Just a thought out of left field guys. If Kingy leaves us I reckon it could leave us short of cover in the ruck. We were pretty fortunate last year with Ottens and Blake's fitness but ruckmen have a tough life, one of them will probably miss some games at some point. West will probably not be ready yet so I was thinking about our options.

Moons did a good job filling in as ruckman when we needed him but we really need him up forward. Next on my list was Egan. He's a similar size to Jeff White and he's athletic so perhaps he could do a similar job. We just blasted a record score in the GF without him so we it looks like we can cover for him at the back. And he's obviously a quick learner. coming into the game late and worthy AA after less than 60 games.

Waddya reckon?

Yes, lets play the AA CHB in the ruck when we have the best ruck in the comp rucking for 70% of the time and 3 others who could be selected to fill the void for him for the remaining 30....

Er, no, he's a bloody good backman, keep him there, Geelong are a better side with him taking the opposition's best forward, frees up Mackie and Milburn to attack more.

If you read what I said I'm talking about if Kingy leaves and one of Otto or Blake gets injured. Who are the three others you are talking about?

No. Maybe as a pinch hitter but not as a ruckman 5 mintues a quarter. It leaves a massive gap in the backline and we will get killed in the ruck when he is up against an experienced 200cm monster. Interesting theory, but next year I think Trent West will come along enough to be able to have him as a strong 2nd/3rd ruckman type.

He doesn't take the opposition's best forward most weeks. Scarett does. Go back and look at Scarlo's direct opponents in 2007. It makes me cringe when people say Egan plays on the best forward every week.

Here is a list of who I think is each team's most DANGEROUS, GOAL- KICKING forward and which Cats backman played on them in 2007. If you disagree let me know:

Adelaide- Scott Welsh (M. Scarlett)
Brisbane- Jonathan Brown (M. Egan)
Carlton- Brendan Fevola (M. Scarlett)
Collingwood- Anthony Rocca (M. Scarlett)
Essendon- Scott Lucas (M. Scarlett)
Fremantle- Matthew Pavlich (M. Egan)
Hawthorn- Lance Franklin (A. Mackie)
Kangaroos- Corey Jones (T. Harley)
Melbourne- David Nietz (did not play; M. Scarlett would have)
Port Adelaide- Brett Ebert (M. Scarlett/ J. Hunt)
Richmond- Matthew Richardson (M. Egan)
St. Kilda- Fraser Gerhig (M. Scarlett)
Sydney- Barry Hall (did not play; M. Scarlett would have)
West Coast- Quinten Lynch (M. Scarlett)
Western Bulldogs- Brad Johnson (M. Scarlett/ T. Harley)

Looks pretty in favour of Scarlett to me. What needs to be clarified is that Scarlett plays FB, thus he mans the FF. Egan plays CHB and mans the CHF.

If the best forward is the FF, he's Scarlo's and visa versa.

Scarlett plays on the least accountable tall forward the opposition has, and tries to run off him and create drive off half back. Whether that means he takes the best forward or not depends on who you rate as the best forward each time Geelong plays.

Anyway, I would like to see Egan play one day as a CHF. He has a great kick, is a good contested mark, and reads the play well, as well as his work rate which is extremely high for a bloke his size. However, I couldn't see that happening until we had another tall defender, and that probably won't be for a while, and in that time Scarlo and Harls will probably have finished their careers, so I can't see it happening.

As for playing him as a mobile ruck, I don't really like it, unless he was playing a defensive, almost tagging role on someone like Cox if he was having a major influence on the game, but I think CHB is where he is best suited with the team that we have and the style we play.

Cloke is Collingwood's best forward, Riewoldt is St Kilda's, and I'm fairly sure that Lucas was taken by Egan, though not dead certain. So that would make three more to Egan on your list.

You are a very curious individual. For a 'Collingwood' supporter you post soooo much on Matthew Scarlett. How is it exactly that you know who Scarletts direct opponents are for EVERY game this year, and why have you watched every Geelong game? I've noticed in the past you always seem to be able to pop up with Scarlett in many another thread..

Is that you Scarlo?..

Clarification:
I am a huge fan of players, and an even greater fan of defenders. I barrack for the Collingwood Football "Club", but believe me I am more critical of some of the individual players than most.

Growing up I played about 7 years at full- back for my local footy club through juniors, and as a kid, loving football, you always like to model yourself on certain players. With Matthew Scarlett being the best full- back in the comp then (and now), he was my player of choice.

I guess I've just followed through with it ever since.

I make sure I watch Geelong and Collingwood every sinlge week. I hope Collingwood wins, and I hope Scarlo plays well (not Geelong).

Egan started on Lucas, but Scarlett spent the final 3 quarters on him, because he was playing closer to goal with Lloyd out.

Well we define the term 'best' forward differently:
I think the best forward is the opposing teams most legitimate and dangerous scoring threat.
NOT
The opposing teams most profiled forward.

There is no doubt Riewoldt is a great CHF, but I'd have thought it more important to shut down the opposition's best goal kicker, which in St. Kilda and Collingwood's cases is Gerhig and Rocca, who might not necessarily be the better players, but are more lethal to your team.

:thumbsu: Cool. I have noticed that you do actually seem to know what you are talking about, and don't have Pie Goggles on like most of your counterparts.

Still waiting for a rebuttal to my comment, for those who think I'm wrong!!!

Sorry to say but that doesn't hurt me too much at all. To see what Geelong did in the grand final, I was extremely happy with Collingwood's effort that night, especially considering I never thought we'd beat Sydney.

I respect the fact Geelong are a great side, and was pleased to see them win the flag, massacaring the Power.

If you are going to intrude with such immaturity amidst a proper and mannered discussion I suggest you sign up at sportal.com or something!

Never did I intend to cast doubt over Matthew Egan, he is a great young player, what I merely said, and later proved was that he doesn't play on the opposition's most dangerous goal scorer MOST weeks.

Oh, and for the record my parents aren't cousins... but that was a good one Tommahawk, laughs all round.

Wojcinski has a good leap on him... plus he could run off other ruckman and get plenty of disposals...

Mrs Egan, please read what I said again.

Why would I make this thread? Cos there's no footy and I'm bored.
