WTF? Youngish Top-shelf talent gamebreakers become available and you would not consider giving away a speculative youngster/pick? While I doubt any of those players will sign elsewhere, a Ablett Jnr or Bartell would be an absolute godsent.

l have a feeling the same comments were being made about Judd, we need to develop a team, l would have hardly call a top five draft pick speculative, there is something very wrong with your player selection if a top five pick cannot be 150 game + player, l think the important think for Carlton is improving its player selection and development.

l would suggest Ablett/Bartell will be one and two priority to remain at Geelong it is probably going to come down to Geelong second tier players possibly being available.

Must agree...crap thread.

FWIW I could not see any value whatsoever in trying to bring Scarlett to Carlton (as if he would come when they are smack bang in the middle of a 2-3 premiership window).

He'll be 30 next year and event he most ardent would have to agree his best is probably behind him. O'Reilly or Mansfield ring any bells?

Who are the best young key defenders going around? I have enjoyed watching Josh Gibson play this year, and Josh Drummond goes well, but even these guys are mid twenties now.

Of the younger guys Geelong have quiety unveiled another quality tall defender in Harry Taylor...this guy looks to have a lot going from him. Have seen less of Nathan Brown from the wobbles, but he seems to be getting some fair wraps.

How old is Scarlett? Not sure how if he has enough years left at his peak to be of use comparable to what we'd have to give up to get him.

And anyway, isn't Jonathon Brown out of contract this year? I'd be moving heaven and earth to get his signature, and not thinking about anything else until he re-signs with the Lions...

Fev is doing a fine job thanks, we need a backline more than we need another goalkicker.

Josh Kennedy showed stuff-all at Carlton and was a late withdrawal on the weekend so he's still yet to produce anything to suggest his No 4 rating was justified. The jury is still well out on our player selection capabilities. Plenty of people think WH should be gelded although I understand Gilly Hughes isn't one of them.

It is always easy after the event however l would suggest not taking Patrick Ryder in that draft was a significant mistake.

I'd like to ask this question to everyone on the Carlton Board: if we were, say, 4-14 (W-L) at Round 18, would you be willing to tank the last 4 games knowing you would DEFINATELY get John Brown AND matty Scarlett??

not saying we will, just a theoretical...

And at what point would anyone be able know this would DEFINITELY be the case???? No shit it's just a theoretical...

Players will not leave Geelong when there is realisitic opportunity to play in grand finals over the next few years simply for money. Players will leave Geelong only when there is no realistic opportunity to play in grand finals over the next few years. So forget about their guns, only their older and/or fringe players would consider leaving.

Slightly off topic, but would you consider trading Fev for Nathan Brown (of the Pie variety) -we could build our defence around Brown and move Waite back into the forward line to be our game breaking forward?

Some will, its pretty much inevitable. Probably not the core group - I'd say Ablett, Bartell, Ling, Scarlett, Harley, Hawkins, Ottens, Johnson are secure. But of the rest, at least one or two will a) slip in form and confidence and find themselves out of the senior side, and b) have to take considerably less money to remain at Geelong.

In that case, you'll probably see the Cats 'suggest' the player look elsewhere, as happened last year with King etc. Kelly seems the prime candidate, but it would only take a slip in form for a few of the others to end up leaving.

Look at what happened to Essendon in 2001; after 3 dominant years at the top, they ended up losing Hardwick, Blumfield, Caracella, Heffernan, Moorcroft, and eventually a couple of others too.
all the essendon players you listed did well at the dons but very little once they left, would the same happen to the cats players mentioned if they left and tried there luck elsewere, personaly i am happy with the way our list is developing, our younger players will cost us a hell of a lot more to keep them in 3 years time, lets not revisit the past with buying our way out of trouble, i like the way we are doing it now.
A win please just one to start with please:D:D

Could Carlton do the impossibly and... possibly recruit and develop our own players to potentially become guns. Forget trading or tanking for other gun players we need to start developing what we have now. If we get (which we wont) lets say Brown/Ablett/Bartell how the hell are we going to afford the young group of players we have learning together like Geelong did 5/6 years ago. Judd, Gibbs, Kreuzer, (Murphy, Fev both out of contract at the end of the season) all need to fit into the cap.

I say DRAFT AND DEVELOP OUR OWN and F..K this tank talk off.

Gees im pi$$ed off today

could sign the two positions we badly need in one year... CHF and FB...

No.

Because they will enter our team, and we will still be losing because we have further embraced a loser's mentality. Scartlett would probably own his opponent, make a dash out of defence into the middle and kick it to Carrazzo. He would then try to kick it to a leading Brown, but the kick is so bad that it results in a turn over. The opposition player runs down the field and kicks a long one to Scarlett's opponent before he can even reach him. I could just see it happening. ;)

If we do take those players, what of our salary cap? We will probably do doubt lose some of our younger players because we can't fit them in. How old is Scarlett and Brown anyway? Sounds like a band aid solution to me - we should be developing our own talent while at the same time maintaining a positive influence by actually trying to win. Getting them aren't going to magically fix our troubles when our confidence and belief in ourselves is further sapped... two players will not make much of a difference if the rest of the team can't play as a team, or can't do the basic things. Can you just imagine how some of the players would feel when they see their own supporters wanting them to lose? They don't give a shit about draft picks - they just want to play football... and believe it or not, some of them actually want to win. Want to sing the club song, like in the good old days.

That said, your hypothetical is so far stretched that it has lost its elasticity of reason. The point is, we have to change this losing mentality around before we can rely on players from other clubs to get us out of this rut.

Now that interests me more - he's a Vic boy and he's coming out of contract. How could we afford him though?
Ackland frees up about 300K, and some of the boys would need to sit down and look at their pay packets and decide if they are earning what they are getting paid.

The sad thing about the salary cap is that no matter how crap your list is, you have to pay 93%, which generally means some players get overpaid compared to what they might get at another club.

Guys on big bucks that would need to have a look in the mirror and decide if they could take a cut for the sake of the team would be Scotty, Fev, Bentick, Houlihan, JUDD, Stevo...........

It will never happen, but I recall at the end of trade week Swann was saying we still had room for another big name, and the figure $400k was thrown around.
Add acklands $300k to that and we'd be well on the way, but it would take some very generous gestures from senior players, and I think the only way it will happen is actually to move some of them on.

Can't see it happenning.

As for the thread title............the rest of the setence should be:

........play 4 quarters of footy with the senior players playing somewhere near their potential for the duration............

Not in the foreseable future.:(

Ahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahaha

Could Carlton do the impossible and actually win some games for a change. Oh wait, that would mean no draft picks, well can't have it both ways

Oh dear. Really wouldn't be bringing up draft picks if I were a purple pusbag. Anyone have a link to that hilarious litany of disasters that is the Freo recruitment history?
