to the long term detrimental impact of a spiralling debt load on our nation.

It is about averting a crisis for which few will provide any thanks but it is a moral obligation we owe to future generations.

Until next week.

I assume this is the precursor to his retirement announcement.
Has he reached eligibility for a lifetime pension yet? That is customarily the first-order precursor.

The old testament is where the anti gay stuff is. It calls for their death.

Leviticus Chapters 18 and 20 contain the most obviously anti-gay verses and even they have been hotly debated down the ages (to whom do they apply; do the chapters refer to a social taboo or a Biblical sin etc.).

Tellingly, the Old Testament is IMO otherwise fairly ambiguous about homosexuality.

I've pretty much based my life around 20:13.

Mind you, it can provide hours of harmless amusement, listening to or watching Christians and/or Jews try to extract some coherent and acceptable (that's the fun bit) moral or ethical principle from the whole Leviticus Tale of Two Cities.
It gives a whole new meaning to the concept of religious sophistry.

Its even more amusing when they ignore text that puts them in a bad light . But Muslims

New International Version
For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head.

New Living Translation
Yes, if she refuses to wear a head covering, she should cut off all her hair! But since it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut or her head shaved, she should wear a covering.

English Standard Version
For if a wife will not cover her head, then she should cut her hair short. But since it is disgraceful for a wife to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her cover her head.

Only if you think the bible doesnt mean what it says.

People can and do spin its 'meaning' so that it fits within their personal beliefs. People have even ascribed a 'context' to ots passsages which completley inverts what is written. The bible can mean whatever you want it to; which is why christianity and its denominations are so diverse in their ideology and actions.

Im just judging it by what it actually says, like I would any other text.

Your Weekly Dose of Common Sense

Dear Kwikfix,

The “Statement of National Challenges” report was released this week by the Menzies Research Centre. It is very sober reading for anyone concerned about the future of our economy and our quality of life.

The subtitle of the report is ‘why Australians are struggling to get ahead’ and I think that is a sentiment shared by many of us.

The report’s author, former head of the National Commission of Audit, Tony Shepherd AO states:

“For generations the great promise celebrated in our national anthem - wealth in exchange for toil - has given us an enviable lifestyle. Yet Australians are beginning to doubt that promise…they have become distrustful of government and nervous about the future."

It’s a message that regular readers of this column have heard repeatedly over the years. The question remains, why aren’t the political class doing much to fix it?

At some levels, I don’t think many in politics are equipped to see the long term implications of their decisions. They justify our escalating national debt as less bad than others and therefore ok. They legitimise our high taxes by comparing them to socialist countries. They excuse the rorting of our generous welfare system as a human right rather than a hand-up.

It’s as if living beyond one’s means is a moral obligation for government.

The Shepherd report also contains some telling statistics under the heading ‘a strong economy is the basis of a just and fair society’; highlighting our borrowing for recurrent spending and our ageing population.

We currently spend in excess of $155 billion annually on welfare and $72 billion on health. That’s over half the budget on these two measures alone and both are growing well in excess of inflation.

Alarmingly, our tax base is concentrated in an ever-diminishing group of lifters. Nearly 60 per cent of corporate tax is paid by just 0.1 per cent of companies whilst nearly half of all personal tax is paid by nine per cent of earners.

Clearly this is not sustainable and makes a mockery of the cacophony of chanting ‘make the wealthy pay their fair share’ mantra. These lifters are doing that - and more.

I realise such statistics may not sit well with those who see others doing better but we have to confront the reality of the problem facing our nation.

Too many are expecting too much from government. Unfortunately too many in government seek to placate those demands for political expediency.

The real price of that opportunism will be borne by the next generation.

You can download a copy of the report here.

Until next week.

Spam ??? How could you say that !!! Everyone needs a bit of common sense occasionally.

If posted a pizza hut add every so often without adding something, or a liberal or labour party ad without any content of my own. How is it different form what you are doing. People are aware that bernardi has a web site. They want to read his stuff they are quite capable of going there and reading the stuff.

