i think so far..this is my fav costello album i have heard:thumbsu:

its a real gem. such a great feel on this album, attractions realy start to experiment with what they have without not sounding like themselves. if that makes sense..

not a weak song. its got groove, drama and 100% charm

celebrate this album
i have discovered this 25 years on from when it was made and it doesnt sound dated at all

Imperial Bedroom, considered by many to be one of Costello's finest recordings. It is definately in my top 3 EC albums. His first 2 albums being neck and neck for me with this one

In my top 5 EC albums;

1) This Year's Model (by some stretch)
2) Get Happy!
3) Imperial Bedroom
4) Painted From Memory
5) King of America

But still about 100 times better than 95% of other bands' best work. 'Beyond Belief' and 'Shabby Doll' are absolute killer tracks, as is 'Tears Before Bedtime' - and they're just the first three songs!!

you have get happy at number 2!

i dont think its realy that special. the songs are damn catchy but they dont do to much,to short + to many of them

im getting into painted memory right now so i'll tell you what i think of that.

imperial, this years model, delivery man are my favs

Get Happy! holds a special place in my heart. It's the album I've put on 1000 times after getting home completely smashed and it's just topped the night off. So great just to rock out to.

Painted From Memory is an outstanding album. EC's best singing is right there, and so are some of his best songs. 'This House is Empty Now', 'God Give Me Strength', 'The Sweetest Punch' - just wow...

I only picked up IB last week, so it's too early for me to rate it just yet. Based on what I've read about it I've got no doubt that I'm going to love it. Over the last couple of years EC has become one of my most highly rated music artists, based primarily on his first 3 albums but I'm now building up my collection of his work. I picked up Blood & Chocolate about 6 months ago and I rate this record so highly. It's worth having just for I Want You, but it's full of cracking straight ahead pop/rock gems like Crimes Of Paris, I Hope You're Happy Now, Uncomplicated and Next Time Round. EC sounds especially caustic on this album. I bought IB and Trust last week and I've got Get Happy! and Almost Blue on their way. Happy times!

Good stuff Truck Rutten!

as you listen to more and more of the guy you realise how bloody good he is.
digging Painted From Memory, very mellow jazz but like UpForGrabs said his voice is in fine form.

how come brutal youth is not that regarded?
iv been on that album the past few days. its gotta have the best start to a costello album. pony street, kinder murder + 13 steps lead down. this has some of his best songs imo. final hour! 20% amnesia. these songs on BY are so well put together. the ol band reformed and right on top of their game.

i think this should just be a costello thread now :p

There's some fine bootlegs from around this time. The favourite one of mine is Costello and Steve Nieve (on keyboards) taken from their show at Massey Hall in Toronto in 1999.

A perfect soundboard recording - the setlist ranges from covers to really old stuff, to stuff from Painted From Memory and unreleased stuff. If it were released as a live album it would (IMHO) be considered one of the very best.

The highlight is the final song of night - Costello walking through the crowd without a microphone singing 'Couldn't Call it Unexpected #4' (from Mighty Like a Rose).

For the big Costello fans try tracking down the rare track with Paul McCartney called "Tommys Coming Home" that is some fine harmonising by the two, brings tears to my eyes, sounds brilliant. And its a nice song too bad never released

Okay I've now had time to absorb and get to know IB and it's 'kin brilliant. My favourite tracks at this stage would be Tears Before Bedtime, Man Out Of Time, Human Hands and Kid About It. The man is an absolute genius. That's all :)

Which makes it more of a shame to hear that EC has apparently quit the recording studio - the cost vs rewards are, according to him, not worth it.

He's also vowed not to play in England again - which I don't mind as long as he keeps touring here!

I hadn't heard that. As long as he continues touring and more specifically comes out here again soon. I think there's enough quality material in his back catalogue to sustain him for just a little while :) I've never actually seen him live. Can't believe that I didn't go and see him the last time he was in Melb, which was after I'd moved here so I had the opportunity. I hadn't truly discovered him by then though :(

I just found out yesterday that Fender are going to be releasing an EC signature series Jazzmaster: http://www.fender.com/news/index.php?display_article=218

Damn I'm going to want one of them when they come out.
