Coughlan

With all due respect but I believe a lot of supporters have forgotten how good Coughlan is. After winning our B+F (and yes he was better than Foley, stupid question) he had OP for ages and struggled for form similar to Luke Ball is now. Then the 2 knees.

Seeing him underperform while playing injured before a long stint on the sidelines has tainted your memories.

Actually I can show you a thread where at the end of Chris Judd's 2nd year (right before winning a Brownlow) that the general football fans were ranking a young Mark Coughlan in the same league, even higher. Naturally Judd went on to improve even more but it must not be forgotten that he was once rated as an elite midfielder and one of the absolute peak young prospects in the AFL, let alone at Richmond.

Short memories some of us have, I'm disappointed in the lack of respect Mark Coughlan gets as he was a Brownlow worthy player ibefore he got injured. I hope he can overcome the odds and come back in good shape, but to be elite once again would be a little out of the ordinary.

Well said BF :thumbsu:

Thankyou Benny Furs, what I've been conveying to these somewhat nuff nuffs all along. Finally some sense has prevailed.

another positive about coughlan is his age. he's in an age bracket that we're desperately short on. i think when he comes back and finds his feet, he's going to be an invaluable contributor.

Sure young Coughlan was a promising player, it's no secret he won the JDM among a very ordinary playing group that year. However it's a long time ago Benny and sadly he'll never become the player we hoped after showing that early ability.
Injury has severely hampered his ability to kick with accuracy and penetration. Between him Tuck & Johnson they should be named the 'Turnover Triplets'. Our midfield would still be one of the worst in the comp even with a fit-ish Cogs.
To mention him in the same breath as Judd these days is simply ludicrous and exactly why he's over-rated by Richmond supporters these days.

Rest assured Coughlan if he gets back playing wont be anywhere near the player he was for at least 12-18 months. You just don't come back from 2 serious knee injuries and pick up where you left off, he has to adjust to the changes in the game that have come about since his been off. Look at Darcy at times during the year has looked very good (especially against us) then at other times has looked like a first year rookie instead of a 10 year veteran.

Those of you with fond memories of a firing Cogs had better be prepared for him to struggle and take any good performances with a grain of salt. 2009 is the earliest you will see Cogs getting anywhere near his best.

Mark Coughlan will have a full pre-seaon. As he did he knee before the season even started his candidly said that if Richmond are there come September he is a chance to play.

He will still be an important player next year and along with Tuck, Foley and Neville(hopfully) we should absolutly dominate the clearences. It is just important that blokes like Tambling and Deledio are running into the square at centre bounces to come and be given the ball as they will use it better

There is a difference though between being match fit and fit. Darcy was in the same boat, did his second knee before the start of last season and had a full 12 months to get fit but still struggles to get back to where he was before the knee injuries. IMO better to aim low when Cogs returns in terms of expectation. Anything else is setting yourself up to be disappointed.

If coughlan is over-rated then what is Foley? As much as I love him and as outstanding as he has been this year, he is a good young midfielder in a shite midfield that is smashed every week.

Foley has never been tagged and so is yet to prove he is the god that many posters worship.

Coughlan may not have the best foot skills but he was easily Richmond's best ball winner. Howmany tigers use the ball better than him anyway?
foley has been tagged every week since the essendon game

That's fair enough but the point is he was once an elite midfielder of the competition. He may not be this ever again (unlikely to be elite imo, but should be good) but he isn't overrated.

If people expect him to be a superstar in the future then yes, he is overrated by them.

If people look at his career from start to now then you could argue he has been underrated and if not, then playing while injured has soured some memories.

He used to be a complete superstar, and this is validated by a majority of opposition supporters not just from biased Richmond fans like myself.

He was never a complete superstar.
That is reserved for the elite players in the competition.
Cogs was very good early but he was never elite.
Over-rating him Benny.

Foley gets tagged every week yet still racks up the possessions, I don't think so. He doesn't get close to the attention that would be termed 'tagging'.

Kane Johnson on S. Burger or Baker/Crouch on anyone is a 'tag'.

The fact that Axel has an opponent while other tigers are not afforded that basic aspect of football because they are rubbish does not mean Foley is tagged.

Not my words.

The media, the players and opposition football supporters described him this way before he had OP. ;)

no they didnt

he won a b&f in a crap side and he was the shining light in a sub-standard midfield kind of like what foley is atm

never was elite

Cogs was one of the best young midfielders in the comp before OP set in. The year he won the JDM he was going head to head against the oppositions number 1 midfielder and giving them a bath. Gaveone of the Johnsons from essendon a bath, gave mcleod some, Francou too - he was great bc he wasnt tagging these guys, simply standing them and just beating them at their own game.

He was the best clearance player in the AFL, Mitchell took over the following year.

He was at least the equal of Luke Ball, same players, both dont have the best disposal, both have more courage than they should and both have an inate ability to emerge with the ball. Cogs went head to head a few times with Ball when he(cogs) had OP and was beating him at his own game. Was a super player.

Dont sell him short, he was on his way to being elite, sadly that was a long time ago and will never happen. At best he'll be a serviceable player and I doubt he'll even be that sadly :( Its not just the 2 knees, but the footy he missed before that with OP....handful of games in 4 years, you cant get the pace of the game after missing so much

His contract is up at end of the year and they haven't re-signed him yet.....What do we read into this?

A. They want to see how he recovers first
B. May use him as trade bait
C. Waiting to see who will stay/go before they make an offer
D. He has asked for too much??

About his contract he has said he wants to be at Richmond next year and like Brown the contract is just a formality. I guess they both want to see how his knee will turn out before talking figures, but his trade value is too little to consider so nothing to worry about there.

And Magic I don't need a source for something that was pretty common knowledge. I've read and heard it many times. You're selling him short.

My prefered situation,

E. they are getting other contracts out of the way first as they know he isn't going anywhere.

Realistically Richmond are very unlikely to see anything better than a hack like schammer/a 3rd or 4th round draft pick or at very best (if fremantle continue to be as stupid as they have been in the past) Ryan Murphy which even still would not be worth it IMO.

I really hope the tigers don't trade him as what they'd get would be virtually nothing. Hopefully they keep him with a view to him somehow dominating all comers as he had done pre injury.
