Roast Cotchin- not the Superstar some think

Brave thread OP but something I've wondered myself at times. I don't think he is necessarily overrated but just that he hasn't been able to recapture the 2012 form when he became arguably a top 3 player in the comp.

I think looking back on it, giving Cotch the captaincy was probably asking a bit too much of a young player (though in his defence, he led us to finals in his first year at the helm and played most of the season with a bit of niggle in his knee). He has had to battle hard this season with Lids, Jacko and Martin all being absent at times in the middle and supporting players like Ellis and Conca being up and down with their own form (not to mention the retirement of Tuck).

I think his disposal has gone down a bit over the last few seasons and he does get a lot of 1-2 cheapies (perhaps though his role is a playmaker and the team would rather have the ball in his hands?). I think with more time and maturity, he will also hopefully start stepping up more in crunch moments when we need him to. The captain's goal against the Cats on the weekend was a great example of this. It's easy to forget he is so young still! When Maric comes back, we will have more 'leaders' across the park to help share the load (Rance, Maric, Lids, Jackson and Riewoldt).

If we're going to have a go at someone, it should be Dustin Martin. Ultimate downhill skier.

For a player in his fifth year and who has a number of the attributes required to be a very good footballer, his output is often very disappointing

Once again see if you can follow, Cotchin currently gets all the attention from the opposition in regards to being tagged. With Deledio in the side, Cotchin may not get the heavy tag that he currently is, that means he might find himself in a little more space which gives him more time and space to deliver the ball, therefore his disposal efficiency picks up.

Just playing the devil's advocate here:

Does Deledio's disposal efficiency drop to the same extent as Cotch's when he gets tagged?

If not why not?

i personally think deledio is our best player. cotchin has become too inside for my liking, and it limits his abilities to make him into basically what tuck was.

Two very different players in that Cotchin is a ball winner and Deledio is a ball distributor. Deledio in a team with a better midfield would be AA year in, year out. Fantastic player with fantastic skills. Cotchin however is more important to us at the moment. Deledio is more dependant upon others getting him the ball than Cotchin is.

I do agree with you however that Cotchin is doing too much of the grunt work at the moment. The coaching staff need to get another hard bodied inside player in there that can make life a little easier for Cotchin and free him up just a little. It's a matter of degrees here. If Cotchin is to continue with his pure inside role, he needs to put on a few more kilos. Think of Daniel Kerr, Lenny Hayes, Joel Selwood types...always at the bottom of packs. As fantastic as those players are, I just think that is a waste for someone with his evasive skills and pace.

Have any of you blokles heard the Michael Voss grab from SEN from the weekend? When interviewing Michael Murphy and Voss started talking about what he would do as captain with some of his non-performing team-mates. Well that's what Cotchin needs to do with some of our skirts in the team. I don't like the way certain players in our team love to run but not get their hands dirty when it's their turn. They're too outside for my liking and Cotchin as captain needs to do what Voss suggested Murphy does with some of his non-performing teammates.

Cotchin is one of the best things to happen to us as a club and will get even better as he firstly continues to grow in the captains role (don't forget he is still very young) and secondly as the coaching staff provide him with more inside support.

I want to open a can of worms here and stimulate some discussion and debate.

I have been watching some of our 2012 wins on afl.com.au and seeing them has made me realise something. Since then cotchin has under performed greatly. Since then I cannot think of a game were his class and skill have dominated a game. Since then his disposal and decision making have gone backwards. Since then (in my opinion) he has slipped from superstar to the mid to bottom end of elite. I used to look at him as standing head and shoulders above deledio however that has all changed now. Now they are on par as their negatives out weigh their positives.

I think that his current attitude should be reassessed for captain. I personally think he is not that great because we currently lack on field leadership. Also his comments last year or the year before that (cant really remember) when he said that he would seriously consider retiring from football if Richmond won the flag should seriously be looked at. If I was the coach I would have stripped his captaincy right there. We seemed to have more on field leadership with Newman as captain at the moment.

I am going to be perfectly honest here. In the last few matches I have groaned whenever Cotchin goes to kick the ball, much the same as I groaned when tambling some how found it. Whether it is increased attention or the captain duties I have no idea but he has taken a major step backwards. I only hope for the clubs sake it is to make a running start forward.

heretic burn him at the stake.

He is one of the few, unfortunately, who can get his hands on the ball when the game is there to be won

Agreed - definitely need a few more to stand up when the game is there to be won and lost. Cotchin can't/shouldn't be expected to perform herculean efforts to get us over the line in clutch games.
