Not personally but I know people that have.

If you slow jog getting to 5kms isn't disgustingly hard but if you want to be able to do it regularly without hurting yourself a program like couch to 5km isn't a bad way to go.

It's worked for a lot of people
 
couch to 5km is a great program and I recommend it to clients who want to get into middle distance running. The initial stages are very basic and if you have some baseline fitness you may want to start slightly into the program