If you aren't going to add anything, like why Bernadi is particularly right about issue X because of Y or that bernadi is doing clever political taking this angle (por converse he's wrong because of Z or taking a poor political approach)

Your not adding anything at all, just spamming everyone here. How is what your different form pushing junk mail in people's letter boxes?

many Boards I'm a member of have a rule against this sort of posting. (many also have rules against 1 line posts)

He thinks people/companies are doing more than their fair share when only 0.1% are paying company tax , and its the welfare bludgers fault??? GAGF

He knows SFA about wealth inequality and how we got to this point. He thinks every rich person is a hardworking genius and every poor person is a slacker. Most people would be more than happy to make more income and contribute more tax, but kents like him ensure it won't happen. He's a colossal doughnut.

LOL, people all around the world work hard for hardly anything. For example, third-world countries like Bangladesh and Benin are teeming with hard-working entrepreneurs who have to be entrepreneurial just to survive - and yet they're still poor!

Contrary to the neoliberal narrative then, a strong work ethic does not necessarily make one wealthy.

While I rarely give Andrew Bolt credit, he did a good job of absolutely destroying the Bernardi party's new candidate last night on Sky.

If anyone hasnt watched make sure you do. She embarrassed herself and had absolutely no idea. Made a whole lot of unsubstantiated claims which, when called upon to give evidence of, she ofcourse couldnt and backtracked immediately.

If this is the standard of candidate Bernardi is going to put forward then he will struggle to get anyone other than far right wing koolaid drinkers to vote for him.

This absolutely disgusting excuse for a human being is reported today to have been admonishing Chaplaincy Services SA for not calling the spiritual/spaces, (prayer spaces) at the new Royal Adelaide Hospital "Chapels". The Executive Officer of Chaplaincy Services SA says that they have been working with many different faiths to build relationships and give people of many different faiths a place for contemplation and prayer at the hospital.

Bernardi reckons that Chaplains SA have "sold out" and, "The reason Western values are being weakened is because we're reliant on people like this to defend them." in reference to Chaplaincy Services SA's Executive Officer.

Why doesn't this racist and bigoted bastard just come straight out and say that Australian Tax Payer dollars should not be handed over to hospitals that allow non-Christians to be accepted as patients? He'd be right at home in Greece leading the Golden Dawn Fascists who would go and if the chance arises, still go into hospitals and drag out non-Christians and non-Greeks and throw them out into the streets.

This is a pig, just like that Hanson dog, who was welcomed with open arms into the "liberal" party in fact, Bernardi had top spot on the "liberals" SA senate ticket until the last election where he filled the number 2 spot and the "liberals" still get pissed off when decent people call them racists and bigots?

Speaking of far right koolaid drinkers.

Hilariously dumb article from Pickering (and that is saying alot considering the rest of the dribble he writes).

He says Bolt uses an "old left wing trick" giving the researcher no time to "recover research that leads to a definitive answer".......what research? She all but admitted she had no tangible evidence and had done no research that Mosques are stashing weapons and said she only had "anecdotal evidence"........in other words she had nothing. Just fearmongering to further her political agenda. And good on Andrew Bolt for revealing her as the idiot she is.

Thank christ we have one politician to call out this appeasement to a minority death cult.

Australian Conservatives Senator Cory Bernardi has slammed the $2.3 billion project for having two spiritual spaces; one with two separate washrooms for Muslims to perform ablutions, and another generic prayer space.

Senator Bernardi said that was “bending over to appease a minority for fear of causing offence while undermining our tradition and heritage”, and that there should be a specifically Christian prayer room.

Senator Bernardi said Mr Bossie was a “sellout”.

“The reason Western values are being weakened is because we’re reliant on people like this to defend them,” he said.

“He wants an inclusive space and yet endorses an area that is specifically designed and catered to a militant minority. Talk about a sellout. “
